Really? You've ridden one and I haven't and I trust your opinion but it just really seems like those huge ass tires would have significant effects on the ride of the bike. Seems if they could get them light enough then ultimate awesomeness would be achieved. So, I'll definitely reconsider getting one until I've at least ridden one, and a really nice one.

I was thinking that I'd ultimately allow myself a stable of three chiners.. The 057 is one, the 036 will be on most likely... and that carbon fat bike pic I posted was making me consider a fatty. Getting 27.5 just seems a little redundant but maybe you can talk me out of that opinion as i saw that you left some positive comments in the 27.5 thread about the wheel size def being better than 26.

Also, I've read that the first thing I should do is check to make sure the drop out screws weren't loose, and that I may even want to put some loctite on the screws.

So that's my first step.

Okay guys, full disclosure: I am in no way shape form or fashion a bike mechanic. I'm not even mechanical.

So.. I'll be asking lots of dumb questions along the way, but hopefully this will only help to serve as a better resource for those that are just like me and decided to do their first chiner builds regardless of their lack of mechanical skill.

Okay.. first dumb question:

The white things sticking out of the frame, are those the internal cable guides and I need to cut them to fit, or do those come out entirely?

The one from the bike rumor article looks like a winner:

Hey CD... this speaks to what I was saying in the fat bike thread about how I think having high end components, especially wheels, is what it's all about with fat bikes.

From the article:

"the Salsa Mukluk shown above lost about 7 pounds when the Rolling Darryl wheelset and 45NRTH tubed tires were swapped out for the ensō685."

7 pounds off your wheels! That's got to be a night and day difference and I bet they get even lighter.

I suppose he's trying to figure out which the most popular would be. I think the problem would be that fat bikes are so new.. there's less people to get feedback from. Like you, I was surprised that these wheels were already so widely available.. so maybe there's more info to be had than I assumed.

So, last night Peter from Iplay emailed me basically to try to get an insight into what I thought would be the most in demand features and designs for his new line of fat bike rims that are in the works..

First of all, while I absolutely do appreciate that he reached out to me like that, and think it's very smart of him to try to get that kind of insight.. He has grossly over estimated my technical mtb wheel building knowledge  :)

I honestly have no clue how to answer Peter's questions but would love to help him get these answers, while simultaneously giving riders exactly what it is that they want.. So with his permission, of course, I thought i'd see if anyone of you guys (I know there's not many of you yet) either had some wheel building knowledge, or knew someone that did.. specifically related to fat bike rims.

Here.. I'll just let you hear it in Peter's words. Would probably be the best way, but keep in mind.. English is his second language but his questions are very clear..

Hi Rob,

How are you?

And could you let me know more details of fat bike rims that you think is idealest? I mean OD, ID and ERD. And what about the distance between drilling holes ?

I plan to make new models for 80mm width and 100mm width, these two kinds of rims can be clincher and tubeless compatible. You know, our previous 80mm rims are for clincher only, not compatible for tubeless.

And Which design will be the most idealest ?

Or do you have any design and could you send me? Maybe I can make the rim mould same as your design

And we will have carbon fat bike frames available soon

Best Regards,
Peter

Okay.. That's it.  Anyone?

Cool thread.

I'd be all over that seatpost if they made one. Wonder how many potential customers it'd take to get a Chindor (tired of typing out Chinese carbon vendor, and since this place seems all about innovating, thought I'd try to make my small contribution ;D) to actually manufacturer one of these posts? 100? 1000?

Hahaha... Chinese carbon vendor is now officially dubbed "chindor"

Thanks for your contribution, Izzy.

Good point CD however I would love to see one of these built for mtb.  Great idea SN!  All I really need is a little bit of suspension out back and on my trails I mostly stay seated.

This answer would be an inexpensiv, simple and very light alternative to full suspension.  I've ridden my buddies Bike with a thud buster and really liked it.  This could be just a very lightweight version of that.

Now how do we get them to build us some?
Andy

Yup.. the short travel thudbuster was almost included in my current build. And I may still get one if no other options become available soon enough.. but it's just too ugly and heavy to put on my full carbon chiner at this point. The above would work better, look better, and probably be lighter than a conventional carbon post. 1-1.5 inch of travel would be all I need with my 2.35 tires and carbon bike and components, for my mostly smooth local trails.

As far as getting them to actually build it.. I dunno.. I guess I could simply ask lol. But I don't want some one-off version that hasn't been thoroughly tested by the community, so I assumed that getting public demand going would really be the only way. Hopefully, in time, this thread/site can help bring about some of those kind of things.

Nice seat post, however, doesn't do anything for me when I'm standing up and flying down a rough section of trail :).

That's what the legs are for, man! I do see your point though.. Me thinks you're becoming spoiled by your 036  ;D  Interested to see how often you throw a leg over your 056 now.

Guess that's a pretty good point. Actually  looking at adding a 40t-rex to my set-up.. Was going to hold off on making that upgrade because so many guys were having issues with the chain dropping off on the 42t cogs.. but it seems there are less issues with the 40t and reading your 036 thread I saw that you kinda had the same issue with the xx1 until you got it dialed in. Made me think that maybe the issues that people were having were less to do with incompatibility and more to do with individual set up and getting it dialed in.

^^ To me it seems that with a fat bike build having high end (light ) components would be crucial.

The bike you posted is steel with low end wheels it looks like.. Imagine it an all carbon (frame, rims, post, bars, stem, seat) decked out in xx1... Would be an entirely different beast I'd assume. I also think the tire manufacturers are going to be coming out with some fat tires that can affect the ride drastically with their weight and performance. Cross country/weight weenie fat bike.. it's coming.

That's why I've been somewhat put off by fat bikes thus far.. They just look and seem sluggish. But seeing that all carbon one above, made me reconsider the possibilities. Either way, it's definitely something I'd ride first before buying as I realize that what you said could turn out to be completely accurate and therefore make it more of a "novelty" bike.. Which I have no interest in.

Gotta get myself a test ride in on one decked out in all carbon and top end components.

One of the many reasons I decided to stick with a hardtail 29er is I expect to see some very well designed, effective, and light weight suspension seatposts coming out over the next year or two. What i'm waiting on is an mtb version of Ergon CF3 carbon pro seatpost:

Would love to see one of these Chinese carbon manufacturers bring an mtb version of this thing out. Doesn't seem as if it would be all too hard to engineer.. Could basically use the Ergon as a template but beef the carbon rods and bearings up a bit..

Just an idea.. Seems like a price point of $75-$100 would work for both parties. I'd be the first paying customer.

823
Haven't really been all too interested in fat bikes to be honest. But was clicking through some random mtb sites this morning and came across this pic..

I wonder if the carbon fat tire forks will be available when the frame is. I also wonder if these Chinese carbon vendors will be trying to charge more for the fat bike frames than the 29er and 27.5 frames. Doesn't seem the price would or should be any different, but we'll see.

Either way.. This bike does it for me and I'll probably build a chiner version. Just looks too cool not to own it. This exact build - hopefully with SRAM xx1 1x11 would be ridiculously sweet.

In my dreams CD.. When I awake.. Shimano/Raceface narrow wide 1x10.

Really looking forward to some trickle down tech on this xx1 1x11 group. Wasn't too impressed with Shimano's new XTR.. I think they may have missed the boat. Then again, Shimano may just know slightly more than I do about the MTB drivetrain market.
