29er / Re: My first bike build: IP-256SL
« on: October 29, 2014, 07:22:34 PM »
Can see that there isn't much room! but what's the best thing to do? Can always go with a thinner NN in January I guess. Doubt helicopter tape will do much good?

On the 35mm rims I find the 2.25 to be plenty for XC and trail riding.  Keep the 2.35 on the front if you prefer.   The wide rim just adds so much width and volume to the profile.

As a side note I also found the Nics to wear out very quickly on the rear.   I have switched to Conti Trail Kings 2.2 Black Chili and am going to try also some Hutchinson Cobra 2.2  to see if I can get better durability.

7ducati, I preferred something else than Shimano too.
And went for these http://www.hopetech.com/product/race-e4/ instead

With a front 183mm rotor in front, and a rear 160mm

May be the 4 pistons are overkill for an XC bike, but they are very light.
They provide plenty of stopping power while needed, and are very modulable.

And since I messed up while mounting them, I know they are very easy to bleed.

the hopes get good reviews but at almost 3x the price of XT they should.   No doubt nice looking brakes.

So after doing some reading. (http://oldglorymtb.com/how-to-build-mountain-bike-1x-drivetrain-made-easy-1x9-1x10-1x11/)

According to this, if I go SRAM X9 Type 2 RD, I can run a cheap cassette (PG1070), and then get a Wolf Tooth Ring (and maybe a chain guide) and I should be okay

Type 2 clutch derailleur and a narrow wide chain ring and I think you can avoid the chain guide.  The cheap cassettes though sometimes have fewer cogs connected onto a main carrier and if you have an aluminum freehub body you will gouge that more.  For that reason I usually go for the XT cassette or the high end srams.

Nice looking build.  Seat stays look so thin makes me nervous.   Can you update us with a ride review?
thanks

How much was the ip-sp6 post?  The Thomson masterpiece I bet will be pretty close to the same weight at ~200gms and more durable but I agree you pay a premium.  with the popularity of droppers there seems to be a number of Thomsons on ebay.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Grip shift
« on: October 10, 2014, 08:57:01 PM »
after numerous thumb sprains on my left hand I went to grip shift because it was easier.  I actually got used to it very quickly and had no issues with it.  That was the nine speed carbon XO series and I used it 3x and 2x with bash.  never had a failure. Shifts were crisp.  The early versions had numerous clicks on the front derailleur so you could actually trim it a little if you had to.  the newer versions had 3 click definite detentes.  But when I went to 2x10 it seemed that the FD throws were easier than I remembered and I went back to triggers.  Now with XX1 of course its not an issue at all.  I did try the gripshift xx1 but found the detentes a little soft and people commented on missed shifts.  I kind of miss the grips and the ability to grab a handful of gears really fast.   I think the triggers with integrated brake levers like ispec make for a much tidier and adjustable handlebar.  and its easier to fit in dropper remotes etc.

I bought a couple of Gravity 720 carbon bars from a friend that gets a lot of product to review for a website he runs.  He said they were good for a girls bike.  I'm okay with that.  But a lot of guys here are running Chromag 780s since thats the macho thing to do.  My ER doc friend says he has noticed an up tick in the number of broken little fingers.  That would also explain the growing number of barkless sections, about handlebar height, on the local trees.  I will stick with my 720s and keep my little fingers intact.

I also have bought light carbon 700s off ebay along with carbon/metal stems and run them hard on my nomad...no problems.  I guess it only takes one failure.  I would assume the offerings from iplay and the like would be one step better and I wouldn't have any reservations with them.  I also bought several road bars from ebay which are obvious knockoffs but they as well have been great performance and value.

Other than just copying the S design what are the advantages of the new design.  Lighter, stronger?    Do you have any testing to show the difference.  I wonder if the extended round side profile is more prone to rock strikes?

After The Ride / Re: 26 isnt dead...or is it?
« on: October 10, 2014, 08:04:18 PM »
If Giant has its way 26 is dead,  29 is dying and 27.5 is going to be it.   So is 27.5 the best all around or is it good at neither.   For my money the 27.5 is as nimble as 26 but adds in a little roll over advantage.   however a 29er on the right trails or in good hands is faster, carries that speed and rolls over stuff easier...however its a bit cumbersome in tight techy trails.  my 2 cents.

I have all three sizes but am cleaning out the 26.  When there are more tire selections for 27.5 then I will be a happy camper.

From what I saw, your link was only for the light, not the battery, charger, or accessories.  I have seen lots websites selling the CREE LED lights for $25 but they were only the light itself, nothing else.

I'm not sure which link you were referring to but the ones I have looked at in that price range have included the battery and headband...more or less the same as the magic shine kit I bought.  I bought mine when geoman was still around and he provided the better battery.   Whether that battery is worth the premium its hard to tell but there were several stories about the cheaper batteries.  However my friends that are running the cheapos are pretty happy.

26er & 27.5 (650b) / Re: XMIplay 650B Carbon Hard Tail

I like my 29ers also.  I doubt I'll like the 27.5 as well but I've been wrong before.  :)  I'll keep you posted.

I would assume that the 650b got built?  Can you give us your comparison between it and your 29er.   I am surprised that the head tube angle of all the chinese 650s are 71deg but when I look at almost every brand name frame I see nothing that steep.  now that may be because the chinese frames assume 100mm  fork and perhaps the others are using longer fork lengths and hence the slacker head angles?  anybody care to comment on how they find the head angle on their chinese builds and in the context of what kind of trails they are riding.  Also I see a number of chinese 29er with sub 70deg HA when I would have thought they would be steeper?  seems like its backwards to me.

I bought a pair of the Magic Shine and they have been great.  My friends have recently bought these at a much cheaper price and they appear to be about the same thing and they are impressed.   I have bought other items from Deal Extreme with no complaints.  http://www.dx.com/p/marsing-cree-xm-l-u2-1000lm-3-mode-cool-white-bike-light-headlamp-black-4-x-18650-312446#.VDId7GddU4l

I was just quoted $560 for the 256 from Peter.

I have seen some reviews on the IP 033, FR-211 and the LTK-023 which appear to be the same frame.  I see the differences in geo and wonder how this rides in comparison to the 057.   On ebay the fr211 is quite a bit cheaper.   Anybody have any experience on these frames?
