29er / Re: Chinese Carbon 29er Pic Thread.
« on: March 19, 2018, 06:43:28 PM »
sorry for the really low quality pic. currently only have my 8 year old key-button phone with a 2Mp camera.
But yeah, this is pretty much the current setup. Thrust BR-MT01 29er size 17" with QR to use my current wheels i had left from my cheap 500€ 29er hardtail. Ullicyc carbon fork, singlespeed with oval 34t motsugov chainring, 14t point steel cog, cheap br-m355 hydro shimano brakes, schwalbe Thunder Burt snakeskin 2.25 fr/re, 680mm handlebar(unknown amazon carbon bar), 110mm ec90 stem, rxl sl carbon saddle, cut some foam grip meant for touring handlebars to appropriate size and used water based lube to slide it on and keep it in place, elita one carbon seatpost with 15mm setback(i think), VXM crank, ztto ceramic BB, classic shimano pd m520s.
i use a 8spd chain that wasn't used anymore

I still have some plans for this build, but i don't think that this is the right thread

29er / Re: ebay vs direct to bike co vs aliexpress
« on: March 17, 2018, 01:04:48 PM »
Though i can't speak for ebay or directly from the producers website, i had a very pleasant experience with aliexpress. My 29er frame cost me stupidly low 220€ from Thrust. QR, though the dropouts can be changed to work with thru axles, which are sent together with the frame. You also get a starnut for the headset, the headset bearings, seat clamp and other bits and bops.
Paid via Sofort(which is working via the bank account and very safe. Is very popular with German and Austrian online bikeshops because they get their money very fast)
Took about 1.5 months to arrive, though i had to pay 20% import taxes in Austria and the general fee of at least 10€ which was 72€ in total, so the frame cost went up to just under 300€. Still ridicilously cheap. You can opt for some "special"kind of shipment which costs about 50€ or sth and that should help to clear the border without paying any taxes. This would only be effective if the frame costs more than 300€.
Or you can also tell the seller to declare the frame to have a lower value than the actual one. Might work, but not always since the guys at the border know how much a chinese frame costs by now

maybe look on the used market? many sell their older XT cranks for whatever reason.
Or maybe even try out IXF cranks(aliexpress). Surely they are heavy and no fancy hollowtech technology, but i got them for 29€ BB(Shimano 24mm Standard BSA) included.
If you are on a extreme budget and weight isn't much of a concern, they might work for you. They got the older 104mm BCD for the outer and 64mm BCD inner, so you could either reuse you older chainrings or get motsugov aluminium alloy 7075 series narrow wide. cost me under 7€ per piece. i got myself 32t, 34t, 36t and 38t for every situation, also all together cost less than a name brand chainring. They are also available in oval(i use them on every bike i own) so if you want to try oval, without absolute-black, rotor or osymmetric chainrings, thats a possibility

i alrdy feel obliged to pedal hard if i have a rigid fork and singlespeed setup. I feel like all that efficiency should make some speed on the climbs. No idea how obliged i would feel with that wheelset though O.o

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Cockpit parts
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:35:20 PM »
Ali parts will work just fine. Got 2 bars from them, one is a integrated one for my XC rigid singlespeed with 600x120mm(yes oldschool) and a 760mm for my trailbike. The integrated one weighs about 259g afaik. thats for the bar and the integrtaed stem. didn't weigh the 760mm one though.
I also got one BXT carbon saddle which is stated to be at 65g(not sure but that but surely under 100g). A bit narrow, but way more comfy than one might imagine cause it flexes a bit. Proably not the prettiest one, but it works and weighs nothing

i got a fairly simple setup to wax. since i got a ricecooker for my rice dishes alrdy, i got myself a mixing bowl that fits into the pot so i don't have to buy another rice cooker or other gear that fills up my lil kitchen. Got them for 12€ in a pack of 5 diffrent sizes. I don't use only wax, since i mostly got the issue that it gets squeezed out very quickly(after maybe 50k or sth). I use the recipe form Oz cycle as a base, so i mix "paraffin oil"(thsi term is very diffrent in every country. Here it can mean lamp oil, baby oil, even kerosene) about 3/5 parts wax and 2/5 from the oil, so it has the consistency that it smears when you glide ur fingernail over the mixture(i usually use a knife, dip it in and let it cool to test this). If it crumbles its too hard and you need more wax, if it starts to feel like toothpaste you need more wax.
I use wax granulate which was pretty expensive at 15€/kg, but it melted very quickly and didn't have any color residue form candles or sth similar. After i cleaned my chain in the ultrasonic cleaner(5mins x4 and turning it over after every 5 min) with clear solvent for dishwasher and about 80°C water, i dry it and leave it on th radiotor for about 2 hrs or sth. over night is probably evne better. then i dump the chain in the hot wax/oil mixture for about 15-20 mins and stirr it up every now and then to get all the air out of the links. then i let it cool for 20 mins on a old spoke or a coathanger, put on my quick-link and onto the bike. don't need to flex the links since the wax isn't stiffening up that much with the oil.
Use it on my traditional endurance roadbike, Xc rigid singlespeed and my trail FS. Especially in the winter and muddy conditions, the chain is the cleanest part after a ride :D

After The Ride / Re: Before the ride...
« on: March 01, 2018, 10:48:09 AM »
Before the ride(which means the day before the ride) i lube the stanchions, check brakepads for wear and alignment, check how much wax is left on the chain(yes i wax all my chains). 30 mins before the ride, i decide on  the gear i wear depending on conditions, season and temperature. Either only go with a hydration pack with smaller bits and bops or a small backpack for things like food, 2 inner tubes, additional layers of clothing and such with a bigger 750ml or 1000ml water bottle on the frame. Check the tire pressure(23fr and 26re i still run tubes but plan on converting to tubeless soon), quick look at cassette wear, chainring wear, rear mech(clutch off for climbing), tire wear.

After the ride(if it was particularly muddy)i clean the whole frame and bits and bops that got the most grit with some hot soapy water and a sponge(also in the winter) since i got a flat without access to a gardenhose. im a bit carefull when cleaning around the brake calipers, since i once got quite some soap onto my pads which led to significant power loss, squeaking and a really strange smell whenever they got hot. I check whether the chain, cassette or chainring got particularly dirty. if so, i clean everything with my ultra-sonic cleaner(worth every cent to me) and get the next chain onto my drivetrain. Rewaxing only one chain is too time consuming, so i got 3 chains for each bike. Makes re-waxing a lot more efficient

26er & 27.5 (650b) / DNM rear shock anyone?
« on: March 01, 2018, 10:22:58 AM »
Good evening from Austria!

Has anyone had experiences with DNM suspension parts? In particular their rear shocks. I was thinking about getting either a air-sprung AOY-36RC or go for the more heavy duty coil sprung RCP3 shock. Strangely i need 190x51mm for my frame(that's what i measured) and it only gives right about 120mm of travel. It's a really cheap full sus with no real working shock or fork. I want to get a working shock without spending several hundred € on a name brand like Rockshox, Fox or Marzzocchi.
All the reviews i find online are either a 13yr old slightly obese american kid that acts all like"in da hood" or too short and very general ones.
Their website looks legit, genuine but with the alrdy well known google translator kinda english.
if there was alrdy made a thread about DNM, im sorry didn't find it now.

Road Bike Frames, Wheels & Components / Re: My workswell horror story
« on: February 23, 2018, 09:25:02 AM »
hm, i ordered my tideace frame around middle of december and have it now for about 3 weeks, so it took 1,5 months. Also it got caught at the border so ya can add at least 3-5 days. Chinese newyear wasn't that much of an issue, but it was still christmas during the delivery time.
Where did ya order your workswell? Aliexpress or somewhere else?

29er / Re: Carbon Integrated Handlebar for MTB
« on: February 15, 2018, 03:50:13 PM »
got oldschool style XC bars with 100mm stemlength and 600mm barwidth. But i will change to 120mm soon. Works just fine, but mine had two holes on the backside for a garmin mount or sth, so if you want to flip the whole thing, you have to cover up the holes(did it with carbon vinyl wrap). It had the same sweep and angle like you described, so not really all that good for uphill. Im used to slammed -17° stems on my roadbike, so it feels very unefficient and strange if i use it for steep climbs. But held up quite well so far, no creeks, no cracks and still probably lighter than handlebar and stema combinations. Also the middle is aero shaped ^^

You are telling me, that this monster marathon is a chinese frame? Wow, looks srly high quality with the paint and all. No idea where ya got so much money for the wheels, but the weight is impressive.

Hi, I'm Calvin from Austria, where bigger chinese packages get taxed with 20% -.-
I just recently got my 29er HT frame in size 17" and a carbon rigid fork. Love the setup, since im mostly a roadie, a suspension always felt strange and kind of unnecessary for XC. The wheels(srly heavy at almost 2100g) and tires(Continental Race Kings 2.2in or Schwalbe Thunder Burt 2.25) are from my old entry level hardtail, but mostly the stuff i got on my rig is chinese. Handlebar, stem, seatpost, seatpost clamp, seat, crank, oval chainring, Ti bolts, QR skewers. Brakes are cheap Br-m355 hydro brakes from Shimano with the cheapest 180 and 160 rotors.
Plan to make a relatively budget weightweenie budget XC built. Either singlespeed or a 11spd e13 TRS+ race cassette(9-46t) with XTR mech and shifter, either Deore or XTR brakes(depends how much i really wanna spend), KCNC razor rotors(85g for 160mm), Velosa carbon wheels(1350g), Schwalbe Furious Fred(360g per tire), tubeless of course.
