Just like steel lugs for traditional brazed construction - except these are bonded together instead of brazed.

Colnago has made (may still make, too lazy to look) frames using carbon tubes bonded to carbon lugs.

Early carbon frames had carbon tubes bonded to aluminum lugs - my first Trek MTB was an aluminum frame done the same way.

Most don't, though, monocoque construction is the norm.

Ah, I understand now.  I was thinking something like a lug nut or bolt of some sort. 

It would seem to me a monocoque design would be far superior from a strength and weight optimization standpoint. Maybe you get less flexability in the geometry department for custom builds?

Company in San Diego makes Carbon reinforced titanium frames.

They machine a ton of metal out of the tubes, then lines them with carbon.  Have never seen one in person, but came across their website while learning about frame building.
