Re: 29er XC Hardtail - Boost - Modern Geometry
Anyone know of alternatives for the Trifox?

This is the closest I've found: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000686903353.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_groupList.8148356.28.68063cc60SRHWu
Geo chart is identical except for chainstay length and wheelbase being 9mm and 8mm longer. Haven't heard of the brand but there are a few other unknown sellers on Ali with it too.

Re: Plz help wheel newb! How to pick? What to pick? Want carbon mtb 29er wheels! 1. If you are ordering wheels, and not just rims, they should be delivered assembled and ready to go.

2. My go to hub choice is the DT Swiss 350 with straight pull spokes and center lock disc mounts. They are pretty bomb proof, not too expensive, not too heavy. To use that cassette you just need to make sure you select an XD driver freehub.

3. Some of the wheel brands have done a better job of offering modern storefronts and shopping experiences. I have multiple sets from FarSports that have all been great. Others like LightBicycle, but their pricing has gradually increased to match their Western style of branding and marketing. There are also people who go with the random Ali wheels and seem to be fine with them.

I would also suggest an inner width of at least 30mm, ideal for wider tires and even becoming common in the XC range.

Re: Plz help wheel newb! How to pick? What to pick? Want carbon mtb 29er wheels! All mountain is inline with the type of riding that the AM831 is meant for.

(A) is an aluminum rim. They are generally not built to be deep due to the different properties of aluminum vs carbon, but mostly down to weight (1980g for A vs 1320g for B). I have not looked at aluminum wheels in a while but $586 sounds high, although I just looked at FarSports and their prices have gone up a bit too.

Personally, I would go for carbon wheels. You've already invested in a nice frame, why weigh it down with heavy wheels? Plus I tend to ride each bike for a few years and the price difference isn't much when averaged across the number of rides/hours during that time.

Re: Plz help wheel newb! How to pick? What to pick? Want carbon mtb 29er wheels! I think the 36x30 should be good, it has 30mm internal. I'm running 2.6 front and 2.4 rear with 30mm internal and neither is stretched wide or lightbulb shaped so you should be good with 2.5 and 2.3. I think 35mm+ internal is getting into Enduro territory.

I chose centerlock for the versatility, you can run any rotor and don't really compromise weight with an adapter vs 6 bolt hub.

For sure XD and Boost spacing.

Re: Carbon Rims - More money = better? I think any response is going to be anecdotal at best and even the biggest names can have issues with rock strikes. I know multiple people putting in over 10,000 miles a year in rocky terrain, across all types of rims and price points, and the worst results are a broken spoke here and there or a wheel that needs trued. If you're running through multiple rims in just a few years it might be the rider and not the price point? Also maybe consider inserts like cushcore or hucknorris

Re: Carbon Rims - More money = better? 22.5 inner is far from AM by modern standards. You'll find 30mm inner trickling down to XC at this point. I agree that a deeper rim is likely to provide a stiffer and more durable profile. For what it's worth, a friend that is particularly rough on his gear swears by the Santa Cruz Reserve wheels with their lifetime warranty and just sends them in for a replacement at the first sign of an issue. Maybe worth looking into any brand with that level of support, one big upfront purchase instead of a few bargains year after year.

Re: The Shiny New AM831 Group Buy (A) Thread!
I thought I was buying a working frame and didn't see anything about gambling. It also took more than a year longer for it to be ready and I think most of us assumed they were sorting out these kinds of details. But I guess we all have different expectations when buying something. But could you imagine Santa Cruz releasing this frame to the public?

Before the frames began to ship we knew about the issue with the fork crown hitting the downtube, already calling in to question the design quality. How is that not taking a gamble? If you haven't noticed, the entire world is behind on delivering products over the past two years, and frame manufacturers pushing back release dates is par for the course, even before covid. This direct to consumer business model is a side hustle for them with the majority of direct to consumer sales going through AliExpres/Baba, but still nothing compared to OEM sales for most of them. THEY AREN'T Santa Cruz! That's why this frame cost you less than $1,000! The quality of the product is debatable (outside of this frame), but you are not going to get the same customer service as a Western brand that values is reputation.

This forum has a few thousand registered accounts and who knows how many are actually active or have bought any frame recently. Compare that to that number of frames sold from all of the pop-up shops on Ali all selling the same frames and showing hundreds of units sold. To think you have some sort of position to make demands because of this forum and group buy is just asinine. With how much so of yall are posting now I would have assumed you did your due diligence about the process and expectations of buying a frame direct from China. You shouldn't have to settle for a defect but that was the risk in jumping in for the cheaper pricing with an untested frame, the first Chinese frame I'm aware to use VPP, from a vendor that wasn't considered to be in the top list to begin with.

I realize yall probably don't want to hear any of that but this thread has become a bunch of Karen's demanding the manager. Instead of crying "poor me, I paid money", why not use your collective numbers to go through the proper channels (payment providers) and try to get results. It's obvious Eddy doesn't read everything here, or even have much say in things, and it's crazy to think they're going to ship these for free worldwide without some pressure.

Re: Carbonda FM909
Getting closer. 11.23kg

Why Minions on an XC bike to start with, and especially if you're counting grams?
