Component Deals & Selection / Re: Chinese cycling clothes
« on: March 28, 2021, 05:28:59 PM »
I got some custom jerseys from this store several years ago...
https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32696058478.html

Came out pretty well and seem well made.

They made an initial draft of the design based off MS paint drawing and logo pictures but I wasn't quite a fan of the original mock up so I ended up designing the jersey myself (they sent me their template and I did the rest in GIMP) and they made it pretty much spot on using my design. 10/10 would recommend, also their sizing runs tight.

They did bike pants and other clothing too. I got some polyester TShirts made as well.

Think jerseys ended up being almost $30 each?

I got Cree Lights as well from China.

Also my brother and I picked up a pair of carbon fiber kayak paddles for racing from alibaba...
similar to these ( http://www.epickayaks.com/product/product/epic-mid-wing )

I still haven't pulled trigger on my IP-036 (or I guess now my CS-036!) due to continuing to be cautious on large-ish purchases of the "want" instead of "need" variety.

After The Ride / Re: What are your other interest?
« on: July 12, 2015, 12:41:11 AM »
I snowboard in the winter.
Orienteer/adventure race in the other seasons (which is my reason to mountain bike).

I used to rockclimb indoors a lot but stopped between tearing my labrum and moved to NYC (Jersey City) where there's no great options nearby to head to on weekdays (also they're f'ing expensive up here). NYC Metro area also hurts me for my mtbing takes a while to get to nearby trails and I don't have my friends to ride with anymore.

Flyboarding looks awesome.
I want to get into speed-flying, i tell everyone that's how I plan to die. ( )

Had some unexpected expenses, held off but going to start sourcing parts soon. Sadly won't have bike ready for some of my earlier races at this point.

Reverted to waffling between running my lefty max at 110-120mm or selling it to pick up a fox float 120 ctd with remote.

Hopefully have good news soon.

Still running the old prophet a bit longer.

Any update as to the quality of those rotors?

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2013-NEW-red-full-carbon-fibre-bike-bicycle-MTB-Handlebar-seatpost-stem-top-cap-washer/1458357729.html

Any reason to think the bar/post/stem in the above link is subpar quality. Looks like a great price for a carbon bundle.

Also looking forward to details

Anyone know if this is a particularly good price on this fork?

Also for the IP-036 with a L or XL frame 100mm or 120mm appropriate?

Cyclocross bikes generally not allowed in these races. Although could probably get away with it. I'll look into rigid fork... Really don't know much about them.

Also there is some merit to suspension and the 29 make for a more comfortable experience if you're going to be out on the course for 12-24+ hours. I know there's times I'm glad for the suspension. Although I have and will continue to run semi-slicks/cyclocross style tires instead of the knobbys if I suspect very tame terrain and roads (I.e. an event in Delaware no where near White Clay).

29er / Looking for advice on build.
« on: February 16, 2015, 11:20:35 PM »
Have been away a while and lurking recently again. Did a bunch a research a while back when my bikes direct bike HT was stolen. Picked up a used cannondale prophet FS 26er to race on in the meanwhile.

I'm getting back to the desire to build a bike instead of pick up another used or bikes direct bike.

Never really solicited crowd advice yet, curious what y'all think.

My background:
My primary bike use is adventure racing (or bike orienteering) which tends to have lots of road riding and usually less technical mtb terrain. I mean it is really not fun hauling 30+lbs of Cannondale prophet with a full race pack up the side of a mountain. My only other use is training for races and sometimes I join the roadies on my MTB for long rides instead of using my old trek road bike.

Id consider myself an early intermediate mountain biker who is willing to be ballsy come race day... Or if biking at night (always love doing things at night I wouldn't do during the day!) Anyway if stuff gets too steep/ hairy I'm walking. But been getting better over time.

I'm guessing light weight and road efficient is probably my number one priority while being technically capable.
Oh and some nice big disc rotors... Had run in with brake fade while trying keep my bike under 60mph on a very steep long mountain road on a mcguyverly repaired tubeless tire that delaminated, bubbled and exploded on me leaving me a tennis ball sized shredded area.  Long story short I'd like to try to reduce having to worry about brake fade again if it makes sense.

I'm trying to keep the build around 2k give or take a few hundred and will be selling the prophet to help fund the new bike (which is sad since the FS was fun to ride, definitely made things a bit easier too)

So suggestions? I'm thinking HT 29 spending the money on the rims and frame with moderate components otherwise and a lockout fork. Imagine a FS with lockouts on both rear and front might be out of my budget... and maybe even counter intuitive to meet my needs.

Not in a rush as I still have the prophet so I will try to snipe good deal on the components but I'd like to try to get the ball rolling soon. Really appreciate any advice!

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Bike lights
« on: October 07, 2014, 08:36:21 PM »
Quoting from my other thread. I do adventure races using these puppies on my bike handlebars and helmet. Easy to take them off the bike and carry by hand if you have to drop the bike and go hiking through the woods.

Also generally there is a statement about being  careful with Chinese Li-Ion Batteries that I want to restate, often they can be refurbished cells and bad cells at that that often do not match the advertised mAH. Eitherway bad batteries can explode while charging. Be careful.

Figured I'd share my night-time trail riding lights:

3 or 4 of these puppies
http://www.lightmalls.com/cree-xm-l2-led-flashlight

...mount 1 or 2 to handlebars and 1 or 2 helmet using two fish blocks:
http://www.amazon.com/Two-Fish-Unlimited-Block-Holder/dp/B001F307JK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1405043881&sr=8-3&keywords=twofish+lock
http://www.amazon.com/Two-Fish-Unlimited-Flashlite-Holder/dp/B001CJXB5E/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1405043906&sr=1-3&keywords=two+fish+blocks

Just be sure to order legit batteries. Lots of stories of people buying the Li-on batteries from china and them being defective (read: dangerous/exploding)

Each flashlight is obscenely powerful and lasts 2~3 hours on high or  5~7 on medium (medium is still obscenely powerful).

I carry a back up batteries too.

Can get 4 flashlights, 4 mounts and 8 batteries for something like $125 definitely more than enough light.

I like to ride with 2 wider head flashlights on the handlebars for the dispersion and the skinner lense head on my helmet for more focused light where I'm looking.

Edit-
These batteries are what I purchased as well as my brother and have been satisfied with them.
Not as cheap as some batteries you find online but well reviewed to be safe and have the listed charge capacity (which is about as much charge as you can expect a 18650 battery to hold).
