Re: Frame suggestion Hi guys,

Would also like some recommendations on frames if possible? OP, hope this is okay!!

I average around 800km's per month with most rides being between 1 hour to 2 hours (30km to 60km's), with a 3 hour+ ride thrown in when time permits. I'm based in Amsterdam so all of my rides are flat with little to no elevation change and are done solo.

I don't race and my only real goal is to try and increase my avg. speed from around 31km/h to 35km/h. so I can go further in my 1 to 2 hour riding window.

I'm 170cm tall, weigh about 67kg and ride a Triban RC 520 in size Small https://www.decathlon.com/collections/road-bikes/products/road-bike-disc-105-rc-520?

So far I've upgraded the wheels to some 50mm Farsports carbon rims and changed the seat post for a 0mm offset carbon version with carbon seat. This has reduced the weight from around 10.5kg's to 9.1kg's, and I'll be transfering as many parts as possible from my current bike to the new frame.

I'm curently looking at a few frames from VeloBuild (VB-R-099, VB-R-168 and VB-R-177) as they seem to have a good reputation for build quality, customer service and price point and it would be great to get some thoughts on which frame and size may suit me best, or if there are any alternative recommendations.

A geo comparisson of these frames vs what I currently have is here: https://geometrygeeks.bike/compare/triban-rc520-2019-s,velobuild-2020-vb-r-099-2020-49,velobuild-2020-vb-r-099-2020-52,velobuild-vb-r-168-2021-49,velobuild-vb-r-168-2021-52,velobuild-vb-r-177-2021-xs,velobuild-vb-r-177-2021-s

Looking at the numbers, the VB-R-099 in 49cm size seems to be a best match with a slightly lower stack (expected as it's aero vs endurance geo), and shorter reach. The shorter reach of the VB-R-099 is offset by the fact the shortest stem option that comes with the frame is 90mm vs my current 80mm stem. The proprietary bars seem to have a forward sweep that further increases the reach, and the proprietary seatpost also has a 20mm offset.

My ideal choice would be the VB-R-168 but would like to be able to run a standard bar, stem and seat post which would help with bike fit and replacement parts if needed, however this doesn't seem to be an option.

Anyway, very long post but would be great to get thoughts :)

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Had confirmation from Chris this morning that the Chameleon paint colours are indeed pre-mixed and cannot be customised in the way I wanted. They are only available in Green, Red, Blue and Purple.

I'm a bit stumped with what I'd like now and might go the complete other end of the spectrum, and just get raw carbon with a high gloss clear coat like the Cervelo example below. Would expect this to also be a few grams lighter than a painted frame  ::)

I don't know about the decals, I explicitly asked to only follow the color scheme and not add the decals as I don't want it to be a fake s-works.

For the decals, I think it's just a flat fee of $30. I have only asked for 1x small sticker near the head tube and also paid $30.

Re: Delihea Tank I have no personal experience but from reading through the forums I've heard good things about the Delihea brand (not specifically the Tank model).

Looking at the geo, it's almost identical to the VeloBuild VB-R-168, which in turn is almost identical to the Specialized Tarmac SL7.

Visually it looks like they've trimmed the frame down and have gone for lower weight vs more of an aero tube set but have kept the same geo.

If the weights listed on the AliExpress page are correct then the frame weight of the Tank is very close to the Tarmac SL7, with a difference of around 50g only which I very much doubt most people would notice. It would also make the frame around 150g lighter than the VeloBuild VB-R-168.

You can compare the geo of the three frames above here: https://geometrygeeks.bike/compare/velobuild-vb-r-168-2021-52,delihea-tank-machine-2021-52,specialized-tarmac-sl7-2021-52/

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Hey guys, quick update on my build, which I hope might help who still need to start:

After managing the internal routing, I realised that I couldn't eliminate the headset play without locking the steering. After quite a few trials, I realised that the problem could be that the compression ring that sits above the top bearing, is sitting too low for the dust cover to compress it down once the top cap is tightened, which result in the dust cover pushing on the frame instead of the headset (as it has downward lip), while pulling up the fork excessively. As I put some cardboard/plastic strips on top of the compression ring as spacers (didn't have nothing better on hand), it seems fine, although some paint paid the price while figuring this out.

Obvs is not a solution but I intend to redo the wiring in a few weeks, once I remove the spacers and re-cut the fork, so i'll fix all that at once with some spacer-half-ring or something. Maybe a 1-2mm extra height in the top bearing could do, need to do some research on that. If anyone has ideas, fire away ;D

Hope it helps if anyone has/will have the same issue ;)

Some of these would probably help: https://www.bike-components.de/en/FSA/Micro-Spacer-for-Integrated-Headsets-p7698/?o=300069-silver-1-1-8-&delivery_country=NL&gclid=CjwKCAjwjJmIBhA4EiwAQdCbxphutMOEaE4FZdwqrjjwKWg_931LSH2cvdmBo4OMPOphM-T1k8En_hoCA6oQAvD_BwE

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame I've just received confirmation from Melody at Dengfu that that bars and headset spacers are only compatible with the Dengfu R12 frame so that doesn't look to be an option any more.

I can see that the Elves Orome Aeropro bar (https://store.elvesbike.com/products/elves-aeroelite-one-piece-road-carbon-handlebar) can be supplied with 'generic' headset spacers (HPS03 spacers) that are designed to be used on round head tubes with a 52mm OD bearing / 52mm OD head tube.

Does anyone with a 168 know if these dimensions are the same as the frame?

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Hi,

With the integrated handlebar,  which phone support do you use ? ? ?

I'd like to have a garmin like mount  in order to use my 6 inch  phone. and the support
I currently use cannot be installed on the integrated handlebar

The one I currently use is this one.  So I basically glue a garmin adaptor to my phone case in order to use that support

You'll need something like this:

It looks like it actually comes with a proper phone clip so as long as you also have a compatible phone case it should be nice and secure!

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame Took delivery of my frame today, very impressed with the initial inspection!

To begin with, the packaging was fantastic. The outer cardboard box was largely intact with only 1 small rip, it was nowhere near the frame internally so I had no concerns.

The frame etc. was then completely wrapped in bubble wrap and foam so arrived with zero damage.

The carbon then looks great on the frame, forks, bars and seat post, and the custom paint (Purple Chameleon fading down to Gloss Black) along with the custom decals is exactly as I requested.

I'll do a more thorough inspection once I have a bit more time but so far so good!

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
hope you will be able to correcct it !

the BB press fit is the main reason i am still hesitating to buy this frame !!!
Threaded is so simple are full proof

Just get one of these, it's a BB86 press fit bottom bracket, however the BB shell threads into itself, so works in the same way as a normal threaded BB. Problem solved.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
Hi,
Does this frame had a drain hole at the bottom of the bottom bracket to let water drain ?
On the pictures of velobuild website, I dont see any hole in the close up picture of the BB hole .

Tanks

Yep, mine has a small hole drilled in the underside of the bottom bracket.

Re: Velobuild VB-R-168 Frame
I just purchased one of these smaller headset expander plugs in an attempt to save a few grams https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002091371858.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.78e74c4d2cuvam and then noticed that in the info circulating about the upcoming SL7 headset recall, one of the pieces they are going to be providing is a new expander plug.

I know the 168 has a different headset design however is there a reason for concern with these smaller plugs?

https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/specialized-set-to-issue-stop-ride-and-recall-on-tarmac-sl7/

I'm all for losing weight and am trying to do it as much as possible with my 168, however there is no way I'd trust such a small and light expander on a carbon steerer tubed fork, especially for the sake of 30g of weight saving.

There's no science behind this and its my opinion only, however I'd put the longer, stock expander back in if only for peace of mind.
