All road cassette 12s recommendation need
« on: August 17, 2024, 08:29:00 AM »
I am starting to collect parts for a new gravel/road build and looking at the cassette options, I would like something like 10-44 to pair with 46T chainring (Houston is pretty flat, the elevation changes we have are in the punching category more than climbing)but not having a whole lot of luck finding something, any recommendations?

XDR or MS?

10-44 here  https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805090685440.html

and I see a 10-46 here

I haven’t bought the wheel set so I am free to pick whatever. On the MtB I picked up a 11-52 Spedao for $75, that was the price point I had in mind but looks like I will have to push that up. I will have two wheel set, maybe the most economic option will be to have 2 cassettes, one 10-34 for the road and one 11-52 for gravel…

If you haven't bought the wheelset/freehub why bother with XDR? I always find SRAM consumable stuff way too expensive. Just get the Shimano MS style 10-45 cassette. Sure its not 10-44 but...

P.S. you mean 10-34 or 10-44?

That’s close enough for sure and an option, was hoping to find quality Chinese light stuff

The MS style Chiner cassette options are still limited. But now that MS is being used by 12 speed GRX, we might see more varieties soon. Considering how good and long lasting the SLX cassette is, that price is pretty good after coupons. Its just not superlight. My experience with 12 speed Chiner cassettes has been poor. I replaced them with Deore cassettes. Heavy but no issues with indexing.

The XT could also be an option, a little lighter for not much more money, thanks for pointing me in that direction

Absolutely. And still cheaper than SRAM's. I have gotten XT cassette from Newbie bike store.
