Title: Chiner Maintenance Thread
Post by: Carbon_Dude on June 08, 2014, 09:41:20 AM
Thought I'd start a thread for us all to keep track of any problems, fixes, and general maintenance we are doing.

I'll start:

Frame:  IP-057
Miles: 760
Date: 7-June-2014

Problem:  Started hearing a clunk-clunk when pedaling hard up hill.
Work performed:  Re-torqued and re-greased GXP bottom bracket, crank arms, pedals.  Rebuilt Eggbeater pedals.  Turned out the bottom bracket was not as tight as it should have been, this time I got out the torque wrench and tightened the BB cups to 30 in-lbs.

Problem:  Carbon seatpost creak.
Work performed:  Pulled the seat post, cleaned, and reinstalled.  I do this every 3 months or so.

Did you use carbon paste when reinstalling?

I've read good and bad things about carbon paste.  The grit in the paste can cause some unwanted wear & tear on the post.  I don't run the post dry thought, I apply a very light coating of Park tools polylube.  Helps with creaks.  I'm sure the carbon paste is what I should be using and I've done some research to find out which is the best but have not ordered any yet.

I keep my brakes/shifter somewhat loose in case of a crash. The other day I was adjusting lights on my handlebar and I moved the brake lever a bit harshly causing a scratch on the carbon handlebar. Should I cover it with clear nail polish (ive read that a few times) or just let it be ?
