Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Re: Miracle Cycling
« on: April 10, 2021, 05:45:40 PM »
I have a friend that ordered his and hers full suspension frames and a pair of gravel frames. He was happy with them. He used to build carbon frames and also repair them and liked the carbon so I value his opinion.

On his recommendation another friend set up a business account with them to build store brand bikes for his bike shop. So far he's been happy with them.

Fat Bikes / Re: Modern geo. Fat frame?
« on: February 06, 2021, 10:18:00 PM »
Hi there, Is there a recommendation for a carbon frame that has reasonable Geo. I am looking to build a Rigid fat bike.
Is the LC613 worth considering?

https://www.lightcarbon.com/lightcarbon-full-carbon-26-fatbike-frameset-with-carbon-fork_p43.html

Thanks
I noticed it says Max chainring is 30T. I run 32T oval so it wouldn't work for me.

I think XM Carbon speed was the place to go. Then Peter shut down to try his hand at crypto currency. I think he's back in business but that would worry me for future support. I'm pretty sure TanTan bought rights to use that mold.

The rockshox SID cable pull is 10mm.
What is the cable pull of the Fox Nude shock (12-13mm I guess) ? Do you have a "free stroke" on the fork cable on the first 2-3mm ?
How does it feel and perform ?

Thank you very much

Cable pull is very close between both. I leave a little slack in the fork cable when shock is open. With the remote in the middle position the fork seems to be open. Then at lockout both shock and fork lock out. Overall it seems to work. I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a 2 position fork to work with the 3 position shock and remote but it works just fine.

Little update of the building process.
Last components will arrive this week, and I will be able to mount the wheels and finish the assembly.

Is that a DIY kydex downtube protector or did you find something that fits well? I tried making a kydex but it didn't form well and looked like garbage. Still trying to figure something out. A giant Trance X has a rubbery one I'd love to get my hands on but no luck so far

Balls,

Seems neither fox or rockshox make a remote operated shock available after market in a 165x40 ( that i can find for sale).

Would love to know what remote operated shocks others here are using!

I can find a fox DPS in 165x38 or 165x45. Rockshox are being twatts and only provinding their remote operated 165x40 shocks to bike manufacturers as OEM and cant even tell me which brands use that size shock so i cant even order a "replacement" though one of them.

A fox DPS shock has the same length shaft for 165x40, 42.5, and 45. Just need to add travel limiting spacer when doing a rebuild. As long as it's just the seals that are bad you could buy a blown shock and have it shortened when they rebuild it. Might be able to get it tuned different and/or get it switched from lever to remote actuated too.

Manitou Mara is very similar to the Manitou McCleod so I think I read you could switch it to remote using McCleod parts. I think it's 22mm cable pull from open to close. I think it's pull to lock. Just make sure if you're loving your fork it works the same way

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Best sub $400 carbon 29er wheels
« on: December 08, 2020, 07:11:12 PM »

Does anybody have any experience with LightCarbon wheels on a mountain bike ? I see plenty of posts about road wheels.

They have quoted me $499 for the DT350-AD930-XC-RACE before shipping. https://www.lightcarbon.com/mountain-bike-29er-asymmetry-design-mtb-carbon-rims_p75.html

Presume these are the DT Swiss hubs, although the site just says DT350 ?

- DT350S MTB boost hubs (15*110/12*148mm)
- Sapim Race spokes (28)
- Asymmetric design MTB carbon rims, tubeless ready

The only thing that concerns me is the inner bead width of 25mm which seems narrow to me?
And it specifies the max tire size as 2.4” - I run 2.5” on the front?

I bought a set of their carbon fat rims last year and laced them myself. So far I like them. I only use them in winter and haven't taken them on any drop more than 1-2 feet. I saved some weight over my old mulefut wheels. Plus no more having to mess with rim strips and pin joints/holes for tubeless setup.

Are you happy with the combo Mezcal/Barzo?
Do you ride with them in the mud sometimes?
I ride with Barzo for a year now, and found them much more grippy and equally rolling than Rocket Ron's.

I am happy so far with the Barzo/Mezcal.  I don't get a chance to ride mud.  With the way our soil is, they close our trails when it's too wet and open up once  they are dry otherwise the trail surface gets damaged and then holds more water the next time it rains.  The closest thing I get to mud is when the top is a little greasy sometimes.  There was one night last fall when it was greasy that I crashed twice in corners when my wheel(s) slid out.  One time was on a root I think and the other I was just pushing too hard for conditions.

Now that someone got one I'll spill the beans on mine. In a round about way I was able to get one earlier this year. I wish I was able to get the gloss black like Robin but had to settle for matte black. I have 1490 miles on it so far. I got the medium. I'm about 5'8.5" ( wingspan of 6 ft). I might have been able to get a large but I wasn't sure if the seatpost would be too long to run a dropper. I'm running 740mm bars and an 80mm -6 degree stem. I wish it had a little longer reach. Height wise I'm right on the edge between a medium and large and I have a long reach as stated above. But a frame with long reach is no good if the standover is too high for my legs

I built it up around a 120mm Sid Ultimate. It's last year's with the 32mm stanchion. The shock is a 165x45 fox nude from a 2017 Scott Spark 920. The rest of the components were budget buys.

Drivetrain:sram gx eagle
Crank: raceface affect
BB: wheels MFG thread together
Brakes: Shimano deore xt
Rotors: Shimano rt66
Bars: yeti carbon
Wheels: Mercury EnduroX3
Tires: Vittoria Barzo-front, Mezcal-rear, both 29x2.3
Dropper: OneUp V2 120mm
Seat: Specialized Power Arc expert
Dropper remote: Wolftooth barcentric
Suspension remote: Scott twinloc
I forgot to weigh the frame before I built it up. I think it sits about 26lbs without pedals.

So far I like it.  It pedals pretty good. I wish the bottom bracket was higher because I get some pedal strikes. I have it set up with about 10mm of sag on the shock so I probably can't get it much higher.  I spend most time with it in the middle shock position so 80mm travel. Not much pedal bob when I'm pedaling normal. Standing up and mashing there is some. I lock out the shock and fork on flats or smooth climbs when possible. I'll open it up for full ~115mm rear travel on rough stuff and when taking larger jumps and drops.

It's my first carbon frame. It feels pretty stiff but I'm only 142lbs so I'm light. I took it all apart when I got it and packed grease in all the bearings and then torqued everything to spec with blue loctite. I have a creak that I think is dirt in the seatpost otherwise the suspension is quiet. I bent a derailleur hanger when I crashed and then broke it when trying to straighten it. I had 1 extra so I ordered a couple more. I sheared the head off a suspension bolt somewhere around 800 miles so I ordered backup hardware.

Ok, so my first choice the ICAN S8 is no longer available, so I’m on to the Light carbon LCFS911 and the Carbonda FM936. Either one I have to buy a trunnion mount rear shock. Was hoping to use my eyelet mount shock but alas it looks like this is unreliable.

Leaning towards the fm936 because of the extensive first hand positive experiences here. Looking at the normal weight frame i.e. non super light, but it only comes with a bsa73 bottom bracket. I absolutely can’t be buying a new crank spindle for this so the question is will my existing nx sram crank work with the bsa bb from a overall width perspective. I realize I need a 24/22 diameter bearing set.

My nx crank is currently in a 92 gxp mtn press fit bb - my concern is that the bsa 73 bbs have screw caps on each side that stick out from the frame - will the spindle be long enough ?

Also does anybody have any comments on the durability of the Carbonda paint ?

You can get machined adapters to use a regular shock in a trunnion frame. I know first hand lightcarbon ships the 911 with spacers to run an eyelet shock. Someone here in the USA makes them but the name escapes me

You're talking about the Hongfu I guess ? Indeed BB height was low but similar to Scott Spark.
For the LCFS917, I just add its geometry in "geometrygeeks.bike" and compared to Trail bikes in 120mm (Oiz TR, Epic Evo, Spark 120) its BB is higher than these ones, that are also mounted in 100/100 setup, so not a problem in my opinion for LCFS917.

Remind me to answer once you have your frame in hand

Might be a dumbass question, but if i buy a Fox DPS 165x45, i can insert one of these and then i have a 165x42.5, right?

To reduce the travel of a Fox I'm pretty sure you need to do a full rebuild to get the travel limiting spacer in there.  I had asked about doing the same thing to a Fox Nude shock off a Scott Spark and I was told it can only be done with a full rebuild. I know the Nude is a little different but I think the travel limiting is the same.

The hongfu FM258 was really cool, but without trunnion mount and geometry is less modern as two others.
I find the Carbonda a little to extreme, so this LightCarbon is a really good compromise for me.
I stumbled across the photo of this bike which I really liked (I'm not talking about paintjob...), and after a lot of research I discovered that it was about this frame. It is therefore mounted in 100/100 and that does not seem to degrade the geometry.

Even set up 120/120 the bottom bracket is pretty low and I get pedal strikes.  I would think going 100/100 would make it worse.  If you go 100/100 I would recommend going with a 165mm or 170mm crank.  If you want low travel maybe run 100mm rear and 120mm up front to keep the bottom bracket higher

You mean, it might be possible to change between Lever and Remote? Would be nice indeed.

I saw on Sram website that the RS Deluxe Ultimate Remote has 165x42.5 in it's size listing. So i E-Mailed to a few Bike Stores, asking if they can order it. We'll see...
Otherwise i'll take that Fox one and wait until your prognosis gets real  ;D

Has anyone tried the new Manitou Mara? You can get both 160x40 and 160x45. I'm guessing with some shims or spacers you could get 42.5. it's also very similar to the mccleod and should be able to put a remote on it

I followed a link in the LCFS947 thread and ended up at some site in the Netherlands. LCFS917 looks to be available there. Jmcarbonframe.nl

I have to say I do like the lines of this frame. The ride is fantastic, too.

I don't know if I've asked you specifically. I've asked all over and lost track. What are you using for a downtube protector?
