Component Deals & Selection / Re: Chinese cycling clothes
« on: January 12, 2021, 07:50:35 PM »
I love my Santic, got a couple of bib shorts, a pair of 3/4 padded pants, a pair of baggy shorts and a packable rain jacket from them.

Spakct & Weimostar are also pretty good quality.
Pic below is a Weimostar jersey I own. PhP440 sale price is equivalent to about US$8.60-9.00 (depending on exchange rate). I got it from Lazada, like Ali-Express but handled by a local firm.

Just be aware Chinese clothing usually runs small, so go one or two sizes bigger.

I was wondering, are these still running nicely? I'm potentially interested in an upgrade for my xc bike.

I'm still around 800km and I haven't opened to check them yet. But they are running and still engaging really well.

I have the ZTTO 54T in my gravel and mountain wheels.  1,600 miles on the mountain bike, probably 3,000 miles on the gravel bike.  I've re-greased them and saw no signs of wear and both are running flawlessly.

Wow! Those are great mileages. That gives me a lot of comfort and confidence. I've currently just have them on my mtb but now considering them for my gravel bike as well.

I'd recommend clearance for tire widths to be a few mm wider than your intended tire size. Gives you some room to mount at least fenders plus better mud clearance... even if you don't need them.

Rims, 20-21mm inner is sufficient. I have 2.25 slapped on my DT Swiss XR331 (i20) with no problems.

For my Waltly gravel bike, I had them put racks & fender mounts as I see myself doing some bikepacking. You might consider it if you want.

If you're gonna be on paved road most of the time, perhaps a rigid carbon fork might be more useful. With weight saving bonus.

Didn't know EMS is frozen until Spring but it is true they were down during the height of COVID.  I had to ship my frame via DHL last May 2020. Cost me US$200 as opposed to EMS' US$80, that's within Asia.  And it's another company not Hong Fu. My contact did inform me about the EMS situation and the alternatives beforehand, so I didn't have any surprises.

I just upgraded my DT Swiss 350 boost hub's 18T rachets with ZTTO 54T rachets. The ZTTO's cost me around US$32.60, comes with a pair of 54T rachets & a pair of springs. No special grease. I bought it from Lazada, it's our local equivalent of Ali-Express. Actually a lot of Ali-Express vendors are also there.

For about a third of the DT Swiss upgrade kit... well, we'll know if it's worth it a few months from now. Pics below of weight & some comparisons. Vendor's weight was pegged at 16.5 grams for rachets & springs. My scale showed 18 grams. DT Swiss 18T rachets & springs from my hubs we're 27 grams. 9 grams difference. For pics 4 & 5, I placed the 54T on top of the 18T to see if the 'grooves' aligns. Not perfect but they went in the hubs just fine. The upgrade was quite easy.

I wanted to put a video comparing the sound/noise of 18T & 54T but my cellphone's had problems picking up the sound.

Will update after a hundred kilometers. Oops, I mean after a thousand kilometers.

Regarding the 3M bathroom tape, it comes in 2 varieties, clear & opaque dark gray. You'll want the clear one.

Also, my dropper post protector is D.I.Y. using the same bathroom tape. And I have been using it for close to 3 years already.

I used one of those $1.00 plastic chainstay protector on one bike. On another bike, I use the 3M Anti-Slip bathroom tape. Also used the same tape as my down tube protector.

Congratulations with that beauty!

I don't necessarily find the 'plated' chainstay to be unsightly or 'learn to loved', maybe it needs getting used to. If you want, why not have your name or some art etched into it to make it unique.

Metal Frames / Re: Custom Steel frames, like Waltly does with Titanuim?
« on: October 19, 2020, 02:34:02 AM »
If you want custom steel bike frames, my suggestion is to check your local bike builders. My personal experience is that you don't need to go far for reputable steel frame builders. It'll save you a lot of trouble & additional expenses like international shipping & custom duties/taxes.

But if you really want to pursue that, you can check out Ave Maldea, he's from the Philippines (where I'm from). Very well known & established here, and had done several frames for folks from different countries. He works with hi-tensile & chromoly steel, I believed he had worked with stainless steel as well. Practically a legend to Filipino cyclists. The bad news is he's swamped, like a 2-3 months turnover. And the COVID situation doesn't make it easier. I believe he can do a hi-tensile steel frame for under US$200. Not sure if that includes paint jobs though.

@Jotegr, we tried but it didn't work out, so I went with this instead.

I hope they can do the dropped chainstay. They wouldn't (or couldn't) do an elevated chainstay when I commissioned them to do a copy of the Trek Stache early this year.

I also recently saw that China Cycling video about the Canyon Grail Waltly built. As for your concern, aesthetically, it would depend on the chainring you use. Some CR would pretty much cover that plate and render moot whatever look it would pose. As for is it worth it, how important is speed to you?

Component Deals & Selection / Adoy Rotors
« on: September 30, 2020, 01:46:02 AM »
This ain't what you're thinking.

This is currently going around in some local FB bike groups. I'm not clear with how the story exactly went but the short of it was some guy talking about "adoy" brake rotors to his puzzled friends. Until they finally figured out what brand it was... see picture.

I browsed some of their products and realized they are also Tito Titanium. I have ordered a flat & riser bars from them but the items have yet to arrive. So I can't comment on it yet.
