29er / Transition Vanquish and it's chiner counterpart....
« on: April 26, 2017, 07:49:48 AM »
So Transition just released a super fun looking 29er. Long, low and slack like the rest of their bikes but the chainstay is 420mm!! The WW 062 that I have is one of the shorter ones at 430mm and it's a blast to ride. I would love to get the Vanquish but it's not in the budget at this time. I would love to see Peter or another vendor get close to it. Which I guess the CS-496 is pretty close but but it's also shorter in the top tube and reach but quite a bit.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: New Wheelset

Is $500 your max budget? If so, try to find some of the new Stans wheels. I have the Crest MK3 rims laced to DT 350 hubs and I've been very pleased with them. The are quite narrow at 23mm inner compared to what I normally like but they are on a XC singlespeed so they are fine.

If you could push it to $650ish, Peter can do most of his rims (pick your flavor) laced to DT 350 hubs using Sapim double butted spokes for about $650 shipped to the US. It's going to be VERY hard to beat that price for some good quality carbon rims and name brand bullet proof hubs. To save some weight, opt for the centerlock version of the 350 hubs.

I have 3 generic frames at the house. All came UD or 3k matte finish and I added some vinyl decals to them. Pretty easy to pull the decals off if I want to change up the color.

Peter did paint some rims for my wife's bike though. They look fantastic, color matched perfectly, and have been holding up great too. I would definitely let him paint my stuff in the future. For the cost, it just isn't worth the hassle.

29er / Re: 120mm travel fork on a 90mm carbon 29er frame
« on: April 24, 2017, 11:33:01 AM »
So I have 60 or 70 miles on the 062 setup as a SS with a 120 RS SID. So far I'm loving it. Handling has been great and the bike feels playful and fun. Not trail bike playful but more of a XC type of fun. I'm definitely glad I bumped it up to 120mm in the front.

What do you have for a fork on it? If it's easily changed to 140, I say go for it. If it involves buying a whole new fork, then that's a tough call. My wife's TB3 is 130f / 110r and it feels great. I wouldn't worry too much about having more travel in the front vs the back. It would suck though to buy a fork just to have it not work like you hope.

Speaking of this frame, how does one adapt a typical bottom bracket to BB92? For example, say I go for a Shimano 1x11 groupset - the XT MT800 bb states that is it compatible with 68mm and 73mm shell - what would you need to do to get it to work with BB92?

It's super simple, just get one of these.

This appears to be the XTR variety. I did find a Shimano XT BB though, hopefully that's the right one.

XTR, XT, SLX, or Deore, they will all work. I just searched for Shimano BB92 and that was one of the first that came up. And it was under $30.

29er / Re: Another CS-MB01 Build has started!
« on: April 12, 2017, 06:24:55 PM »
Not to derail the thread but I recently got a Gub 1159. It's 138mm wide and is nearly identical to my Bontrager Affinity RXL saddle from 2013 (before the WSD versions). Unfortunately I'm waiting for my new tires and the trails to dry out so I haven't tried it yet. $38 shipped so it's an affordable experiment.

Not sure. I've been wondering the same thing. My 062 frame is setup as a SS and I would like to get rid of the tensioner. I have the BSA option in both frames and they've been issue free.

New to the forum so hello all!  I ride a Salsa Bucksaw right now but will be upgrading to Nextie or xmiplay wheelset so if anyone has experience with fat tire wheels here please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks and look forward to a build this summer.

Welcome!

I have one set of Nextie rims and 2 from Peter. All 3 have been great and problem free. Most of the time, Peter will be cheaper, but Nextie does have some good pricing on rims on eBay. That being said, if I was looking for fat bike wheels, I would go with DT 350 centerlock hubs, Sapim CX-Ray spokes, and my rim of choice from Peter. His wheelset prices are very tough to beat.

And all sizes frames in UD matt first batch production can be availble in 20 days, we still have some frames left and they can be preordered now

I don't need one, unfortunately. But I do know some that are in the market. I wish I could get one of them to buy one so I can try it for myself.

And for those that are curious to what bike it is similar too, I think I found one that is VERY close, the Santa Cruz Hightower. There may be others though. The difference is that this has 122mm of travel vs 135mm, and the bottom bracket is 6mm lower on the CS-FS27.

I'm a very proportional 5'11" and ride the 18.5". Definitely stay with the 17". On most frames, I can do an 18.5 or 19.5 and be fine. This is not one of them. I love the bike and it's super fun but it is tall in the top tube. I am fine with the standover but I wish it had more as it's really close to being too high. I have the WW 062 in the 18.5 also and it doesn't feel as bad with the standover

Component Deals & Selection / Re: take chance on $15 NECO
« on: March 31, 2017, 09:22:37 AM »
My vote would be to get the NECO and then a CC lower race. The two generic frames i have, both came with the NECO headsets and they have been fine. But the lower race does not have any seals to it. It's just an aluminum lower race. I think the CC races that have some seals built into them would be a good addition if you thought it would help. And they are only $10 from any LBS.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: 24" frame options?
« on: March 26, 2017, 10:39:49 AM »
Here are some numbers I got before deciding. And yes the Trek numbers are correct.

ETT measurements
536mm - Tideace 14" 26er
525mm - TrailCraft Timber 26
515mm - Trek Superfly 26
529mm - Trek Superfly 24
521.4mm - GT Laguna 24
483.5mm - GT Laguna 20 (current bike)

I get that you want a 24" specific frame and I respect that. But before you completely right off the 26" frame, take a look at all the numbers.

This is what I found when I built the 26" bike.
20" bike had 70mm stem and 20mm setback post.
26" bike has 40mm stem and a straight post.
Measuring from the handlebar centerline to the center of the saddle, the distance between the two is about even. So it really isn't a major jump when it comes to fit. The only kicker is the overall height when they are sitting in the saddle. Which would be helped by running 24" wheels. My daughter is fine with standing to start and stop so it's a non issue.
