After The Ride / I think I am officially a "Bike Snob".....
« on: July 07, 2016, 08:59:21 AM »
So awhile back, my wife started calling me a bike snob. Why? I think it's because I have been working on helicopters for 20+ years and I am very particular when it comes to things working properly. I don't need the best brands, heck, 2 of my bikes aren't even a brand at all. She thinks it's because I need to have the best bikes and tweak them until they are perfect and then either 1) start tweaking her bikes, 2) buy a new bike, or 3) start tweaking the same bike all over again. Who is correct is still up for discussion.

I do think that I am starting to win though. She had never expressed any burning desire to try my bikes. Well one day a few weeks ago, I convinced her to go on a women's group ride that was happening about a mile from our house. It is pretty flat but also very technical with all the rocks and roots and I mentioned that she should take the 29+ bike. Well she comes home glowing from how the ride went and how she loved the bike. So now that she has the Tallboy 3 frame and we are getting all the parts ordered, she is wanting the build to be similar to the 29+ bike. She is now starting to see how too much weight, poor shifting, and poor suspension setup can kill a bike. So maybe, just maybe, she is becoming one too....

Am I alone or is there a place where there are others like me and we can have meetings or something?

Component Deals & Selection / Re: CX-Delta spokes

So I think I figured it out. The Delta's are just flattened and the Rays are a full bladed profile, other than that, they are the same. I think the Chinese vendors use them as a cheaper OEM option when building up hundreds of wheels. That being said, Peter's price only varies by $.05 USD per spoke. So it was pretty easy to spend the extra $3.20 and just go with the CX-Rays this time. If I need to get replacement spokes (yes I got 8 extra from Peter) it should be a bit easier to find a match here in the states and not wait for international shipping.

cable guide and cover:
rear derailleur inner cable slot / front derailleur inner cable slot

I ran full length housing on mine. That is a neat guide though, I don't have one of those so maybe mine was designed a bit differently. I will pull the cover off this weekend and see what's up. I do remember that on their plus frame, I had to drill out the cable entrance hole on the chainstay to get the housing inserted. The good thing is that I was only drilling aluminum. There is a metal guide bonded into the carbon so I didn't have to drill into the carbon structure.

Finally some pictures about the chainlength..

What do you think?

Judging by these two pictures, I would take at least one link out. I like to run my chains as short as possible and it seems to keep things a bit quieter too.

We didn't get a chance to demo one so I hope it all works out. We did take a Transition Smuggler out for a good day of riding and the geo is pretty close to the TB3. I'm a fan of the new short travel slack head angle bikes and it should suit her quite well. She is also a huge fan of my 29+ hardtail so that is sort of why we chose to go the 29er route. If she wants a plus bike, she can take the 29+.

During the demo ride, the Stache was so much fun that it just eclipsed my demo ride of the Hightower.  I do like suspension design of the SC bikes, being one piece, that rear triangle is very stiff.  If I can find one in that $3,600 price range I may consider it.

I am currently building a Tallboy 3 for my wife in the 29" flavor. I bought the frame and will build it from the frame up. It will come in more than $3,600 but it won't even be close to the $6,500 list price. Once it's done, I'm going to throw my 27.5 wheels with 35mm rims on it with some nice plus tires and see how she likes it. Hopefully she prefers the 29er version for summer use as she won't want to pay for another wheelset.....

I'm glad you made it out without any issues and I'm with you on this one. Rims and frames I can do, but handlebars, not so much. I'm in the process of building a new SC Tallboy 3 for my wife and she asked about the chinese handlebars. I shot down that idea pretty quick. The extra $100 to get a Easton or RaceFace is worth it when I imagine the possible penalty for error on handlebars. I was on a local group ride last fall where another rider broke their relatively new Bontrager carbon bar. Luckily she was fine too. I do have to say that my 9 year old 75 pound daughter has one on her bike though.

Beautiful scenery. I wish I lived so close to a ski resort!

What are you using as a tensioner?

That ski resort is Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The trail system they are building up there is amazing. Last I knew, they had over $200k in cash and incoming grants to spend on MTB trails.

The tensioner is a Blackspire Stinger. It took a bit of tweaking before I got the position right but now I can just slide the roller up and down a bit to adjust tension. It has worked flawlessly so far.

Who is using them? I see that Peter is using them in his wheel builds but I can't find much on them. I was hoping to use CX-Rays but if these are cheaper, I may try them. I can't find much but what I can find is that the weight is the same but the profile is rectangular instead of bladed like the Rays.

Nope. All can be mixed. Just keep everything 11 speed.

Here is a current picture of my 062 in SS mode with a 100mm Sid XX up front. 21 pounds as it sits. I would like to get it lighter but it will have to do for now.

Yup, same one I have been looking at for awhile. It is a great price on a nice Reba. I'm not sure if the color will go with the wife's yellow/turquoise theme though.....

Now is my bike finished and I have test run it two times. The frame is 18.5 and the weight is 9.3kg with pedals. :)
I will in next week run it in a competition of 78km xc race.

Nice! Any better pics of the fork? I was thinking of getting that one for my wife's new build.

I agree with Carbon_dude. Pick one or the other and go as light as you can. Especially with the wheels.

As far as 29+ or 27+, that is a tough call. I went with 29+ because I wanted a bad weather / winter bike that is a summer time rock and root eating monster truck with out being a fat bike. I already have a trail bike so there wasn't a need to make it that way. My wheels consist of the RM950C rims (50mm outer / 43mm inner widths) from Peter, Hope Pro4 boost hubs, DT Swiss Aerolite spokes, and DT Swiss Pro-lock brass nipples. The total weight was 1872 grams without tape or stems. They definitely aren't super light, but considering their size, they are far from heavy. The wheels on my singlespeed are DT Swiss aluminum rims (18mm inner), DT 350 hubs, DT Aerocomp spokes and aluminum nipples and they weight 1725g. On back to back rides, I can tell a difference between the two but I'm not sure if it's due to weight or just tire size and the massive contact patch with the ground. It's not a fat bike type of ride, and it doesn't feel heavy either, it just feels different.

What will be the main use for this bike and what type of terrain are you riding?

Enter!!!

My wife needs a plus bike too.

Here is what it could look like if you win! The frame was purchased before Peter had his available but the RM950C rims did come from him.
