Re: The Shiny New AM831 Group Buy (A) Thread!
Thank you for the idea! Oneup claims that their 35 mm bar has an oval shape making it confortable like an old 31 mm. Probably it worths the investment; a failure in the handlebar could be an hospital trip.
There are three "levels" of handlebars:
- generic chinese aliexpress, the cheapest but no warranty at all
- chinese reputable brands (og-evkin,ican, lightcarbon); middle price and mostly good reviews
- brand names: most expensive, still made in china but probably with a different quality control that makes a world of difference.
Said that if you search over the web you will find photos of failures of any kind of handlebars (even alluminium ones). For sure they suffer fatigue, after many small hits they get weaker; carbon ones maybe even aging from UV etc.

Probably better to go with 30-35 mm rise and limit the stem spacers, this is my idea what do you think?

That will be exactly how I do it for nothing more than because my steerer is already cut for the same length head tube :)  I agree though, but the disclaimer is to leave your steerer a little longer so you can play with it if you don't like it.
I replaced a 20mm rise AL bar with the Oneup 35mm rise and it feels pretty good.  I prefer a more aggressive position when the saddle is up but it hasn't seemed to cause a negative effect.  This frame will have better geometry so I expect it to get better, some of the Hightowers come with 30 or 35mm rise bars so how bad can it be?

Agree on all counts about bar reliability. I have had aluminum handlebars fail due to my own negligence, get torque wrenches people, and I have been very particular about it ever since.  If I see EWS riders using it I feel comfortable with it.  On the other side, I will buy the well known Chinese brand components for road and gravel since I don't full gorilla those bikes as often.

Re: The Shiny New AM831 Group Buy (A) Thread!
you guys are hilarious.  I have run a carbon bar for 4 years from ali and i weigh 255 lbs and havent had a single problem.  Their products are way better than the majority of you let on.. your brand name crap probably comes from the same factory.

Even from a sample of 1 that is good data, is it a truly off brand or one of the larger manufacturers?
My direct Chinese frame failure rate is pretty high at 20% but they haven't been catastrophic failures.  For 1/4 to 1/3 the price of the name brands I keep coming back for frames but go with big brand components with my "savings."
I like that the big brands publish their failure rates and the Oneup carbon bar is only $129.  Previous to that I was running your average $40-50 alloy bar but I wanted to try something new.  That is peace of mind for me but I recognize that extra $100 over an Ali bar could go to other components for some.

Re: Tideace 2022 29er Boost 12*148mm New Mold MTB029
The geo chart shows fork offset of 45.  Seems like most frames have gone to 51.  Your thoughts?

That is actually the other way around.  51mm has been the mainstay for a long time and many now are going 46,44, or even 42mm.

Have you tried such bearings already? I've read pretty bad reviews saying that they started rattling after a while.

You really have to make sure you use the right axle.  They come with three different sizes and if you go with one that is too loose it will start to wear fast.  Grease them up when you service the shock and check if the larger axle(s) fit, it isn't that bad but you can make a mess if you use a standard bushing removal tool. Roller bearings are a more robust solution but I haven't found any smaller than 30mm.

If you're not one to tear the bike down and grease pivots and bearings every year then it might be safer to stick to bushings.

Got my moss green medium today. I'll post some pics and weight tomorrow. Ordered a DT Swiss F535 160 to go up front. Missing a few small things, but will get started on the build.

We need some build threads, break up the P9 monotony...

Re: The Shiny New AM831 Group Buy (A) Thread!
Isn't the hole in the bushings supposed to be approx 12.7mm? And with the bushings removed and just the eyelet, it's a 15mm hole? To go from 12.5 to 12.7 with bushing removed, the bushing would only be 0.1mm thick...

DU bushings are thin.  Some photo for reference.

Hey guys, curious to know, how long did it take for your to get a tracking number after paying for your frame?

Thanks,

I ordered after the first group buy, but before the second, on August 8th.  Custom single paint color size M, was recently told it was in paint, or queue for paint, and hasn't shipped yet.  If I get it under two months for ordering I will consider that a win.  Raw carbon or stock color and I probably would have it, or at least a shipping number, by now.

Can someone post the exact specs for a crown race spacer that worked for them?

Currently available options that will work without a special bearing:
3mm race
https://canecreek.com/product/3mm-52-40mm-alloy-crown-race-baa0855k/
6mm race
https://canecreek.com/product/6mm-52-40mm-alloy-crown-race-baa1078k/
10mm -0.5 degree race
https://reverse-components.com/en/products/05%C2%B0-angle-spacer-tapered-forks

Alternatively, use a downtube protector as a bump stop :) :

Specialized used to make a tall race for stumpjumpers and I think Hope and Chris King had some sort of race spacer available.  Not sure if any of those wold work right without a specific headset lower to match.  Anyway, don't have the frame yet but just throwing out the available offerings.  There are probably others available on Ali or Amazon but for under $20 USD I picked up the 3mm Cane Creek to match the headset.  I'll just add the downtube protector if it still hits, I'm not planning on doing bar spins and I move the back end on tight turns and switchbacks.

The original SC solution doesn't look that efficient either...

Someone made a 3d print that was wider and longer but is only really practical when screwed in.  I'm not brave enough to rivnut the seat tube, or anywhere on these frames really, to get a little sample fender.  I bodged up a version without the screw holes that could be attached with double sided tape but it is heavy.  The original - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4853311

Other than looking like a SC this frame has nearly nothing in common with any model.  That said though I do think the muckshield made for the Tallboy/Hightower/Megatower would fit and be pretty neat.  The M5 version isn't available yet but I think a crafty person can work out how to make something similar.
