29er / Re: Buyer BEWARE: Hongfu bikes
« on: July 31, 2018, 12:02:01 PM »
Been following this thread for a little bit and have a few thoughts:

1) It does take a bit of time to understand what is going on with these Chiner frames.
2) Yes, even though most all have photos of their "factory" on their sites, most are just sellers and do not produce the frames. Understand that!
3) Most frames are not kept in stock, they are made to order. No one wants to stock inventory. If they were in stock it should only take 1-2 days before shipping (other than paint) If it takes a few weeks for them to "ship" your frame then it wasn't built to begin with.
4) It seems as though in this case they are trying to recover $170.00 for the build cost of the frame that was started even though the order was canceled. I'm not saying who is right or who is wrong in this situation but it's understandable as to why they want to keep $170.00
4) If someone is thinking about a Chiner frame please do not "need" it in a certain time frame. It's going to take a while for it to finally show up at your door. Just know that up front.
5) For any of the Chiner sellers reading this, please be open to honest and timely communication. It will help from receiving negative feedback from buyers. After all people WILL talk  ;)

29er / Re: 29er frame dropout size issues
« on: July 05, 2018, 12:53:00 PM »
When i put my M06 together i did have a little play between the axle and the dropouts. Maybe 2-3 mm at the most. What you are dealing with is way too much play. I don't believe it is a 148 boost triangle. It's most likely a 142 triangle with too much clearance  :-X

As was suggested, can you get everything to tighten up? If so you might want to use it that way and inform the seller that if you have any issues what so ever, the triangle is going back to them foc!!! Make sure you document any communication with them!

Good deals for sure but none of them are $2800.00 bikes.

You're talking about XC racers. Yes most are still using 100mm bikes but with much slacker head tubes. Nino's Scott has a 68.5 degree head tube angle and a stand up 73.8 degree seat tube. Most pleasure riders that are buying chiner bikes are buying "trail" bikes. A little more travel and slacker frames. That's what's trending. I started on XC hardtail bikes and now I rider harder than ever on slacker more travel trail bikes. My M06 is probably the best bike i've been on and that's me being a fan of and have ridden on Pivot Cycles. Times and geometries have changed...........

Also XC frames with 100mm of travel are becoming less popular so 1-2 year old XC frames are discounted quite a bit.

It is a very tough question to answer. Yes, Competitive Cyclist does have specials on Yeti frames but mostly XC frames. I was thinking about getting an ASR-c but they are out of my size. Not sure you would want a short travel frame giving where you live.

As far as reliability goes, i'm on my second Chiner frame and haven't broken any of them. Granted i'm not racing but i'm pretty hard on my M06. Not sure what's going on with charlesrg but he seems to be breaking frames left and right  :-\  This weekend i'm taking my M06 to some lift serviced trails and am going to ride hard and jump a bit too. We'll see how it makes it through.

As far as price goes i'm into my M06 build for $2850.00 and that's with all new parts. I'm running Shimano XTR rear gear with Raceface carbon crank and cockpit. X-Fusion Slide fork with X-Fusion shock. I had both pieces custom tailored for me and my bike for maybe $100.00. I bought a carbon set of rims from Yishun and absolutely love them!!! 27mm inside width perfect for 2.35 Maxxis Forecasters.

So, you can build what you want for your price point you just need to make sure you get a frame that's good for your riding environment and shop around a bit for parts. Personally i wouldn't be afraid of a Chiner frames. Like I said before, i'm not sure what's going on with charlesrg and why he is breaking frames. We'll have to see if his seller ponies up and honors his warranty. My buddy is a huge Cannondale fan and he has cracked one road frame and broken two mtb frames, none of them from crashing. Carbon is carbon, it's always subject to breaking. Riding a name brand frame doesn't guarantee it won't fail.  I guess the question is can you get replacement under warranty if it does? That why i feel it's important to be choosy who you buy your Chiner frame from. I only purchase from sellers i know and have have researched their responsiveness to those that have had issues.

That's good to know. If you received a brand new frame would you recommend applying locktite to every link/screw/bolt before starting a build?

I know i did with my M06. I didn't trust anything to the manufacturer so when my frame came i completely took it all apart, inspected it and put it all back together with locktite and proper torque. It's been flawless ever since  ;D

Yes!!! Still love the bike  ;D It's been a very rainy spring here in North Carolina so i put a pair of the new Maxxis Forcaster 2.35 tires on it. Really like the way these handle. They grip even better than the Ardent Race that i was riding on. Even though they are more knobby they still feel just as fast to me on the trail. You can tell they're a bit slower on tarmac but i rarely ride on tarmac, mostly single track. They grip very well in the berms. I weigh 190lbs and run 24lbs in the front and 26lbs in the rear.

No issue with pivot points loosening up. All the bearings are tight and smooth. Took a little bit to get used to the slacker headtube but now that it's natural to me i would never want to go back to a more upright angle. In the next few weeks i'm going to be bringing the bike to some downhill parks and i can give you all a review on how it handles on "downhill" conditions!

A couple of things about my bike. I have been riding it for about a year now. Best mtb bike i have ever owned! I am using an X-Fusion O2 RLR shock and in the beginning i wasn't sure the tune was correct for the bike. I sent the shock out to MAD Racing in Reno NV. They have been great to deal with, can't say enough good things about them!!! Gave Mike all my information, sent him drawings of the bike and i have to say, other than pressure, i haven't touched anything on the shock since. Feels great and i am using the whole amount of travel without ever bottoming out. I will say on the bigger drops and hits i can feel the seatstays flex. They're supposed to do that, it's part of the suspension package. I'm sure you are feeling it too. Might be why you feel the ratio is more linear than the drawings suggests.

I must have drawn the frame at least 10 times before i felt i had it right. Now, i'm using an oval chainring so it always feels like the suspension is bobbing but when i set the oring position at where i'm pedaling (on a flat road) the oring doesn't move at all. Maybe using a  GoPro will help to visualize what's going on back there. I think a lot is made of suspension bobbing and how detrimental it is to performance and efficiency. I used to be a big believer of that but now i concentrate more on how it puts the power to the rear wheel. On a mtb you are constantly flexing, moving, changing your seat position front and aft and i don't feel any of these conditions are effected by bobb. If you ride out west where you have long flat climbs straight pedaling might be effected but on single track where the riding surface is constantly changing i don't feel bobb comes into play at all. My M06 accelerates really well, puts the power to the rear tire extremely well and climbs technical climbs like a goat. Yes, other frames might show better specs but to me it's more about how the bike feels underneath you that counts  :)

29er / Re: New Hong Fu FM058 build
« on: April 19, 2018, 11:57:22 AM »

I did read something about the M06 having a bit of play in the rear end, which worried me.  Having said that, I am little worried about some play developing on my FM058, as the hole in rocker where the top shock bolt passes through might enlarge, causing some play.  Gonna ask Hong fu if I can get some spare rocker links.

The play you are referring to is not from wear. It's that way from the build. I have that "play" in my bike (M06) same as what you described, the top shock mounting hole on the rocker is just a little too big for the bolt. You can barely notice it. Only when you're off the bike and pick it up by hand you can hear a little click. I would not be concerned about yours getting worse. I've been riding mine for about a year and it has not gotten worse.

Nice build! Good luck with it this weekend. Give us a report about what you think of the ride.

For what it's worth: I have a M06 and there is no issue with the rear triangle support hitting the seat tube. With the shock fully bottomed out it's not even remotely close to hitting. I have read the thread from the French forum too and have no idea what was happening there. Maybe a design change was made before i received mine??? I purchased my frame last summer so new frames definitely will not have a clearance issue.

29er / Re: FM026 FS frame by Dengfu

The FM026 is just the boost version of the M06. When i ordered my M06 last year they told me they were working on a boost version but i didn't want to wait. The only difference is the rear triangle is wider for boost axles. Great bike! I love mine  ;D

Great looking bike!!!

I have about a year on mine now and i can say i love the geometry. Yes, i'm using a 120mm fork and don't feel it has slowed me down at all. My area has a lot of ups and downs, especially gullies leading into creeks, and i feel the extra slack in the head tube angle has helped. I too had thought about dropping mine to 100mm but now that i'm used to what i have i feel no need to do it. I don't feel it will make me any faster. If anything i feel the 120mm makes me safer, if that makes sense.

I was one who started out of a FS bike. Then i decided to try a HT because i thought is would faster and more efficient. I was right, but only to a certain extent. My HT is a CS-057 and i love the bike! It does everything except for keeping traction on rooty or uneven terrain. I ride mostly single track and over the last few years trails have become very rooty and uneven. So i decided to build a FS, mostly because i wanted to build a new bike, and built a M06 FS. Wow, what a bike! It does everything as well if not better than the HT. And it grips on roots and uneven terrain like nobodies business!!! Needless to say i'll never go back to a HT again. Not that's there anything wrong with a HT. I heard all the stories about the HT would beat up my back but honestly i never experienced any of that. With the FS i find i can keep my pedaling cadence in what ever the trails has to throw at me which, in the long run, improves my times and keeps me more efficient over the "faster" HT. Makes sense???
