Recommendations for Truing Stands?
« on: December 27, 2023, 09:12:25 AM »
I've recently found that building wheels is kinda fun, but I used a junky stand that I had to jury rig the heck out of to work with my boost hub. What are some good options for AliExpress-type options that are good for building and truing wheels with Boost (or even fat bike...197 asking too much?) hubs? Thanks!

Looking at this post with anticipation. I am going to try my hand at building my own wheels this year.  What did you use to build your DIY truing stand?

I have this one https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001762580481.html

It works pretty good. Not very sturdy so you will have to check the dishing when building af few times by taking the wheel out of the stand because that can be off

I did have to adjust the centring of it for which I bought this tool: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006199680399.html

Same experience here. Had the one mentioned borrowed from a friend and ordered this one for my self: https://a.aliexpress.com/_EJ9LPzr

The latter one was a bit more solid and truly centered. I would go with this.

Me 3. While it does kind of work, it has  definitely issues, quite a few actually. They started from an already questionable design and took out all the oversizing and precision that compensate for the laughable linear bearing arrangement in the original.

That's a bit confusing. Your link shows 2 options:
  • One is the bad Centrimaster copy mentioned above, which has the centre finder feature (which itself requires centring to make it work).
  • The other one doesn't have anything that requires being centred or would even allow you to check. That thing works all the same, no matter if it's straight as an arrow or crooked as hell.
