29er / 256 Long-Term Durability?
« on: July 31, 2014, 04:17:46 PM »
Was hoping to see if there was a general consensus yet as to the durability of the 256 frame? The 057 has pretty much been put through it's paces enough over the past year or so without pics of cracked frames popping up (I actually can't recall seeing even one durability issue with the 057 - one of the attractive features of the frame imo) but seeing as how the 256 is newer, it hasn't quite proven itself.

That said, there are plenty of those frames being ridden around right now, and so far haven't seen any known issues with it either. Of course, some were/are cautious of the whole bottom bracket trap door thing.

Was hoping to here from anyone who has a 256 frame and has ridden for at least a few months or more in fairly difficult terrain.. Any issues? Trap door is a non-issue, I assume?

Oh man, those frames look awesome. Love the stripe apint schemes - especially the light blue.

As for the brakes, I ordered some from CRC before and they were packaged exactly as yours were. Pretty common for them to send the wrong type of Shimano olives so you might want to make sure they got that right in all six sets.

Yeah, the frame is still a chiner, I'm sure. PlanetX is just the reseller. Just assuming - don't know that for a fact.

Pink? Awesome! I was actually considering pink myself.

Here's a pic of the frame I dug up:

Oh, you building up the rims you won? Sweet. The general forum consensus seems to be the the 350 hubs are far and away the best bang for you buck hubs. Good choice, imo. Sorry, no experience with the Novatechs.

As for your question - I'm not a total wheel building novice having helped a friend of mine build up a set of xt hubs and WTB i23 rims.. and from my limited experience I's assume the same as you. That the 291 length all the way around is the way to go. That said, I'm actually confused about something you said already so perhaps I should keep my opinions to myself.

You asked:  "will there be enough threads on the spoke if I use a 291 instead of 289?"

I actually thought that there were the same amount of threads on spoke, regardless of length.

If that question is painfully ignorant, at least you know to ignore my opinion  :D

My Bitex hub sounds similar, only a little more busy as it a 6-pawl hub while the Novatec is only 4-pawls.  The smoothest, best sounding hub in my opinion is still the DT Swiss hubs with the star ratchet system that is on my XR1450 Spline wheels.

So how to have wheel built with DT Swiss hubs? You have to buy them and send them to your chindor or they stock them and build them all in-house?

Ah, yes... Very exciting to have all the pieces laid out in front of you, I'm sure!

I'd say it's pretty encouraging to hear that all advertised weights are at least close to accurate. Most of the time advertised weights are always higher than actual weights. Either that, or the company is too cautious to post any estimated weights at all. Can't stand it when they do that.

And yes, water your plant bro lol

Very nice ! Nice to see the builds.

Can you create a short video of the sound of the Novatec rear hub ?

If it's not asking too much I would really like to hear these hubs, as well.

Those are really good weights for such wide rimmed wheels. What are your initial impressions of the Novatech hubs so far? I'm currently trying to decide whether to go with the Novatech or some Bike Hub Store hubs.

PM sent. I actually think it looks pretty cool without the wording. I'm not big on having brands logos all over my bike - this is more my style.

Interested to see what the final versions look like. I've also tried to have stickers made (skateboard) from a design that friend made in photoshop and you're right about it being difficult to get them exactly like you want them.

Sweet.. Another build thread. I'm not sure if I have some type of disease or something but I could literally look at chiner build threads all day. lol.

Which chendor did you go with and how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

UD matte for me. I love the flat black industrial look!

That said, I've never seen that marble finish before either, and looks really nice too. Wish it was available as an option for a chiner.

If that's the case, then I say definitely take the route you're planning on, rigid fork and xtr, for sure. May even turn out that you like the rigid fork, not mention the pinstriping can be carried over onto the rigid fork and make a more complete looking bike. So at least for pictures - you need the rigid fork  ;D

The fact that its a rigid fork my make it difficult to claim the illustrious title of most expensive chiner. Either way, custom pinstriping and xtr 1x11 sounds like a ridiculously sweet ride. Can't wait to see it.

How'd this turn out. Get it figured out?

Very interested in seeing how this turns out.

You painting all one solid color or some type of design?
