Post by: Andy on December 30, 2014, 07:27:14 PM
Well guys I fell so in love with the IP036 just had to go for the carbon wheels.  Carbon 30mm with thru axles and UD finish from Light Bicycle.  Weight 1490 grams.  Will be here for the weekend...I can't wait!
Andy. :)

Is that with Novatec hubs or something else?
Also, what spokes did you go with?

Yessir Novatec hubs and pillar spokes.  Can't wait to see if I can tell much difference with the lighter weight and wider footprint.  Thanks,
Andy

You will definitely feel the difference of the lighter wheels provided you don't saddle them with a crazy heavy tire setup.

Hi Vipassana,

I was gonna run Geax tires.  Mescal out back and a Gato 2.3 up front tubeless.  What tires do you use?  Thanks,
Andy.  :)

Looks like the rear is pretty light but the Gato - nearly 800g looking here:  http://www.competitivecyclist.com/geax-gato-mountain-bike-tire-29in?CMP_SKU=GEA0020&MER=0406&CMP_ID=PLA_GOc014&mv_pc=r101&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PLA&CSPID=0914&mr:trackingCode=A7E19CFA-0D40-E311-BA35-001B21BCB944&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=59971173781&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=80757368830&CMP_ID=PD_GOc014&CSPID=091&mkwid=sRD5idBDz_dc|pcrid|59971173781

Good price on those.
Doing a look around, Schwalbe Nobby Nic is only 50g lighter so at 2.3...that looks to be the going weight.

My experience with light tires, Schwalbe Racing Ralph, turned out to be not so good.  For the trails I ride with rocks, roots, and thorns, I quickly learned that lightweight tires are not durable enough for me.  Kept getting flats, could not trust the tires would hold air more than a day or two.  Eventually I got to the point where I became annoyed with the RR rear tire and pitched it in place of a Continental X-King which was much better, but not as reliable as the Geax Suguaro tires currently on my IP-057.

The Suguaro tires are a bit heavier but work well on a variety of trail conditions and have 120tpi construction which gives the tire a very pliable characteristic, nice on the hard tail because it allows just that little bit more ride compliance.

Thanks guys for the tire suggestions.  In the end I've decided to go with what I've used and been thrilled with.  the Gato up Front and Mezcal out back.  I just love 'me!  Thanks Again,
Andy

Did my first ride on the new wheels this afternoon.  Did a local 12 mile loop with my buddy.  Absolutely blown away by the difference of these wheels.  Truly a night and day difference on the ride.  I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend the carbon wheels.  Completely different bike now.  much easier to propel, much better traction, climbs amazing, handling is razor sharp.  These wheels are simply unbelievable!

I told you you'd like them.   Mine seem to be holding up really well at this point with a couple thousand miles on them.
