Here's a cross section.   It's 3mm of carbon on each side.

Component Deals & Selection / Anyone riding xmiplay wheels?
« on: June 30, 2019, 06:18:20 PM »
Hi all,

I bought a frame from these guys in 2014.    It has been awesome.

> P-056, size 17.5, bb30, UD matte, 135 QR

I'm now trying to replace my old Stans wheels.   I'm considering this wheelset (note, it's QR so options limited.)

I'm hoping someone else has been running these wheels/rims and can report on quality.

Thanks for the suggestion.   I don't want a full suspension bike, nor to do I think I need one.

The point is, there are plenty of people showing pics and vids of ip-056/7 frame build ups on this forum, and elsewhere on the net.   I'm wondering how they are holding up?  If anyone riding 056/7 has some feedback, please share.

I have a IP-056.   http://www.xmiplay.com/ProductDetails1572

It's a rigid singlespeed with a FK029 fork.

Both from XMIPLAY.

I built it up, and road it a few times over 4 months.  On day, on a trail, the fork snapped of during braking.   Bert at XMLIPLAY sent me a replacement.

I bought the frame late Dec, 2014.  Replacement fork shipped in early, April, 2015.   Just roughly 4 months.

I love my nerve with it.   I put the frame on the shelf and went back to my heavy steel bike, which is very reliable, but heavy!   Now, at 1.5 years later, I'm building it up again, with the replacement fork.   Am I nuts?

I'm nervous about the FRAME and the FORK.     I ride in bumpy places that friends ride full suspension bikes.   Looking at the link above for the frame, you'll see a quote seen on quite a few other frames.

Quote
This warranty does not cover:
    * Normal wear and tear, any damage caused by accident, misuse, neglect, abuse, or stunt riding (veld bashing, riding down stairs, or similar activities).

This really worries me, as I ride down rutty, rooty, rocky stuff that could be thought of as stairs, or bashing.   I don't want to worry about this bike if I ride it hard, hammer pedal it, or go flying down a bumpy trails at top speed.

So, what is the word about this frame?  And reviews?  Ride reports?

Pardon me for cross-posting from that other popular forum, but this should answer your questions.

29er / Anyone ride rigid? (broken fork)

I have an IP-256 frame with a FK029 fork.  I ride hard, and the fork broke.

Does anyone else ride a rigid setup with foreign-sourced carbon parts?

29er / What cranks are you using on your carbon singlespeeds?
« on: December 18, 2014, 07:55:57 PM »
Hello,

I have an IP-056 on the way.  Thanks for the help here coming to that conclusion.

I'll be slotting in a Beer components EBB(when they are available next year.)

My last purchase to make is a set of GPX or Hollowtech (basically 24mm spindle) cranks.  I like the idea of X01 Carbon, but wonder if durability and/or stiffness will be an issue.  This will be a singlespeed, so 175mm crank arms, and lot's of out-of-the saddle pounding.

Alternatively, I could just go with XT or X01 aluminum cranks.  Would save a bit of money, gain a marginal bit of weight, but might be overall a better plan.

As for SRAM, I'm baulking a bit at the high cost of a chain ring, though I suppose I only really need to buy one.

Pleading for advice here.  Can't seem to make good sense.  Perhaps there's some real trail riding experience that can be shared?

Cheers

As for item 2 above, I see this on the team bear site (http://beercomponents.com/?page_id=588)

"This eccentric will require a crank with a 24mm Spindle.  Shimano, SRAM GXP, FSA…24mm spindles only."

Seems like it should have worked.  Clearly, it didn't.  They do mention this

"SRAM Truvativ Shim"

Perhaps that is what you need?  Did do you have this

I searched for details, and found something about the non-drive side being 22 mm for spindle diameter.  And that matches what Team Beer has for you.

Hello David,

Thanks again for your post.  I'll say it again, taking the time to post your experience is commendable.

I want to make sure I understand your take-aways, so I have some questions.

Quote
get the smooth bore BB receiver in the frame, rather than the threaded BSA such that you can rotate the BeerComponents EBB30;

Will get a frame with the BB30 bottom bracket shell.  The IP-256, IP-057, M-092, ORION have that option.  Most seem to.  Is there anything special that needs to be requested here?  Shall I just make sure it's BB30, and not BSA?

Quote
verify the EBB bearings are for HollowTechII (or similar) 24 mm straight through spindle (SRAM GXP/Truvativ need special bearings I believe)

Who do I verify this with?  Beer Components?  Can you explain or post pics of what didn't work with the GPX crank?  Seems strange that one 24mm crank works and another doesn't.  And too bad you couldn't use the Phil Wood bearings in the Beer EBB.  Perhaps you should go HollowTechII.

Quote
check your chain ring size will give you the most adjustment of the EBB30 possible without the ring impacting the chain guide.

I run 34T on the front, if I suddenly get really strong, I might go to 36T, but I doubt it.  I'm thinking that will fit in general.  What do you think?

29er / Beer components EBB - calling for usage stories
« on: November 21, 2014, 03:04:05 AM »
Sorry to be demanding.  I will pay for good advice!  (I'm in Sacramento, and will buy you a beer for good dirt).  Let's start a discussion here of using the Beer EBB.  If you've done it, please comment.  Would love to hear how it worked for you, or how it could have been better.

For starters, does the Beer components EBB work with the 057, 256, M-092 well?  Calling all users of this kit here in chinertown?

I've heard that tightening up the Beer EBB can be rough on a carbon frame.  Is this for real?  Any real usage reports?

I've also heard that chainrings might hit the stays on some frames.  While this isn't a Beer EEB issue, it is a singlespeed issue probably running an EBB.

If there are other issue, feel free to trumpet them up here.  Sweet as!!!

Run into a tree?  If rooted in the ground and think, then ok.  But, if a sapling, or just laying across a trail, then I'm concerned.    :P

I don't know why I don't pull the trigger on the 057.  Nothing but good words here.  Perhaps I will.  But, that M92, it keeps calling.

Top write up.  Thanks for making the effort here.  Really appreciate it!!

I'm laboring over my first dive off the chiner bridge, hoping the bungy is tied tight to my harness tight.

I'm looking for exactly what you've built up, essentially.  Carbon hard tail, carbon rigid fork, beer EBB.  I'm looking at the IP-507, M-092, ORION, an some others.  I've got the added distraction that I love my SE Stout.  I don't know exactly what I love about it exactly, the geo, the steel, the color, the bulletproof feel.  I want to love my next build even more.  I don't want to worry when a rock kicks up.  I don't want to think of it as a disposable, temporary ride. I want to think of it as the ride that lets me push a bigger cog, and climb a couple hills that I current can't clear.

Part of me wants to just go high quality steel, or Ti.  But, this carbon think is so fresh.   It's alluring.

You have given me some confidence, thanks for that.  Bloody hell - concussions?  Sorry to hear that.  Some might say it's the concussions that cause you to ride a rigid single.  But, you and I know both know, unless you live in a place full of rocks, single-rigid is close to bliss.  Railing corners is just one of the lovely parts of it, no dipping in the corners.  Of course, the low volume tubeless help.

Cheers - Gene

No worries mate.

easier/faster to align the wheel and brake disc
I currently have track mounts.  Looking forward for drop outs (any kind) and an EBB.  If I was wanting to ditch my wheels, I'd look into thru axle, for sure.  For now, I like my ZTR Stans tubeless 29's.  Not like, love them!

Curious though, is the IP-057, IP-256, and stuff from http://www.xmiplay.com/ the best way to go, or just what people on this forum have done, or both?  I'm feeling, perhaps wrongly, a bias to that line of chiners.

That M-092 seems to have great potential and geo.  So, now it's between the IP-057 with Bert, or the M-092 with Chris, or ??

I noticed both frames have a stated 2 year warranty.   Do ya think that means they are likely to fall apart in that amount of time?  I have been a steel is real rider for a long time, but this lure of carbon is strong.  I'm just wrestling with perception and reality.  I don't want to ride ride ride and worry at all that a rock kicked up is going to wreck my ride!

What I aim to do is have a carbon rigid setup, with BB30, Beer components EBB, and swap most of my components over.  I'm concerned the EBB may damaged some carbon frames.  Don't know that if that actually applies to either of these frames, or neither.

I think I might need to just shell out some cash, and learn it myself.   Just feel compelled to minimize the risk.  8)

Thanks for the responses.

I've been looking carefully as the charted geometry matches my SE  Stout closely.  Specifically the wheelbase and heat tube angle.  I have no reason to think the IP-057 wouldn't work other than geo.  Perhaps I'm grossly over thinking the geo, but I love my Stout, and just want it, but lighter.  If someone said this M-092 was really nice, based on experience, I'd consider it.

Perhaps this company isn't reliable?  Is there any feedback on Velobuild?

I have questioned the seller about that weird frame sizing vs geo chart mismatch.  And I do see what you are saying about the dropouts.  But, until you said that, I don't think I would have ever based a decision on the dropouts, other than my hub is 135mm with XT QR Stans 3.30 - but feel free to teach me something new, if I'm still anchored in the old school.

http://www.velobuildmall.com/vb-m-092-29er-carbon-fiber-mountain-bike-mtb-frame/

I have been reading about this frame on the web.  I like the 71 degree HT, and the other geometry measurements with the 18" frame.  Comes with optional BB30, so in theory I can run a Beer components EBB.

Has anyone else built up this frame?  I'd love to hear about real riding experiences, characteristics and durability with this frame?

I intend to run it rigid, with all likelihood the 29er carbon fork by Velobuild.
