I have been researching on this forum for a while and have finally pulled the trigger. I purchased a .057 from Peter and should have it early June.
I ordered all the necessary parts from him and the rest of the build from Merlin. Maybe I could have saved a bit if I shopped around more but Merlin's prices seemed great and I like getting it all from as few vendors as possible.
Unfortunately (from a cost aspect) I have no other parts I can re-use for this build so everything will be brand new. The total build will be under $2500.
All carbon bits will be 3K gloss.
The thing that finally made me place the order... I emailed my accountant and asked him "If I build a bike and put my company logo on it, can I write it off?". His reply "Absolutely." Boom, order placed!

Congrats, I know you will be happy with your purchase, 3K glossy was my choice as well. I also did a custom paint scheme as well. Did you go 1x11? What fork did you choose?

Yeah, that's right. Was thinking I paid $495 and $50 shipping/fees.. but it's $395 with almost $150 shipping/fees. If only shipping were $50.. That'd be great.

That's why it's cheapest to get more than just the frame from China. Bars, headset, axle, seatpost, stem, etc., doesn't add that much more to the shipping cost.

All of a sudden this "Craig"'s build is so much more interesting to me. ;D Where you building it? Need access to a nice shop that just needs a bit of cleaning but is staffed by a dickhead with decent skills and good beers? :D

Thanks Chris. I've got almost everything I need here. Marty's got the 1 tool I need so as long as his ears have stopped ringing from exploding a tire with too much pressure (Stans everywhere; face, clothes, walls etc) :o I should be good to go.

Very nice! I have been happy with my XMIplay wheels as well, with the exception of the failure of the Bitex free hub which was covered under warranty by Bitex.
The rims have remained true with no other issues.

I bet we could do something where we take a mold of Craig's head tube and supply that to Jen, who could take it from there.
Craig, 325racer is talking about Jen Green of Headbadges.com. There's been interest in having her make head badges from several of the 057 owners.

If trekcarbonboy will let me anywhere near his, I think we could take a mold. Not that that's something I've done, but I'm sure we could figure _something_ out.
Hell, worse comes to worse if someone else has the capability to take a mold of their headtube and could get it to me, I could get it to Jen, or get you her address so you could ship it directly.
I gotta say, some of the stuff she's been posting to facebook has been downright amazing -- it just keeps getting more impressive. It'd be a damn fine piece of bling for your Chiner, for sure.

No problem with the head tube mold. You can mold it when I bring it over to bleed the rear brake CMH. Bleed kit is the only tool I'm missing. Easy to mold. Just get a piece of that green foam for the bottom of flower bouquets and press it in. Reverse the negative with simple plaster or resin.
My fitness is way up and I've been killing my STRAVA pr's on the FS 26er so once I saddle up on this thing it will be interesting to see the result.

Wow, that is unacceptable. To be given an approximate time and it go 50% past the estimated time (and that 50% just happens to be a whole month) then I'd be done with the seller. And what's up with all of these delays for holidays and bike shows?? First of all.. Holidays? Are you serious? Are you or aren't you trying to build a business? And what sense does it make to put a customer on hold for a bike show? I'm sure the point of the bike show is to grow the business and make connections.. but at the cost of putting a customer on hold? Just doesn't make sense to me.
I'm sorry, I know Peter is kind of the go-to around here, and I guess mods can delete this if they want, and I do think he's done a mostly good job, but that's just silly imo and I'd ask for a refund and order a matte frame from a different supplier. My 2 cents.

There definitely won't be anything deleted. This is an absolute open forum, with information (not promotion) being it's primary purpose.

Not to mention that those holidays and show were already on the calendar when the first estimate was given. It's not like they were a surprise.

The "holiday" seems to be the go to excuse. I got the same thing from the eBay vendor when I asked why it took so long to ship my frame. I think holiday can mean anything from a literal holiday...to a vacation.
When I went to Germany...people asked why I chose to spend my holiday in Essen. ;D

I said no, and asked if he can send a UD matte frame and all parts in 3k gloss. I am definitely disappointed and pissed! How unprofessional can you get. I understand he seems to be at the mercy of the factory but it shouldn't take 88 days to find this out!

No. That wasn't the factory that was a lack of communication and professionalism. I'm not sure Peter quite realizes how quickly the tides can turn for a business's reputation, especially one that just started. I would've taken the refund and bought from somewhere else. Yes, they are at the mercy of the factory but they are in full control of communication.

A similar thing happened with my friend frame that he wanted in 3K. The factory quoted it and he paid for it and then 2 months later (or maybe longer) the factory just decided they weren't going to make the 3k frame. My boss got the UD frame instead and was content. Though a bit disappointed to not get exactly what he had built up in his mind.

Sorry to hear about your frame. Seems like the factories are getting busier and busier as the carbon frames are becoming the standard that everyone wants.
My IP-057 is UD and partially painted with a gloss finish, while my IP-036 is also partially painted but 3k Gloss. I like them both.

Finally! Peter shipped my frame and parts on Monday and I got it yesterday (Saturday). I put it together this morning. The only thing left is to bleed the rear brake and add decals. I left the steerer tube a little long to fiddle with the set up.
I'm happy enough with the matte frame but would have preferred the 3K gloss. Hopefully I'll get a chance to ride it on Thursday.
Has anyone else squeezed their down tube? I can literally flex the down tube by squeezing it laterally and longitudinally! I feel the same thing to a lesser extent with the seat tube. Obviously its made to be light but that seems a bit thin.

I also noticed how flexy the down tube was on my 057- feels like you could punch right through it. I assume this is due to the thickness and possibly also the fiber orientation there. No problems so far :)

Finally! Peter shipped my frame and parts on Monday and I got it yesterday (Saturday). I put it together this morning.
Awesome! Congrats on finally getting to the end of that long road. :D Looking forward to hearing the ride report.

1st ride report... HOLY $#!+ this thing is fast! I just PR'd the trail I often ride by 15 minutes! 8 total Strava pr's.
The trail is a mix of fast twisty hardpack clay, rocky-rooty stuff, killer rocky/boulder section and plenty of climbing. A lot of steep down-up rocky creek crossings. A total of 17 miles which usually takes me about 2:06 on either my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, or my old carbon Trek hardtail. Both 26". It took me 1:45 today. Now to be fair my fitness is way up right now, been pr-ing my commute to work as well, so it's not just the bike.
I was super comfortable on the .057. The set up was perfect. I didn't even have to tweak the seat position. Bar height and reach were great.
The stability and firmness of the wheels and the thru axels was awesome. The wheels really felt like part of the bike. I thought I would have to get used to the 29" wheels as far as steering but that was not the case. No problem with that. I did feel like the front tire wanted to slide out a couple times but I was hauling ass on dry loose dirt. The tires hooked up great everywhere else.
Shifting was smooth and accurate. 2x10. I might need to change the brake lever position a little, as my hands did cramp a little, but the brakes felt good.
The only thing I may need to change is either the seat or seatpost. It felt a little bouncy if I was sitting while hitting a bump. I couldn't tell if it was the seat or the seatpost flexing. I really think it might be the post. I guess some might think this is a good thing, a little added suspension, but it seemed too bouncy to me. I'll change out the seat first and see how it feels.

Try playing with tire pressures too. Might have a little to much rear pressure causing some bounce.

My 057 is the same way. I weigh 210lbs without any gear on right now and I've been pounding away on it for almost a year now. No problems. But yeah.. I had the same reaction as you when I first handled the frame.

As long as you're not getting rim strikes (usually pretty easy to tell when you have) you can go lower pressure. Another indication you've gone too low is when the tire starts feeling too squirmy, but even that is something that you can adjust for. Apparently cyclocross pros run their tires down into the teens on muddy races, which is amazing considering they're limited to 33mm wide! They've got to be almost riding on the rims at that pressure, and it's got to be squirmy as shit - but I think I remember reading that they say they get used to that and expect it.

That's been my experience as well. I tend to like about 28psi or so, less than 25psi just doesn't feel good. Conti X-kings as well but I can say the same thing for my Geax Sugauro's as well.

157.3 miles on this bike and I think I damaged my rim today. I wasn't even on the rocky section of my local trail. I was running it at 25lbs and never felt any rim strike.
I hope it's just the clear coat but I can feel a bump. I'll pull the tire tonight and maybe sand down the clear coat to inspect it better.

By the pictures, it appears you have cracked a bit more than the gloss topcoat.

Yeah, I pulled the tire last night and it's definitely not just the paint. I sent the pictures to Peter and he is contacting the factory to see how we will proceed.

I would agree, the more uniform side walls of the hookless wheels should be a bit thicker and stronger.

His build spec says the HR930C wheels which are hookless.
That really sucks, sorry to see that. Interested to hear how this goes for you - with the death of my 036 project I'm considering a carbon wheel build off my American Classic hubs, and Peter's got some very interesting new asym rims. The ones that I won are on hold for now as all my spare bike play money just got tied up in an Epic way. :)

I just received my family crest headtube badge, and I am quite pleased. Had it done by InsigniaWorks on Etsy. I just supplied the art file.
It's done with an acid etching process that is quite easy to do. I may even try to do it myself next time.

How's the fitment of the headbadge?? Looks like just a straight curve, vs the compound curves on the 057 headtube.

Looks great! If you wanted to do something like that but step it up with different metals (brass, copper, silver, etc) or enamel, you should check out some of the stuff Jen Green's been doing lately.

Fits great 325. I worked it a bit to get the best fit, and I'm sure there is some open space behind it but it looks great. No gaps at the edges. I just applied it with the tape that came on it. Definitely a strong bond.
I also received my replacement rim from Peter 2 days ago. Haven't even opened the box yet. Only cost me half the shipping fee. Now if only I lived near someone on this forum who knows how to build wheels and could swap it for me. That would be Epic! ;)

Just crossed the 1,000 mile mark with this bike yesterday and still loving it! Those have been some tough, rocky, Northeast miles. Aside from a rim ding and a broken spoke (just last week) all is well. Still on the original everything that I built it with. I'm going to change the chain, cassette, tires and pads and pound the crap out of it for another 1,000. Maybe try out some oval chain rings too.
So that was July till April to log 1000 MTB miles. Along with plenty of road bike miles. I know some guys log that in a month, I'm just noting it as a milestone.

I was doing a little maintenance last night in preparation for a trip and discovered that my SP7 seatpost has come loose at the top. The bonding of the carbon to aluminum has failed. :( It's only moving a little right now but I suspect it wont take much for it to get worse. This seems to be a fatigue failure because I have had no crash to speak of. If Peter will warranty it I will be going with the SP6 to avoid any such problem in the future.
On a brighter note: I just replaced the tires, cassette, chainrings and chain. I went with 2.35 Maxxis IKON's and they fit the frame no problem. I hope I like them cause they where damn expensive. ;D

Way back in the day I had a Slingshot frame (still have the frame) which needed a long 31.6mm post. At that point, the only options which were available were crazy expensive, especially since I was working at a bike shop at the time and getting paid very close to nothing. All I had on hand was 27.2 and 26.8mm posts. A Specialized Allez carbon was brought in for warranty work. Happened to notice the OD of the bike's down tube was 31.6mm, and the ID matched a post I had on hand. Cut the post down to about 2", sanded the finish off, then epoxied it in place to the end of the down tube, turning the small aluminum post into a long carbon post. I still have that seat post!
So yeah, you can definitely epoxy that thing back together.

I was taking my dog for his first MTB run so I was definitely disappointed.
As you can see in the picture below the SP6 (on right) that I was sent to replace the SP7 was less than half the thickness. It snapped like a saltine cracker with little effort.
Peter has sent me a new SP7 and I will be sure to check the thickness before installing it.

that's paper thin for a seat post. Glad nobody got harmed because of the broken post.
