Hi 7,

I'm pretty sure it will be a 68mm shell. (But let others confirm !!)  IF you ordered the BB30 it will be a standard BB30 not PF.

Something like this :

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-bb30-bb-assembly-kit-alloy-bearings/rp-prod40333

I installed the SRAM BB30 and it hasn't creaked yet.  However it seems that one of the bearings is already a bit crunchy !

Like it ! Do you have a weight for that 325 ?  The one I would need doesn't advertise its weight on the website !

Sussed, the WolfTooth 32 tooth is 73 grams.  The stock spider alone is 43 grams.

Cheers mate !

Had a similar problem with my original wheel order and a change of fork !

Double check this but I think the Novatec D771/D772 will cope with 9 and 12. While the D991/992 is a 4 in 1 which will accommodate all 4 standards as all 4 types of end caps are included.

(Have a look at novatecusa.net for all the D type hubs)

Interesting post Oolak.

This site and the the threads on MTBR are the sole reason I built mine up.  Other people are doing it so why can't  I ?  In reply to your last question, I completely agree that DIY is only going to get more popular the more positive experiences are shared.

Spare/replacement/ugrade parts have always been available.  Now we can add cheap Carbon frames and parts to the mix ! With this and the sheer amount of internet knowledge via forums/youtube etc it is making people more aware that self builds are achievable.

However I don't think its going to be a massive disruption, just a slight shift of needs.

Maybe less complete bikes will be sold but the LBS will still be relevant. I think I would've spent less time and money in my LBS if I had've bought a whole bike.

As I wanted a top end spec FS I would have had to shop around to find the best price, this would have meant buying online to save money.  When you're spending a few £K a few hundred pounds discount is massive. In theory I would've bought a bike ready to ride and had little need to walk through the doors of my LBS, obviously this does not help my LBS but thats the reality.

Now I have built my own, most parts came via the internet and post due to me being abroad and I had the time to browse and purchase at a reasonable price, then it was time to assemble the bike and thats where the LBS came in. BB and cassette needed fitting, then a wheel build with a new hub.  This led to skewers, seat post clamp, stem, lights, clothing, fluids, tools etc  and most importantly advice coming from the guys working in the shop !  I now have a relationship with my LBS that I don't think I would ever of had buying a whole bike. (I doubt I would have the same relationship even if I had bought a bike through them !)

Cheers Oolak !

One of the best decisions I have made to build up my own bike. Very satisfying and of course you get to know your bike inside out !

HT or FS, just get it built  8)

Hi Sussed, thanks for posting an update.  Looks like you have the front lockout sorted out, although I am wondering about the tie wrap on the end of the cable. If I did that to mine, I would half expect doing so would constrain the lock from rotating.  However, it must not otherwise yours would not have it that way.

Dont worry CD, the tie wrap is just to stop the cable hitting the forks when it flicks round during operation, the cable moves freely !  I will cut down the length of cable when I'm happy everything is OK and lose the tie wrap.v  8)

Build Updates !

I ended up installing the Fork Cable guide into the Steerer to keep the cable firmly in place.  Works as it should and have had no movement in the cable since.

I have been tinkering with my position on the bike since day one and now I have finally got it dialled in.  I had a Carbon seat post from XMI but I had to have the seat slammed back on the rails.....

I found a seat post that has a 32mm setback which now gave me more room to play with on the rails.

And lastly I replaced the Fox dual suspension lever and splitter box !   For those going with remote lock outs, skip the Fox system from the start.  The splitter box as well as looking very ugly it didn't last very long.  The lever was fine but the Scott Twinloc is a much better piece of engineering.

They certainly felt like plastic in my hand !  I know the bearings are ceramic.

Beautiful !

I am seriously considering one of these.  Can you give me a breakdown / build list on components.  Especially wheels !

After a particularly sandy, gritty ride at Sherwood Pines UK I stripped down the drivetrain and gave it all a good clean and service.  Once reassembled everything was back to being as smooth and crisp as the day it was installed.  (I reckon i have 600 miles on the bike)

I checked everything for wear and tear as it came off and to my untrained eye it all looked like new except for the chainring where the black coating had worn on the teeth which was to be expected.  I was surprised the jockey wheels had no wear at all as they are plastic !

I haven't checked the stretch on the chain but will do that later this week when I ride past my LBS

I have been looking ahead at replacement parts as they become worn.  XX1 is an expensive drivetrain but so far worth every penny.
After stumbling across an absolute steal on ebay for an FSA Ceramic BB30 I have been looking at other upgrades, mainly chainrings, chains, jockey wheels and the 42t cog.

Has anyone reading this upgraded/replaced XX1 with non standard parts.

The main component catching my eye is a one piece chainring by absolute black !

Hi paz,

You might want to check on the headset.  I think the 256 will need a tapered headset not the conventional you have linked to.  256 owners will confirm.

Chainreaction do the tapered Cane Creek which I have used ......

also I think people have used the headset that Xmi supply and have been happy with it.
