That is a great picture.  Part of my job is to examine failed parts in a variety of manners including a scanning electron microscope.  With one of those, things get interesting.

You should see the hires version, it's about 10 times larger, very detailed.  We have the ability to go 200x magnification but I didn't need to spend too much time looking at something that I know CB has fixed.

I checked on my upgrade and CB will upgrade my two sets of Eggbeater SL pedals (one of them is the broken pedal), which I understand are more than 4 years old, for around half price (~$60 I guess).  The other set I have, which is the newest set and are less than two years old, is an original Eggbeater 3 and CB will upgrade that one for free to the newest spindle design, new bearings, new spirng, new gaskets.  I just need to pay shipping to get my pedals to them.

I will go update my first post to more accurately reflect what vintage of pedal failed.
