29er / Re: The $300 shipped carbon eBay 29ers...

There is this one. You might be able to get it around $400. The HA is 71 with a 495mm long fork. If you're running a SID 120 (about 525mm) you will be roughly 69.5 for a HA. If that is slack enough for you, the rest looks really good.

The geo looks like the 202 frame. 69.5 ha with a 100mm fork is decent but the shortish TT and long 445 CS's aren't screaming fun trail bike if that's your poison. No experience with it though.

I know I've asked this in a couple other threads but would one of you 062 owners be kind enough to measure the CS clearance? This forum is making it harder to choose a frame.  ;D  I would like the geo numbers on this one the best so far but am nervous a 27.5+ tire won't work. I'm not looking for a huge amount of clearance, just enough to run a 2.8 would be great. Thanks

Cool thread. Mine is downhill skiing and traveling. Don't travel as much as I like though. Foamman1, where are you located? There is a small airport near Sugarloaf ski area In Maine that has trails right there.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: how many wheels
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:24:34 AM »
Just one "happy medium" set. It does everything i need and then some.
Might as well get a spec list going while we're at it.
Nextie 27.5 x 35mm outer hooked rims 420g each
Hope Evo 2 hubs 40t
DT Competition spokes
DT Pro-lock brass nipples
1750g taped and valved

I've been in the mindset that light race day wheels are great but if they won't take a daily beating, I probably won't trust them to get me through a race. But that's just my opinion and I'm not a pro racer.

Thanks for the measurements. The 2.8 should fit then. The 27.5 x 2.8 is more about height and volume than just width.

So what is the rear tire clearance like on these 202's? Looking to run 2.75x2.8 tires. I believe 70mm is the minimum or close to it.
Thanks

29er / Help me spend $$$! Building a new carbon HT.
« on: June 18, 2015, 09:02:04 AM »
So I am starting to acquire parts and pieces for bike #2. I'm going to try and keep it as close to $1000 as possible with a limit of $1500 (not including dedicated 29er wheels) and would like it rideable by the end of the year.

I am having a hard time picking out a frame so some help with that would be greatly appreciated. I want a 29er HT with the option of running a 27.5 x 2.8 WTB Trailblazer tire on my existing Nextie 35mm rims. I know the 256 frame will work with that rim/tire setup, but does anyone know if the clearance is the same or greater on other frames? Particularly the FR202 as that one can be had for around $350 on eBay. My frame wish list would include - 19" or 20" (I'm 71" tall), slacker than 70 degree HT angle when running a 120mm fork, plenty of clearance to run 27.5+ options, BSA bb, 142x12 rear end, 12k weave matte finish, and under $400. Is that doable?

As far as parts go, I'm pretty open as what to run as long as it fits in the budget. Here is what I have planned so far.

Fork - 2014 Rock Shox Reba RL 120mm 15mm axle (ordering this weekend)
Handlebars - EC70 riser bars
Stem - Stylo 90mm
Grips - ESI chunky
Headset - CC 40
Brakes - SLX f / XT r
Rotors - XT RT86 180f / 160r
Crankset - ?? (preferably a Sram GXP for BSA bb's)
Seatpost - ??
Saddle - ??
Rear Der - Shimano Saint M820
Cassette - XT M771 11-36t
Chain - ??
Shifter - M820 Saint
29er wheels - 35mm wide carbon hoops on Hope hubs when the budget allows (not anytime soon)

The parts that are listed are already (or soon to be) in my parts bin. I haven't ordered the fork yet but will be this weekend unless some one can change my mind. It's a new Reba RL for $300. Pretty hard to beat I'm figuring.

Thanks for the help and guidance. Will post pictures as things come in. Which means this thread may go awhile with out being updated.  :D

29er / Re: My Matte UD IP-098 Build
« on: June 15, 2015, 08:07:06 PM »
Nice job! Building a bike from scratch (even if it's left over parts) is definitely fun and rewarding. Not to nitpick, but it looks like the chain is a bit long. It's in little/little combo now so it's not too long, but long enough that you may get some serious chain slap. Bike noise, like chain slap and BB creaks, is a pet peeve of mine  ;D

If the new bike felt stiffer with the same air pressure, the bike will have a different suspension curve. Probably ramps up quicker. Not that it's better or worse, just different and requires different air pressures.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: My FM 196 build

What's the sizing like on these? I'm looking for one for my daughter to build with spare parts. By the numbers, they seem pretty small when comparing the 15" to the small Santa Cruz chameleon and 27.5 highball.

Vipassana those are some great pictures!
Mine was taken at the Carrabassett Valley Outdoor Center in Maine. That is Sugarloaf in the background. The town and local NEMBA group have been doing an amazing job building trails in the past few years.

there are some pretty good deals on S&C right now. They are also offering an extra 10% off. XT brakes for $81 and for us carbon junkies, the new carbon levered XTR trail M9020 for $165! 11spd XTR shifters for "cheap" too. Enjoy!

Correct, -057 from Peter.

Thanks. Great picture!

Here is one from a couple weeks ago.

Very different from Arizona- Lakes District in England, looking down on Grasmere.

Which frame is that? The rear end looks nice and short.
