Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: Triathlon Frame help?
« on: February 21, 2024, 07:34:10 PM »
Honestly, if you live in the UK check Facebook marketplace triathlon buy sell groups. There are some really good builds on there for great prices. I'm not sure a open mold will be nearly as good.

Quick update on these. Had a chance to go for a short spin on these.  They're quick!  Definitely can feel the roughly 1 lb less weight than my prior set on getting them up to speed. There were some very small spoke adjustments I made to get the trueness perfect. These, and I'm sure most carbon spoke wheels, require a 5.5mm hex socket wrench from the rim side to adjust spoke nipples. Took me a bit to figure that out.  I like the design, but it does require retaping to adjust spokes.

I'll have to report back after some longer term use but initial rides were positive.

Yes I agree. The threaded shell designs are superior it seems. Simple install and I think less issues with breaking and possible poor fit. BB90 is a trek BB standard that only uses a 37mm shell so not many of these options available. I think Token makes one, but that may be it ...

Anyone got a good recommendation for a pressfit bottom bracket?

Looking at bbinifinite and boka, but they seem wildly expensive.

Anyone try tripeak?

Looking at the bearings they do look to be ceramic. Says right on them.

The hub drive is a 36t ratchet with pawls... not a star ratchet. Reading through my communications, I only asked about a star ratchet specifically for the disc wheel. And that hub is exactly a described.

Given we were going back and forth between the disc rear and carbon spoke rear, I think I just made the assumption out was a star ratchet.

They were quick to respond to my clarifying question about it and apologetic for the confusion. I don't think there is anything misleading intentionally. The only thing that I am missing from my original thoughts is that the rear hub is not a star ratchet. It really isn't a big deal to me. I've never had a 3 pawl hub fail.  This will be on a tri bike and I'm not likely going to be standing and sprinting, so I'm not upset. My HED and Vision wheels use basically the exact same freehub drive.  I have 1000s of miles on them with zero issues.

Yeah they do look to be the same hubs. No issues?

More photos.

Wheels came in today!  First impression is WOW!  Finish and build is fantastic. I really wasn't expecting the logos to be of high quality but they are maybe some of the best I've seen on wheels. They are not busy stick on decals.

Weight for 60/75 came in at 1320 gr.  That's in line with climbing wheels from a decade ago!

Disc is 963gr with valve stem.

Shipping was about 8 days.  Shipped via FedEx to the USA.

Pictures below.

I won't be able to report on ride for a while. It's winter here and roads are a mixed bag.

My only complaint would be that I was expecting the rear hub to be a star ratchet with ceramic bearings.  It's a 3 pawl hub with what look like standard steel bearings. This isn't the end of the world but different than what was communicated.

They do look really cool!

If you're happy with them, I'll keep them in mind for my next purchase!

I can't say for sure on all of their wheels, but these carbon spoke wheels have hubs made by chosen. Bearings S&S ceramic. Hub design is star ratchet.

I can confirms that once I get the wheels.

I looked at a lot of carbon spoke wheels and it seems as though this is a very commonly used hub on rim brake variants. As long as it's machined well, I don't see that it's hard to mess up. Especially if they are using the star ratchet design as is in DT Swiss.  DT Swiss is my preferred hub on bikes. They just work and are easy to service.

From what I could gather the bearings looked to be common 6802 and 6902 variants. If that's the case, then if issues arrive with bearings it's an easy swap.

Not one I've ran across in my searches.

My experience this far with ace sprint has been exceptional. I'd highly recommend this far. Top notch communication.

Just got another update on the 60/75 combo. All done. Shipping today.

Was hoping for slightly darker grey logos since I'm not huge on big bling, but these will look spinning!

Regarding lightbicycle and rims...I just realized too that I'm often building my own wheels so likely that factors into my value equation and proce comparisons. They do a good job.

Great point on inflation and prices. Mainstream brands have been wildly crazy vs the stuff we're discussing.

Takiyaki I agree with you on those points. In particular the average cyclist hasn't a clue to look at these options.  95% of people who buy a bike are looking to the big brands for a variety of reasons the biggest of which they just don't know enough and want a carry away product.

Personally I appreciate people who are early adopters and willing to share their experiences on here or YT so I'm not sure why the knock.

Lightbicycle, nextie, etc kind of opened the doors to these less expensive direct options. They make great products, but if I'm being frank, their prices are slowly rivaling some of the more mainstream brands and the value isn't what it used to be.  That's not bad or wrong. It's just what it is and I think likely what their business goal was in the first place. Can't fault them for wanting to make an actual profit on what they're doing. I still consider them every time I'm looking, but end up just buying a similar product for less on Ali.

To each their own I guess. I have no issues with either side as it's just opinion.

Got a message from them yesterday. Decals and rear disc are done. Should have pics of the others later this week.

Best communication I've had from any seller. So far buying process has been superb.

Yep I got some of my shit from there

Great deals!  Wish we had some like that in the US. It does seem UK has many better deals on biking stuff. Even the secondary market is quite a bit less.
