The thing I really appreciate about Sword is that the shifters are designed specifically for flared gravel bars so you get a good hand angle and flat tops to rest your palms on even when the shifters themselves are canted in line with the flare.

That’s a big difference from my first gravel bike that came with tiny little Tiagra shifters that are obviously meant for zero/low flare road bars and frequently hurt my hands on longer rides.

GRX is always ideal, but if you want something cable actuated that’s cheaper, I’m pretty happy with the MicroShift Sword/Juintech F1 setup on my CFR707.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Magene l508 vs garmin radars

What are people’s experiences with the Magene app for adjusting settings on the radar light? I’m on iOS and the reviews for the app in the store are absolutely terrible, almost all one-star. But a lot of those are from people using it for other Magene products.

I haven’t even bothered to download it yet but wanted to try playing around with some settings like brightness, and wondered if anyone had tips for using it in English because a lot of the bad reviews are for the fact that a significant amount of the interface is untranslated.

The 1286 has been sold by a couple of small companies, mostly in Europe I think, almost as long as the 1003/1266 has been out. This is the first I’ve heard about Carbonda offering single frames to the general public but maybe nobody’s asked in a long time?

My guess is that it handles pretty similarly to the 1003…I wonder how the kinematic graphs compare. For me at 205-215lbs I need an air shock at close to max pressure for the 1003 and I wonder if I’d be happy with a coil shock for supportive park riding/jumps on the 1286 or not.

Would love to build one up someday if I start riding more park, but the 1003 is already plenty of bike for me (if not overkill) on 99% of New England stuff that I actually want to ride — even park.

Cinelli Cork Ribbon is the gold standard IMO if you want a firm, “dry” (instead of rubbery/tacky) but grippy feel.

I’m experimenting with Wolf Tooth Supple right now on my new CFR707, which is 5mm thick and 40mm wide — I have big hands and usually run 33mm grips on my MTBs — but tricky to install, has a very “moist” feel, attracts every conceivable kind of dirt or debris and refuses to let it go.

I wish Cinelli Cork or something with a similar texture came in a thicker version, but normal width. I’ve had trouble finding any other tapes thicker than 2.5mm, and will probably just swap out to the Cinelli until I find something else that seems worth trying.

Build pics coming soon…I think you guys will find it interesting since this will be one of the most heavy duty, upright 707 builds out there:

60mm suspension fork, 50mm tires, 30mm of headset spacers, a 17 degree rise stem, Ritchey Corralitos bars (12mm rise, super shallow drop), 180mm rotors with Juin F1 brakes, MicroShift Sword, and MTB hubs — i9 Torch front, Hope Pro 4 rear.

It’ll drop some weight when I upgrade the suspension fork from the current Suntour GVX and get a carbon post, but is currently about 25lbs.

If this has been covered in the thread, I can’t seem to find it (except for one guy who tightened it to 5nm)…what torque are people setting the integrated seatpost clamp bolt to? I don’t want to over torque but I know some people have had trouble with slippage.

I’m using an alloy zero-offset post (Raceface Turbine) in my build so I guess carbon paste isn’t as necessary but my plan is to use some on the back of the post and leave the contact area with the internal clamp dry.

Ive been trying to get in touch with dengfu and still waiting for them to get back to me but it doesnt seem like anyone on here has built up one of these? Another thing i sorta dont like is the max tire clearance, i was hoping to fir proper mtb 2.2 inch tires

No, I’m not aware of anyone here building one. I would definitely have taken notice.

I think I’m about to take the title for most overkill gravel build here and all I’m doing is slapping a very upright cockpit and suspension fork on a CFR707.

Yeah, that’s an odd choice…100mm travel is pretty extreme for gravel but I kind of like that….48C tire clearance though? Weird. I would definitely want to put 2.1s or maybe even larger on a bike that capable.

There we go…we’re on page 13 now.

FYI for anyone who tried to post on page 12: it got hit by the blank page bug and doesn’t load. Repost here.

The blank page bug seems to be back…page 12 of this thread won’t load for me currently. I just get a blank white page with nothing on it (not even the forum page layout or a single character of text).

I’m looking forward to seeing how your build comes out. With the right accents, white can look amazing.

My second gravel bike build, "elevated" my riding too.  It is based on a 29er hardtail, and the bottom bracket is "elevated" about 20mm higher than my other gravel bike.

That’s going to be my 707 too…maybe even more “elevated” because I’m making the initial build with a 60mm(!) travel suspension fork, a Suntour GVX. Decent chance I’ll end up dropping it to 50mm if things feel too out of wack, but upright and super-capable for big mountain gravel descents/trail riding is the concept so I’m maxing things out to start and adjusting from there.

I’m on my third Carbonda build — a CFR 707 arriving in the next few weeks — and I’d be far from alone in steering you that direction. They’re worth the modest premium, which I should note is still way less than their branded equivalents.

Personally I get all my frames in matte black and add red parts/decals so I don’t pay for painting, but they do a decent job at that too.

My FM1002 and FM1003 feel great, have elevated my riding, and hold up under absolutely legendary levels of punishment. I expect the same from my 707 when it’s built.

Cyclocross Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: ICAN Gravel X Frame Crack
« on: March 25, 2024, 01:04:36 PM »
Yeah, I see what might be the subtlest seam (which could be called a “void” but isn’t really the same as what most people mean when they say that word) in the carbon sheet layup but no crack. Unless it grows I have considerable doubts that it’s a crack…the vast majority of cracks that aren’t caused by crashes will start at a tube junction and cause the paint to separate or fall off. The paint was intact over this seam until it was sanded off. This is far enough from the nearest junction that I’m skeptical.

It’s not impossible, but without being able to see it in person, I have my doubts.
