Title: 54/36 chainring on 105 R7000 crank arm
Post by: Velovelo on May 09, 2022, 09:07:02 PM

Hi guys!

I am looking to change from a 52/36 105 R7000 chainring to a 54/36 chainring combination.
Has anyone tried this successfully?

I am finding it difficult to find a 54 chainring brand that will work with my r7000 crankarm to make a 54/36 combination.
So far the only option I know of is to get a dura-ace 54/42 full crankset and that is way off my budget.
Or will the dura-ace 54 chainring work on a 105 r7000 crank arm?

Also I need to keep my 105 left crank arm because of my Xcadey power meter.

Any suggestion on where to find a 54 chainring that will work?

Thanks!

Rotor and Carbon-Ti are the only ones that spring to mind which aren't specficially for 1x Drivetrains.

Ok, thanks, I'll check them out

Fouriers at one point had 54-42 and 55-42. Couldn't find anyone on aliexpress with them in stock.

This is great and within my budget. I will get the Fouriers 54t and see if it can be paired with the R7000 36t ring.

Thank you!

i don't think the single chainrings have ramps to help shifting. Plus the teeth are longer to keep chain from falling off.

I could be wrong but I think the jump from 36 to 54 is to big for the Shimano derailleur (and ramps on the chainring). So you might not experience the best front shifts even if you find a chainring.

An 18t jump is bigger than the Shimano GRX 31t to 48t jump which is the biggest that comes to mind.

As the other poster said. Be careful. The single 54T they have here looks like its for a single ring drivetrain. Shifting in both directions is likely to be garbage if it even works.

I had a chat with a Fouriers seller who has confirmed that the 54t stand alone is for single ring setup only.
I will be on the lookout for when their 54/42 is available again.
For now I will go with a 53/36 combination as I've seen this work on youtube.

Thanks for all the tips.

Shimano Ultegra R8000 short cage rear derailleur has a max drivetrain capacity of 35t. A medium cage is 39t

54 - 36 = 18
28 - 11 = 17

18 + 17 = 35

Technically...that could still work, if you found a 54t crank that works with a 2x drivetrain. Otherwise you can always use a medium cage.

54t/40t chainrings for Shimano crank now available on AliExpress.
One of the sellers advised not to mix the stone chainrings, i.e. don't mix stone's 54t with stone's 36t like I wanted.
