Maintenance, Mechanics, & Tools / Gearing question
« on: February 18, 2024, 11:31:21 AM »
I'm not sure where to put this--but it kind of fits in mechanics/maintenance.

I've recently switched from a 53/39 + 11-28 Sram 10 speed road bike to a 50/34 + 11-28 Shimano Ultegra mechanical 11 speed road bike. I found 99% of the time with my old bike, I'd spend it in the small chainring, so I figured the smaller front crank would help out and give me a bit more gearing options on the low end.

However, instead I've found something very annoying--when I'm in the small ring, I can't go very far down the cassette before the chain starts rubbing on the front derailleur, even with the front derailleur trimmed to the first click. Also, on the big ring, I can't go very far up the cassette before the chain starts rubbing, even with a trim click, and there aren't a lot of gear combinations in the middle between those.

I end up regularly being frustrated since a lot of my base riding ends up being jumping back and forth between the big and small ring trying to find a gear that fits my cadence without rubbing. I thought it was a front derailleur alignment issue, but since it's pretty evenly rubbing both directions, I don't know how I'd be able to adjust cable tension and get better behavior. Maybe there's something in the height of how high the front derailleur should be? or angle alignment?

Do you all have any advice?

Hello everyone and happy thanksgiving to the US folks!

I wanted to create a build thread for my Airwolf YFR066 to document my experience with the frameset, as well as all the rest of the Aliexpress deals I have gotten over 11.11 sales (and soon to be black friday sales).

Overall goals:
-Less aggressive geometry (my current bike I don't have steerer tube left and I need a >17 degree stem to get the handlebars up enough)
-Space for larger tires (25c barely fits with my current frame, 28-32C is ideal with room to grow)
-hydraulic disc brakes
-full carbon ~50mm wheels with wide rim width, tubeless compatible
-newer groupset with at least 11 speed
-Compact/semi compact crank with shorter crank arms (and power meter)
-Similar weight or lighter than my current ~2010 era road bike (~18 lbs)
-As many random Aliexpress orders as I can get  :)

Here's a link to a Google Sheets with parts list and Aliexpress links: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y6uIFHe2vutMn3ikGuVbpPe8hX08V3uloqBeOdkRBoc/edit?usp=sharing

I've also attached a screenshot of the document to this post as a reference.

Quick overview:
-Airwolf YFR066 frame without integrated cockpit
-Elitewheels Edge 50mm wheels
-OG-Evkin stem/handlebar
-Shimano Ultegra 11 speed hydraulic disc groupset
-Magene P505 power meter
-GP5000 ~30c tires

Currently rolling up in the 16-17lb range.

Received so far:
-OG-Evkin handlebar
-Shimano Ultegra groupset

Component Deals & Selection / Buying GP5000 from Aliexpress?
« on: November 22, 2023, 06:51:33 PM »
I'm wrapping up purchases for my bike build (most of which I got on 11.11) now that the black friday coupons are coming around. Has anyone purchased GP5000s from Aliexpress before? I know the base cost may not be that much less, but once you add in the coupons it looks to be a good bit less expensive.

Thoughts?

I'm looking at groupset components and trying to decide between Shimano mechanical/Di2, and Sram AXS 11/12 speed. It feels "easy" to get Shimano grey market from Aliexpress, but where should I be looking for the best deals on Sram? I know there are Aliexpress vendors like Ltwoo, but I don't trust their electronic shifting yet and it's not that much cheaper than Shimano 105 Di2.

Do you tend to buy a complete groupset or do you buy the shifters/brakes/derailleurs from Sram/Shimano, and then add in chinese/Aliexpress cranks/cassettes/chains/etc?

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Best value carbon wheels?
« on: October 29, 2023, 08:33:20 PM »
Hello everyone! I've been lurking the last few weeks trying to understand what vendors and components are available and reliable. One question I had was really around road carbon wheel sets. I've primarily heard of Elitewheels as the "go to" option, but then there are quite a few varieties and I'm not positive where the ideal point is to spend money.

For reference, today I have an older Fuji SST frame, 2008 generation Sram Red, and Giant P-SLR1 wheels today, and I'm looking at making a newer build with a bit more of an endurance frame (maybe the CFR-1056 frame) and wider tires, but still trying to keep the weight down.

Cheapest: Elitewheels ENT Disc - 50mm depth, 17/26mm width, 1751g - $431 - https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255799847268989.html
Midlevel?: Yuanan (Elitewheels supplier) - 50mm depth, 1329g - ~$605 - https://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,4527.0.html
Most expensive?: Elitewheels Edge - 50mm depth, 21/28mm width, 1347g - $713 - https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804581390724.html

Are there any other popular/reliable options I haven't considered? I'm sure there are other vendors I haven't considered?

Thanks!
