Component Deals & Selection / 24" bmx carbon frames
« on: April 21, 2024, 08:34:39 AM »
Moving just round the corner from a pump track soon.  Don't really want to get air or have additional service complication of a dirt jump bike, so decided to get a 24" (cruiser pro) bmx.

Carbon ones definitely exist, and I've found a few Chinese suppliers selling 20" ones, but none so far advertising 24" ones.  Anyone know of a source?

Don't really want to pay $2k for a branded one which is open mold anyway.

IMO this could be an excellent high tire clearance gravel frame with the addition of an FD mount and either a 100mm suspension fork or rigid alternative.  Reach isn't crazy long, head tube is relatively slack but not too far gone for rolling hardpack or tarmac, and nice steep STA (little steeper than most gravel frames) for the lung bursters.  Seat tube is just long enough.  It's also very light and generally speaking OG Evkin stuff is good quality and customer service also decent.

Oh and the custom paint jobs (which they usually don't show on AliExpress) look good.

They currently don't do one with an FD mount, but I asked them about one with compatibility for GRX 46/30 or similar, and they said they're considering it.  Potentially it would be better if they switched to PF30 or BSA73 though, as BB92 might cause crankset compatibility issues (too wide) as it does on the Salsa Cutthroat which is nominally GRX 2x compatible but can run a sum total of one RaceFace crankset for the purpose, which is heavy as balls, not very good and has poor quality proprietary BBs.

Hoping it happens.  It was a real disappointment when the Carbonda / Fly Bike 1306 lost its FD mount.  There are a bunch of Ti and steel monster-gravel bikes, but they tend to be very heavy if steel, and heavy and very expensive if Ti.

Component Deals & Selection / Lewis Bike (Trickstuff 2 & 4 piston clones)

Anyone got any intel?  Was inevitable that some Chinese clones appeared.  Given the selling price, they're hopefully decent quality.

Surely someone must make one.

I'll be getting a gravel bike that comes with an ACR headset and SMR stem stock.   I'll be changing the stem to a Redshift one.   Whilst I could file the 2 locator pins off the ACR to SMR adapter that will be on the bike, it will leave a gaping hole at the front of the spacer stack.

Surely someone has made an ACR spacer to normal stem semi-integrated spacer?  I just can't find it.

AFAIK all of Arc8's bikes are Chinese open mould.

Anyone know which the Eero is?

I'm interested because it has fully integrated cabling and they actually have a 70mm stem option.  Usually 90 is minimum.

It showed up in the new Gee Milner vid.

Component Deals & Selection / Chinese aero style gravel bar?
« on: September 17, 2020, 07:34:35 PM »
Dream is an Aeroghaiai .... but they're €350 and unobtainium currently.

The only Chinese aero gravel bar that I've seen is one with an integrated stem.  The new LightCarbon HBR08, which just came on the market. Minimum is 90mm stem and I've also just bought an 80mm stem. Reach and drop of the bar are relatively high by modern standards (82 /125).  Still, better than anything else I'm aware of.

Loads of other 3T style bars on the market, but nothing like the Aeroghaiai or even the Superghaiai.

Why aero on gravel? Because deep, flat parts at 3 and 6 o'clock are way more comfortable if you have big hands.  After fitting the aero bullhorns on my track / city bike, I now hate skinny circular drop bars .... they feel uncomfortable and strange   :'(

P.S. I gave up on the aerowave style bars due to being unsure about quality, and also some flare may be wise if I'm to travel with the bike - potentially to somewhere more gnarly and rolling than the Amsterdam area  :D

Shimano only sell 40T and 42T, but can you put a 46T on?  Or will that cause issues with the default 11-42 cassette?

Component Deals & Selection / Reliable Aerowave style bar suppliers?
« on: August 31, 2020, 03:09:08 AM »
I'd like to get a pair of the Aerowave style riser drop bars.

However from what I see on AliExpress, the quality of the popular 'EC90' branded ones is appalling. Material, at least at bar ends, is of very unneven thickness, and there's pitting and micro perforations all over them. Other brands have less feedback though.

Various people on WW and RG have posted that they're happy with ones they bought, so I can only assume they're not all like this.

Anybody have experience?

Anyone have any experience with these?  They appear to be the same front triangle and chainstays, but with conventional seatstays on the 208 and dropped seatstays on the 209.

Do we know if this is open mould - in which case who else does them - or is it exclusive to them?

Geometry is a little bit more relaxed than the Carbonda 696.  Though they don't appear to have listed geo for the 58 yet.

Component Deals & Selection / Nice 144BCD Crankset?
« on: July 24, 2020, 07:33:35 PM »
Ali not turning up much. XACD will probably make one, but at 144BCD it'll likely be considered custom and cost ~$300.  At which point I might as well just order Royce.

Anybody know of some nice 7xxx, 2xxx aluminium, or titanium cranks that are pret a porter?  CN or TW.

There are a few 130 options, but bugger all at the track size.  And of course we have Fovno / Dexas for MTB.

Component Deals & Selection / 25.4 drop bars in carbon?
« on: July 06, 2020, 09:36:13 AM »
Can't find them anywhere. There's so much niche stuff produced in China, it's almost unbelievable that nobody seems to do them.

I know the small clamp size on a drop bar would likely prove prone to failure, but surely they could use thicker tubing? I know that then makes it heavier, but it still has better ride quality than ALU.

Maybe my Google-fu is just lacking?  Anybody know of or can find a source?

Component Deals & Selection / Ali Speed Palys

Anyone tried the Zero copies with titanium spindle and cleats for around €70/$80?

Can't find any reviews.

Always thought Bebops were way better, but only got 2 pairs of cleats left.

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Velobuildmall

Anybody know who their OEMs are?  I've been lead to believe they're purely a retail operation.

Mostly heard decent things about their customer service, and prices are good - also they're transparent with all costs listed on the site.  Shipping costs appear to be very competitive - presumably because they shift way more product overseas than the actual manufacturers who sell direct do.

Depending on who actually makes their stuff, I was thinking of picking up a hardtail and a couple of stems and seatposts.

14
Doing a bar upgrade from track drops to bullhorns on my single speed.

There's lots of brand choice on AliExpress, though it looks like 90% might be using identical moulds, and maybe the same OEMs.

Anyone know of a reputable firm offering then direct?  I thought Light might, but they said they don't yet.

If not, what about the Ali brands?  No Name, RXL, TOSEEK, OG-Evkin, and a bunch of others.

15
Not carbon, but they seem to do some beautiful stuff in the fixie / ss / retro road & track segment, made from various Reynolds tubing.

However I can only find them sold by third parties on AliExpress, with little info.

Anybody know what their website is, or if this is just a brandname for a retailer on AliX, who the OEM is?

Thanks
