Re: My Dengfu R12 - First Impressions and Video Cool!
Thanks for sharing.
You have an awesome collection. I'm looking into the vb-r-177. Looking to know how yours goes.
Awesome video btw.

Re: Velo Build R-099 Build Hi all. Just want to add as a note for anyone looking to get the vb-r-099 frame set. Make sure to put the seatpost setback into account when measuring the top tube / reach.
This also goes for any frame with a seat post that is proprietary to the frameset.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-177
Final weight without bottle cages, computer mount, or pedals: 7.6kg
Difficult to tell in the photos but the paint is chameleon blue and purple. Blurple.

Size M
120mm Stem
400mm Handlebars

How is the 177 ride experience so far?
How is the stiffness of the separate stem and handlebar setup?
I have notice the Velobuild HB011 integrated handlebar flexes too much especially on the drops. I wonder if anybody observed this same issue with that handlebar?

Re: Velobuild VB-R-099 Build Questions
Well I added some sealant and they're definitely holding pressure now so I guess it will be ok.

Now onto another question...

Anyone else who has built an 099 (or something similar), how have you handled the front derailleur cable? The frame has a fitting on the down tube to house the cable outer, leaving just the shifter cable to exit the frame. I'm a bit worried to use this because if the outer ever comes loose from the fitting I would have to remove the bottom bracket to fix the problem.

The alternative is to get rid of the fitting and just run the cable outer all the way to the derailleur. I'm just a bit concerned that there isn't that much clearance and it could rub against the tire (I have 32C's fitted).

Here are some photos so you can see the setup...

Hi, attached here is a picture of how I did mine.
"pic.jpg" is my current setup. I got the port thing from an old frame but it doesn't flush nicely with this particular hole of the frame.
"pic2.jpg is an example of what I will buy in the future from Aliexpress to replace it.

I run a 28c tire and it doesn't rub against the cable housing.

All the best with your build :)

Re: Velobuild VB-R-177
Thank you guys for your input.

I'm doing the geometry check and I find the L very close to the "54" bike I had previously.

All lower measurements are almost identical:
Same chainstay (410), 2mm shorter Front-Centre (596 vs 598 in VBR177), BB drop is 69.5 vs 70,  same fork offset (45mm)

Angles are very similar: Head tube (73 both), Seat tube (73.5 vs 73.3)

Reach in my "54" bike is 391mm vs 395mm

The main difference is the head tube (170mm vs 155mm in VBR177) which yields to a higher stack in my old bike (570 vs 556) and explains the 4mm reach difference.
Am I wrong saying that the difference here comes down to one spacer?
---------------
Regarding the other bike (I don't have the geometry), I took manual measurements, giving longer seat tube, but slacker angle (~72)... Plus a shorter Head tube (160) gives a longer reach (I remeasured today at 405mm), The stack is actually 560mm.
I have ridden this 56 bike for 4 years.  I have played with the saddle position, it feels more aggressive, and have had 7hour rides on it.  But yeah, upon changing one to the other I feel the difference on the reach

----
The VB-R-177 M has significantly lower stack (536 vs 556), Reach is not compromised (392), so it has a smaller head tube (135mm) and the wheelbase is reduced.  The seat tube is also 20mm shorter.
Here I'm afraid I need more flexibility.

I'm going with the L

L sounds like the right choice for you if you previously ride a size 56. You can probably request for a zero setback seatpost if you are concerned about the reach. Additional 20mm or 30mm spacers may be helpful too since the 177 has a relatively lower stack in all sizes. If the handlebar stem you choose is at a negative angle (e.g. the HB011) it will cancel out the spacers and lower the stack, so watch out for that too.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Yes they'll come together, no worries. You can contact your velobuild support to double clarify for peace of heart.

Re: SEKA Bikes? Out of contact?
Thats generally a really bad way to adjust reach. While it will make your distance to the handlebars shorter, it'll tend to force more weight onto your hands and change your pedalling dynamics putting you at greater risk of anterior knee pain.

From experience of owning a vbr099 and a vbr177, the seatpost setback is an issue if not put into consideration when ordering the frame. For me the 099 seatpost setback is so backward that my knees does not track with the center of my pedals at 3 O'clock pedal position. I now run a zero setback seatpost on the vbr177 and this solved that issues and I have a perfect fit (Although my vbr177 stack is about 1-2cm lower compared to my vbr099 which I am ok with this stack).

He said the vbr177 frame "feels a bit too long and low". If I use a seatpost that has a setback on my current vbr177, it will definitely feel long and useless to me.
If his issue is similar to mine then he can try a zero setback 27.2 seatpost which is easy to borrow or buy to test, compared to the vbr099 proprietary seatpost. If it doesn't help then at least he tried it ;)

In my opinion there is no "generally - really bad way to adjust reach" or going about a bike fitting. You solve case by case bases, starting from the back side and then the front side of the bike.

Looking forward to a SEKA bike review soon!

Re: Velobuild VB-R-218 For me it kind of defeat the purpose of not wanting to own a copied branded frame. Gonna keep explaining on group rides that it's a VB frame and not an OEM dogma copy, but ya, who cares right!
VB is going to sell a lot of these just like the 168 is a big hit for VB.

Re: Dark Tranquillity is here
So, here is my version of VB-R-177.

Order placed in January, delayed by Chinese new year, procurement of spokes and hubs and a lockdown.

Custom paint and decals by Velobuild
Wheels are also from Velobuild (50mm), but customized with sapim CX ray spokes and Bitex 312 hubs
Groupset is all Shimano 105 hydraulic, with left crank PM (Xcadey)
Both rotors are SM-RT70-SS 140mm (also Shimano 105 series)
Tires are Conti GP5000 TL
Saddle is Selle Italia Flite FM Flow manganese rails

I didn't build it. I asked the LBS to do it for me as it.
They didn't report issues in the compression bolt, but did report misalignment in the front wheel brake caliper too, as well as they said it was the "wrong rotor".  I fixed both things:
- I flipped the caliper mount as per Shimano manual
- When aligning the caliper, I used the business card method, but also inserted a 6mm allen key between the rotor (closer to the hub) and the caliper mount, before tighten the lower screw.  The one on top I left it at 6Nm.

It looks really lovely, congratulations :)
