Title: Gravel bike project
Post by: vknez on November 02, 2023, 07:20:13 AM
I am in the process acquiring new gravel bike and idea is assembly it around carbon frame from aliexpress.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005678330464.html

Carbon frame bottom bracket T47

There is also older version of this frame but with press fir bottom bracket 386
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003550054274.html

From start I was thinking built it with Sensah groupset but two things I do not like: mechanical/hydraulic brake combo and most of the cranksets have aluminium spindle (which can and does brake).
So I opted to GRX400 version with crankset 46/30. Most expensive things are shifters. Hydraulic shifters from Sensah compatible with GRX (PRO HRD) are in similar price range.

Related with wheels I do not want anything fancy and pricy, so something like this:

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/mavic-allroad-disc-6-bolt-shimano-wheelset
https://www.bike-discount.de/en/shimano-wh-rs171-700c-disc-wheelset

I am also open for 1x11 or 1x12 combination but this do not look make big difference in weight/cost benefit.
Created sheet with some cost, weight calculations:

Would personally go for a push fit bb to avoid bonding issues with the t47 shell.

What kind of bonding issues you think?

Bonding issues are a lot more rare than press fit issues.

I'll prefer threaded BB over PF, be it good ol' BSA or T47. I'm seeing a lot of Chiner frames are BSA/T47 now a days (over BB386) from just a year ago and I'm glad.

My biggest issue is to pick proper bottom bracket which will suit that frame with T47 and this crankset

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/shimano-grx-fc-rx600-2x11-speed-crank-46/30

Frame is listed as BBT47 (86.5 mm)

I found something like this:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002440079867.html

But i am not sure.

You have to copy it and paste it in another browser window. Or on mobile press it and use the "open with aliexpress" option.

Ordered today crankset, cassette, front and rear derailleur. Shifters/brakes, wheels and tyres will be available next month...

Recomendations for carbon integrated gravel specific handlebar for around 100 €?

There are few I found out interesting:

I've just finished building up this frame (although it is the Tantan GR048 with integrated cables). The quality of the frame looks good, and the headset area is uniform. The bearings fit securely without being difficult to press in. The frame also looked good on the inside, very smooth with no crinkles visible. Assembly went smoothly, but routing a mechanical groupset through the handlebars would've been a nightmare; even with Di2 it was tight in some spots. The full build with bottle cages, computer mount and pedals is 9.1kg. With a lighter saddle and removing the many heavy screws in the frame, it should go down to around 8.9kg

I've only went on one ride, but first impressions are good. Due to the longer wheelbase, slack steering angle and low BB, it feels very planted and stable on gravel, especially on descends. On the road it almost feels too stable though, coming from a more CX based frame (GR029). Definitely less agile and slower turning. The frame itself feels stiff and efficient, and the handlebars feel much stiffer than my previous Deda Superzero stem.

Minor problem with inserting seat post. Hidden clamp was probably slightly to big. Vendor sent replacement, but meanwhile i striped black colour from it,  and that was enough to insert it.

Stuck at the progress at the moment, because waiting for handlebar...

Can this be verified as true info? I can not find proper info about that. Frame is 86,5 mm and I am installing GRX600 2x10 crankset. I got three shims 1/2/3 mm width
Also ordered specific tool for BB T47, 48,5/49 mm width.

in my direct experience with ultegra crankset and without shims it touch and grinds the BB. with 1mm shim is ok. maybe grx crankset is different. just do a try.
i cant post a pic now, but i can do it later, if you wanna see grinded nds crankarm and bb :'(

The seat post clamp that came with my frame was poorly finished, and the curvature didn't match the seat post. As a result, the sides have dug into the carbon post and cracked it after only a few hours on the bike. As you can see in the image, there's a big gap between post and wedge.

I've messaged TanTan, but haven't received a reply yet. I've sanded it down to match the diameter, hopefully it works now; the seat post has to be replaced though.

I finished my bike and made some 20 km but there is a problem:

Everything is properly tightened but it is not ok to have such play/woble on bottom bracket.

From what I can see, it looks like the BB is not moving in the frame, so it could be a problem with the bearings maybe?

Edit: just remove the crank and look what is causing this problem. With this kind of movement it should be obvious where the problem is.

I do not understand what do you mean BB is not moving in the frame. BB is tightened. Bearings move. I have removed crank and spindle of crankset have to much play inside BB. Means tolerance on BB is fucked up. I contacted seller but they refuse to warranty that since several month passed from delivery.
I will order new one but avoid Kactus BB cause they are no good.

If you can, just get a BB from a decent brand and not from Ali. My experience with Ali bb's has not been great and I will use Shimano from now on where I can.

I installed this
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003015711873.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.68bf1802WVtcti

This fits GRX600 tight as should. Also do not need 1 mm shim.
