Title: Current Wheelset Offerings for Climbing
Post by: andrew on October 06, 2023, 04:38:39 PM
Hello Chinertown!

I've been scouring Ali/eBay for a decently light/shallow, disc, thru-axle wheelset for my climbing build and was wondering if there was any experience here? Is it possible to find a good set for $500ish USD delivered?
My current interests are these:

Are there other brands out there that have been proven in the streets that I may be missing?

Wait until 11/11 and then get the Elite Edge for $500.

Agreed - assuming the Edge is that price again like it was in the last big sale. By far the best lightweight option in that price range.

I built up a set of 30mm deep wheels for about 400USD. It weighs around 1120g. I can't quite give a verdict yet as I don't have many kilometres on it yet. So if you're willing to source some lesser known parts from ali, you can build something pretty light for pretty cheap.

Did you build them yourself? I haven't made it down that avenue yet, but I'd love to. I started building a diy truing stand a while back. Now might be the time.

Yeah, I did build them myself. Probably not as true as can be, since my truing stand is just my bike with zip ties...

I actually have a damaged wheelset, my own fault, that I purchased from Wing at Carbonda. The hoops are destroyed but the DT350 hubs and spokes are decent. The problem is Wing said the hoops weren't available any more. The other thing is that they are 28 hole hubs and the road rim selection for those appear to be pretty slim. I'd love for these hubs to see more life as they probably only have 10k miles on them. Anyone know of any good 28H hoops that don't cost a fortune to get over?

I personally have been really interested in the GRO2 wheels / rims from Yuan An Composites. The complete wheels with the RD13 hubs are just outside your budget but at 1450g, 45mm deep and a modern 32mm wide they check a lot of boxes for me as an allrounder.

This is the first I've heard of Yuan An Composites. Do they have a pretty good reputation?

I dont really know their relationship to Elite Wheels in terms of ownership but if you read carefully they are listed as the manufacturer for Elitewheels. Ive been on their email / sales list for a couple of years, but have always sourced rims from LB instead. MOQ varies by model, but GRO2 is currently listed a one set.

These rims are marketed with the similar process specs including the complete removal of the bladders and not needing to use a release agent as the higher end LB rims.

It is a very gratifying experience if you try.
Novatec 711/712 are very light, good and cheap.
Light bicycle can provide you very light rims. Even carbon aero spokes(maybe harder to start with than Pillar or CX-Rays).
So you can end at about 1kg for a wheelset.

I build almost all of my wheels myself and you can indeed build a set for 350-400 EUR that is 1100-1200gr.
I am having trouble buying the Novatec 411-412 hubs from Ali (seems like every seller uses these as some sort of scam...) and they are too expensive to buy in the EU (>200 EUR).
I have now ordered a set of Goldix R180 hubs to build my next MTB wheelset. I hope they have upgraded the ratchet mechanism because I was hesitant to buy Goldix hubs until now because of all the bad reviews...
You can get the Novatec 791-792 hubs very cheap on ali if you wait for the sales. Than you have a 1200 gr wheelset for a little over 300 eur.

Which hoops and spokes are you using?
I was looking on Ali for 711/712, but the all seem to be QR. The closest I could find that fit my needs are Novatec D791SB-CL D792SB-CL. $61.36 USD A pair which seems pretty good. Claimed weight 407g

I have w contact to a company from xiamen who produces wheels for elite wheels. You can get rims, same good hubs or full rims for great price

It's the 411/412 and not the 711/712 that you should look for... But I had trouble with the last 3 or 4 sellers I tried ordering from, so I would be very careful if you want to order from Ali. They always say they have them in stock which is a lie most of the time. The Goldix R180 is on sale for the moment, but the Goldix ratchets are notoriously unreliable, so I won't recommend them yet. They should arrive this week.

I use 30x30mm asymmetric rims off Ali (315 gr) and Sapim Laser spokes and aluminium nipples I buy from a EU webshop.

With the Novatec 411/412 and 24 spokes you should get to about 1100gr. The 791/792 is a little heavier but also quite a bit cheaper.

For my new gravel wheels I went with RD13 hub and pillar wing 20 spokes. This is the same hub Elite is using in their top wheels like Elite Edge. Here if You choose You can build elite edge wheels without elite logo which reflects the price :)

In the attached file You can see rims they offer.

This the the Alibaba shop for Yuan An: https://xmcarbon.en.alibaba.com/index.html. It has some prices listed which could be useful as a reference.

Direct Link to the GRO2 wheels, I mentioned earlier: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/GRO-2-NEW-Forged-Pattern-Gravel_1600449606803.html. I would also go for the the Wing 20 spoke option.

Unless you already have a trading account on Alibaba, I would go through kubackjeees contact, sounds like you can get a better discount and probably better service.

Here is the quotation for GR02 and this is before discount. I think the price is extremely good. Way better deals then those heavy narrow aliexpress wheels or low quality ryet stuff.

I decided to go for a custom build 34 depth 25 iw hookles. The GR02 with 45 a little too deep for gravel for my taste.

Thanks Jakub! :-)

I already have answer via Whatsapp - unfortunately the email address does not work anymore.

But I already have feedback and confirmation - I asked in parallel to the EliteWheels Edge and am curious what price is called ;-)

"You could purchase the carbon rims from us directly. We have no brand premium and the price will be more cost-effective."

As for the email now I see it is my fault! It should be sales@yuananbike.com ... I ate the "an" when typing it here. Sorry for that! Good to here that You managed to contact Leon anyway. Curious about the asweel :)

I have now also received a price.
That is really good compared to the normal price via Elitewheels/Aliexpress.

But still 100 dollars more expensive than the promotional price in conjunction with an AliExpress coupon code.

But very nice and fast contact - and big advantage: faster delivery and completely custom build possible.

What price did You get. During the last big sale on AliExpress, with the coupon and tax free shipping to Poland the price for elite edge was around 585$ when I've checked. Now it is 685$ at the checkout.

Why tf I was getting worse prices even when I have like the highest diamond member status?! Maybe I need to change price for dollars instead of local currency?

Still talk with leon about the price becuse if the new GR02 cost around 500 don't know why the edge equivalent should be over 600.
Title: Re: Current Wheelset Offerings for Climbing
Post by: WhityWhite on October 12, 2023, 01:23:51 PM
I do not know why.

But I can only explain that about $600 is really the lowest price including shipping we can sell to the end customer. and the further discount of the Elite Edge was subsidized by Ali Express at the sales.

Rd13 is not the designation for the hub?
And you write you have the rd28.
Do you have a link?

Ceramic bearings are beautiful and of course run nicer. But not noticeable and the maintenance susceptibility is higher.
Not to mention if a carbon spoke is broken. You do not get so easily replaced.
Therefore, I decide against carbon spokes.

I wish you in any case good trip and fun with the set!

True, RD13 was not listed. I asked for the lightest possible build for the best price. Leon suggested this, I asked if he could remove the ceramic bearings and use steel (I'm not a big believer in ceramic), he said that these hubs were made for them, so worst case scenario, I put steel bearings in after they deteroriate. Also carbon spokes are new to me, it'll be a learning experience. I have never had a regular spoke brake or fail. We shall find out together if this was a good decision or not  ;D

It appears the carbon spokes require a special hub. This is what I found on it:

There are 2 versions of carbon spokes. The more common spokes require special hub, brands like Elite, Magene, etc use these spokes. Less commonly found carbon spokes can be used woth standard huns, i.e. DT240. Farsports uses both types of spokes for their builds

I got Elite Edge gravel 35x31s. They weigh ~1370g. They were on sale for about $600 a while ago; don't know where they're at now.
