Paging patliean1- VB-R-168 vs Dengfu R12?
« on: August 12, 2023, 09:30:25 AM »
I think I have narrowed my next build down to these two frames. I'm not a powerhouse but I am heavier (hoping to get down to 80kg). Roads around here aren't too bad; I plan to run either bike on 30c tires and wide wheels (though I'm OK with dropping to 28c if clearance is an issue).

Pat from what I remember you said the Velobuild was a little flexy while the Dengfu was a little stiff. This will also be my first disc build (I would like to go hydraulic). So based on comfort and ease of assembly which way would you go? I am kind of partial to the Dengfu as I like my Dengfu FM208 rim brake build and the general look of the R12.

Hi Takiyaki,

My only feedback here would be you will easily be able to run 30c tyres on the 168. I'm running 28c on wide rims (30mm external / 24mm internal) which measure 31mm once inflated and there is a lot of room both front and rear to spare.

I've put 6,000km's on my 168 and it's been great, zero issues and lovely to ride however I've no experience with the Dengfu so can't give a comparison.

Good luck with your decision!

The Dengfu R12 is sadly no longer in production AFAIK. But email them just to be sure. That would be my vote.

I did not love the VB-168, and still believe the VB-177 is the best road frame VeloBuild makes. Technically it's not aero, but slap some aero wheels on and it will be just as aero  8)

Honestly one of my biggest gripes with the 177 is just the look. I hate the square down tube and the funky wedge front triangle. I will keep it in mind though.

Bummer about the R12, I really like it. What didn't you like about the 168? You seemed relatively positive on it in your review.
