I just "slashed" (as opposed to puncture) my fixie tire while riding it last Sunday. And realized just how thin those tires were. There's now an inch-long gash and I doubt I can close it without doing surgery. I've actually glued a 2x1 tire patch on the inside 'cause if I don't, I could actually see the tube.
So I'm in the market for a new tire, and I believe those cyclocross tires are more durable than the regular fixie or road bike tires. Any recommendations?

Cyclocross tires more durable? Not really. It all depends on the brand/model you pick.
A CX tire will show a more structured thread, but also usually softer, for a better grip. So that if you ride them 100% on the road they will melt like snow (OK, I'm pushing this too far now). Still, I use Continental CX Speed tires on my wife's 27.5" MTB. She uses it mostly on the road. They last long... but that's because she does not ride much :D
They are perfect for the usage: feel more secure then a road tire (very grippy), very comfy (35mm wide), faster then a 2" MTB tire and still enable to ride on "dirty" roads or cross some light and short trails. But again if you use it on your commuter, with a high mileage, they won't last long.

The lbs here didn't give me much of a choice. Went to 5 of them in the same afternoon and only one had the right size tire and it was the only piece left. End up with a Maxxis Detonator (road).
Thanks SpotsG.
