1st Build Need Help
« on: February 24, 2021, 04:56:17 PM »
Hey guys !

Been reading the forum for a little while and im now ready for my first build.
I have a few question i would appreciate help with.

Here is the planned build:
Frame: Tantan X-21 , considering Velo Build VBR-R-168 which appear to be the exact same bike or the Workswell R268 Disc to a lesser extent.
Shifters: Shimano 105 R7000
Front Derailleur: Shimano 105 R7000
Rear derailleur: Shimano 105 R7000 GS
Crankset: Zrace HardRock Road Crankset 170mm 52-36T
Casette: Shimano 105 R7000 11-34T
Chain: Shimano CN-HG601 11 Speed Chain
Brake: TRP Spyre SLC, now considering the Zrace as well.
Bottom Braket: Im confused on this one, what ever fit BB86 lol, maybe someone can make some light on this for me haha.
Wheels: Elite wheels SLR 3.0 Disc (Already have SLR 3.0 Rim on my current bike and love them)

Im open to suggestion regarding every piece of equipement.

Detail:
X21 is 600$ US, and VBR-168 479$, they both appear to be the same frame ?
Tantan do sell the R7000 groupset at a good price.
Im not sure which size i should get since according to there size chart i would need something in between 49 and 52.
95% of my use will be on the road, but i choose this specific frame because it can accomodate 32c tyre, and im planning to get a 2nd pair of wheel and put 32 tyre on there so i can use this bike for some light gravel as well.

I planned on building a bike for a while now so my Wife got me those tools for Christmas:
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ca/en/lifeline-essential-torque-wrench-set/rp-prod155414
And
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ca/en/lifeline-bike-tool-kit-37-piece/rp-prod55963

Do you think ill be fine with that, or is there anything else i need to get in order to complete the build ?

Also i was looking at a Workstation to make the whole process easier, but im reading online that we shouldnt use those with carbon frame ?
Im reffering to something like this:
https://www.amazon.ca/-/fr/Bikehand-Support-r%C3%A9paration-pour-v%C3%A9lo/dp/B07R452R8K/ref=sr_1_10?__mk_fr_CA=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=road+bike+workstation&qid=1614207228&sr=8-10

I dont know much about mechanic but its my motivation to do this build, i hope to learn alot in the process.

All Help is welcome, sorry if my english is perfect, its not my first language.
Thanks !

Hello Masta.

For the bottom bracket explanation: Parktool has a good post here: https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/bottom-bracket-standards-and-terminology. Basically, BB86 refers to the width of the shell in mm. The BB has to match the BB shell on the bike and the inside diameter of the BB has to accommodate the spindle on the crankset. More experienced builders will no doubt have a lot more to add.   :D

The TRP spyres have a dual-piston system and the ZRACE BR002's have only one moving piston, as far as I know. I haven't tried either so can't tell you if the performance is that much better on the dual piston.

If you opt for a frame with a press-fit bottom bracket you will need a press-fit tool. You can use the work stand just don't clamp the carbon, rather clamp on the aluminium seatpost.

Enjoy the build!

Hi Masta,

Your wife is a keeper! For Christmas, my wife gave me permission to build my own bike. That was a win for me.

You'll be fine! My Tantan X21 was my first build as well. Before that, I changed some inner tubes and figured out how to clean the chain on my old bike. I don't see a cable routing kit on your list. That would be highly recommended if you go with the frames on your list, but I think you have everything you need to get started.

As for your choice of frames, I don't think the Velobuild VBR-R-168 is the same frame as the Tantan X-21. The Velobuild equivalent, I think, is the 099. I don't think that will affect your build process though, they all look basically the same.

For your bottom bracket, I had heard too much about creaking from crappy pressfit bottom brackets, especially if the two sides don't line up exactly right. I opted for this...

Instead of just pressing the two sides into the frame bottom with a pressfit tool, you thread the two sides together with a wrench.

I think Zrace offers a similar style BB86 bottom bracket set-up. Something to think about anyway if you end up with a BB86 pressfit, otherwise, you'd probably have to add a dedicated pressfit tool to your toolbox.

Good luck!

If you're not used to building bikes, I suggest you either go for a BB86 bottom bracket, or — if you get a BSA threaded bottom bracket — take your frame to a bike shop first to get the threads tapped. Threaded BBs may seem easier for home assembly, but home builders often forget that the threads need to be tapped first, to make sure they're clean and straight.

If you want to do everything yourself, a simple BB press is much cheaper to buy than a thread tap.

Hey ! thanks alot everyone for all the help !

@FHS , Yeah, im lucky to have such a great wife :) But i think the real reason is that she want me to work on her bike ^^
I forgot to mention but i will get myself some compressionless housing, and a inner cabling kit, i just dont know which one yet...
You have anything to suggest ?

@Svanimpe, Threaded BB seem like the best option, but last time i brought my bike to the local bikeshop they install a Clincher tyre without tube on my tubeless tyre.
Think im gonna have to work on this on my own lol.

Hey Masta! I'm basically in the exact same spot (and experience level) as you. Leaning towards the VBR-R-168 over the TT-X21 because it's slightly cheaper and it looks a little sleeker (or the photo quality is just better :).

How much is TT quoting for Shimano R7000? I'm having trouble finding all the groupset components for R7020 without losing an arm and a leg.

Cant tell you the price for the full groupset, as im only ordering some part, but there cheaper then everywhere else i could find.

They did told me that even tough they had everything in stock at the moment of the quote, availability might be a problem in the future.
Its a very bad time to be buying shimano part :( its sold out everywhere and everyone who as stock left the price is much higher then just 2 month ago.

Here's the gold standard for cable routing kits.

https://www.parktool.com/product/internal-cable-routing-kit-ir-1-2

It's pricey, but has everything you need.

I tried this one, the flexible magnet is nice, but I couldn't figure out how to use the most useful piece, which is the tip that you can screw into your cable opening to drag the cable through the frame.

the one from park tool is definitely the gold standard. however i found another kit on ebay a little while back and tried it out while swapping handlebars on my bike. it works just as well as the park tool one and its like 1/5 the cost. i found it amazon as well so it may be better to order off of there if its faster shipping for you

Oh, yeah, that looks like it has the same, most useful cable as the Park Tools. Nice. Remember though, Masta hasa wife that buys him tools, so price is no object.
