Component Deals & Selection / Re: XT brakes and XTR
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:24:37 PM »
I haven't used XTR yet....will get back about that in July.
Otherwise, whereas some spent on drivetrain or wheels or whatever - I went with brakes....ease of setup and reliable - that is Shimano...didn't want to fool around there.  Cheap price for premium brakes...most brands you will be over 400.00 for top of line(except for merlincycles you can't find the m987's for less than 400.00)

Thanks for doing this.
Would like to see more since we all have tried different things...maybe a separate area for personal reviews?
I will be doing Kenda's Kozmik Lite II next month.
I have attached a picture as a preview.
I liked them because they were lite but more the pattern looks to be good for street but it has decent side lugs for cornering and should overall be a fast rolling tire.
Lastly, the tread looks to be good for going up hill - thinking little slippage.

Component Deals & Selection / XT brakes and XTR

Since XT brakes seem to be popular.
I would recommend checking merlincycles.com
I just picked up some xtr 987 brakes for 320.00 which I remember some nearly paid that for XTs
Now, you can get XTs at merlincycles.com for 191.00(front and rear) w/ no disc ---- 212.00 with disc
http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-xt-m785-disc-brake-set-front-rear-black-55284.html
http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-xt-m785-silver-disc-brake-set-rt81-rotors-55067.html
Free shipping over 86.00 and if you can wait, a 10% discount should come along.
Currently, they have a 10% discount on all XTR components...ends today.

Sales & Classifieds / Re: XT M780 shifters and rear derailleur

Not expecting much as the community is still small - as I said earlier....maybe try posting here first and if no good go to craigslist and then ebay or keep for spares.

Sales & Classifieds / XT M780 shifters and rear derailleur
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:46:08 AM »
Going to be the first to try this.
I was going to use XT shifters and rear derailleur on my chiner but have since gone with XTR because of a sale at Merlincycles.com(ends today).
I now have Shimano XT shifters(left and right, 2 ring or 3 via switch and 10spd) model M780 w/ inner cables(no outer) and the RD-M780 SGS(long cage 10spd) rear derailleur that I am ready to sell.
They are new and asking $60.00 for each.
I have an XT cassette that I may sell also.
brmeyer135@gmail.com if interested.

Another thread should be started about orange seal vs. stan's or one's experiences with different sealants but:
I don't see where OS is appreciably better - just read through the 'make your own sealant' - they are using the old stan's formula(in some form) and just trying to get as good as results as stan's
I see other places where slime is used and isn't as thick as stan's and can't seal up XC specific tires like a Schwalbe Thunder Burt - I put OS more like slime(more runny? stays 'wet' longer'(subjective))
I guess, from a 1000ft up one would put stan's on top with OS close second and then slime third and a far fourth would be the rest:  caffelatex, bontrager, spec and on

ENTER!
and this is another reason why IPlay gets top props.

you need the shimano e-thru style like:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/shimano-xtr-trail-e-thru-rear-axle-m988/rp-prod54897
There are some after market version but they seem to be for weight weenies with starting prices of 100euros and come from Germany or Italy.
Here is one for example:  http://r2-bike.com/Steckachsen
it is the tune e-thru 6th one down for 107euros
and you still need the nut for this one.

Friend had a tuneup done on an older bike with a few parts replacement - totalled $220.00
parts were tires/tubes...so 200.00 for 'complete' tuneup
I was quoted 25.00 for putting in a BB30 crank.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: SRAM XX1 1x11 Discussion
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:58:49 AM »
using the 10 is the reason you have to have a special hub
Looks like Shimano is going 11x using a regular hub:
http://www.bicycling.com/mountainbikecom/bikes-gear/first-look-shimano-xtr-goes-11-speed
11-Speed Cassette
The new group, called M9000 by Shimano, now has an 11-speed rear cassette with a 40-tooth largest cog. The cassette features a carbon spider and the 40-tooth cog is made of aluminum. Unlike SRAM, which uses a 10-tooth small cog and requires a special hub driver, Shimano retains the standard 11-tooth small cog, so the cassette will work on existing 10-speed freehub bodies.

Also, are you pretty happy with the Formula R1's?
What year are yours?  Older ones seem to be tight clearance.
XT's have been popular here so interested in how your R1 install went?

To turboenterprise:
I looked at my wheels(built by lucky spoke of austin) and he taped the wheel and then screwed on the rubber nut/gasket(see picture).
