29er / Another CS-MB01 Build has started!
« on: March 28, 2017, 11:28:42 AM »
So, some of my riding buddies have been so impressed with the punishment I have put my bike through (and a few serious crashes), that one of them forked up some greenbacks and I ordered him a frame that I will be assembling.

So far, the build will be SRAM XX1 11 speed drive train, Fox Stepcast 32 fork (black), Hope Tech3 X2 Brakes, and a slightly used set of Easton wheels with MI hubs from his backup bike.  We are working out the details on some of the other components, but once I have more info and pics, I will post them.

He ordered the same size frame as mine. Currently, mine sits at 20.3lbs with GX drive train and carbon wheels from Peter.  I think my my wheels will be a little lighter, but his drive train is considerably lighter.  Hopefully his will be sub 20lbs when complete.   ;)

More to come soon!

29er / Urgent! Need QR Dropout set for 057 Frame.
« on: March 28, 2017, 01:01:11 AM »
Hey everyone,

Does anyone have a set of 057 rear dropouts they could sell me?  I ordered a frame for a friend and it came with the Thru Axle installed. When we tried to install the QR ones, they are not correct for the frame.  The supplier sent me another set, but they are the exact same as the first and while he is trying to figure out why he has the wrong ones, I need to resolve this asap.

I am in the USA, so best option would be for anyone state side to sell me a set.

Thanks!

29er / WCB-F-106 (WorksWell) Anyone built or ridden this frame?
« on: March 08, 2017, 02:43:09 PM »
I had someone asking me about 29+ size bikes and frames.  Not too much out there at the moment, but I found this frame to be interesting since the chain stay design allows for a more standard BSA/BB30 68-73mm Bottom Bracket.  Basically if he doesn't like the frame, going to something else with his group set would not be too much of a hassle unlike some of the other frames that are built on the wider BBs like fat bikes.

Just wondering if there is a review or conciseness on this particular frame?

29er / 057 Cable and hose routing question
« on: March 08, 2017, 10:39:39 AM »
Quick question,  I just received an 057 for a build and as I am looking at the cable routing, I assume the housing for the shifter butts up to the frame, and the steel cable runs through the teflon tubing.

However, for the brakes, they will be brake line hose, not cables.  I am wondering how to get the hose run through the frame.  Any suggestions?

Just came across this item on aliexpress.  I've bought headset bearings before, but this one is about 40% of the price of the last one I bought.  Also they have all common sizes.

Hope this helps someone out there with a case of the creaks...

29er / CS-MB01 torture at Alafia State Park in Central Florida
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:16:31 PM »
Boy was it a fun morning today!  It was my first time there and I rode some pretty sick stuff.  Even went off a huge drop with 4 feet of vert at the top!

People sometimes ask "Mountain biking in Florida? There are no mountains..."  Correct, but there are loads of old phosphate mines, an abandoned attempt to cut a channel through the state back in 1971, and other interesting things that leave us with some pretty sick trails.  If you ever make it to Florida, you NEED to hit Alafia State Park!  Put it on your biking bucket list for sure!

NOTE: This was my first time ever on these trails.  I went in blind on a lot of it and had to depend on watching the guy in front of me to know what features were ahead.

This is the tail end of the Moonscape segment.  Loads of ups and downs.  At about 0:19 in, you hear me groan. That's because I am deathly afraid of heights, and the shoulders are the trails all but disappear.  Also, I wipe out at the end.   ;D

This segment is known as Bridges.  Fast with some drops and jumps.

Gatorback segment.  Some seriously steep climbs.  The camera doesn't do it justice

Rabbit Ears - Short but nice section

OAF - A small but fast little downhill. Had to be careful because some of it was bi-directional

I have a few more to upload.  I will add them once they are up.

Enjoy!

29er / Some vids shot on my CS MB01
« on: January 04, 2017, 10:32:03 PM »
So yeah, the GoPro doesn't really do the climbs and drops justice, but it's still some fun footage from 2 different trail locations here in Southwest Florida.  I've been punishing the crap out of the bike for 3 months at about 5 rides a week.  It's really holding up great!

Enjoy!

// Head mount camera and some music from my original project 'A Persuasive Reason'

// Chest mount @ the Quarry - beginning leg over rock pile and narrow bridge

29er / CS-MB01 Update
« on: December 14, 2016, 02:20:50 PM »
Hey guys,

It's been a few since I posted.  But I've had a chance to put a butt load of miles on the bike and through some serious torture, especially for an XC Hardtail.

I'm actually in 5th place on Strava at the Quarry where most of the elite riders here go to train.  It's pretty brutal for Florida, cypress knees, muddy areas, loads of rocks and boulders, vertical drops, jumps, and since it's a quarry, our trails traverse up and down the mounds that have been there for years.  Super technical and quite dangerous to ride.

The frame has been holding up great!  I got the wheels, seat post, bars, and headset from Peter as well.  I am experiencing a little creaking in the headset although it's tight, but its the NECO $15 one, so I imagine the tolerances are not exact.  A may put a little carbon grease in where the bearings touch the frame and see if that stops it.  Just a little annoying, thats all.

I've had some pretty good crashes too.  One caused my handlebar to spin around and my shifter clipped the top tube which now has a small crack.  However, Ive ridding the Quarry 4 times since the crash and the crack is stable and not growing.  My repair kit came in today and I'll take some time in the new year to do the repair and document it.  That's a whole different subject in itself....

I am very satisfied with the frame at this point and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an aggressive hard tail.  After Christmas, I'll have my GoPro cameras in hand and will post some video for you guys as well so you can get some idea of the torture I am putting the bike through.

Hope all is well for everyone and have a great Holiday and New Year!

Component Deals & Selection / Brakes: Hope Tech 3 X2 vs Deore XT M8000
« on: September 25, 2016, 12:16:16 PM »
As I am getting parts on order and checking my budget, I could potentially squeeze enough for the Hope Tech 3 X2 from Chain Reaction Cycles.  This will be my first set of hydraulics, so I was wondering if it's worth going the extra $120+/- dollars?

I've watched videos on how to bleed both brakes and it seems the Hope Tech may be easier, and doesn't require any special funnel or other proprietary items.  This would come in handy if I am traveling and don't have that stuff with me.

Also, they come in colors which is nice.

Any thoughts on performance and upkeep comparisons?

Just wanted to let everyone know I found a few interesting things with r2-bike.com.

The site gives you different pricing based on your sign in state.  If you just visit the site and compare the prices and convert Euros to dollars, they don't seem to be any better than many of the other sites.  However, once you login the pricing drops on certain items.

Once I did this, I was able to see about a 57 Euro discount on the group set I was looking at (Gx).  However the brakes t (XT) didn't change much, so I ordered them domestically.

They shipped the next day and I have my DHL tracking number.  Seems they have better deals on certain manufacturers, but it's worth checking into.

Just and FYI for anyone shopping components....

Component Deals & Selection / iFX Aluminum crankset from Aliexpress
« on: September 16, 2016, 10:54:11 PM »
These are really cheap, but does anyone know anything about them?  I need to replace cranks on an older bike.  This will fit the BSA 68mm.   Just curious if anyone has tried them. Looks a lot like a Shimano knockoff.

29er / CS-MB01 ordered... It has begun!!!!!!!
« on: September 14, 2016, 12:16:26 PM »
Well, I pulled the trigger on this frame, wheels, bar, and seat post from Peter @ xmcarbonspeed.com.  Due to the Chinese holiday and the fact that Peter is headed to Interbike in Las Vegas on the 18th,  Some stuff is shipping before, but the wheels have to be built and wont ship until later.  No big deal though... We have had sooooo much rain here all the trails are flooded.

So here is what I have for specs.  Pretty sure I found a SRAM solution I can afford.

Frame CS-MB01 (carbonspeed)
Flat Bar B7 (carbonspeed)
Seat Post SP7 (carbonspeed)
Wheelset (carbonspeed)
Rims: YHR930C rims 32/32H UD matt :  http://www.xmcarbonspeed.com/Productinfo.asp?f=1428
Hubs: Novatec D771/D772 hubs 32/32H for 100x15/142x12
Spokes: Sapim D-Light spokes
Nipples: Sapim self-securing nipples

Fork: Fox Float 32 Factory SC (Step Cast) No remote.
Stem: Origin8 (from amazon)
Pedals: Shimano 737 Vintage (on my current bike).
Saddle: Carbon GUP 1153
Tires: Specialized Ground Control 2.3
Grips: Probably RaceFace Half Nelsons

Crankset: SRAM GX 175mm 34 tooth
Chain: SRAM
Trigger Shifter: SRAM x1 11 speed
Cassette: SRAM GX level
Derailleur: SRAM GX

Normally, I'd be going crazy waiting on everything to come in, but with the excessive rain, it's not that fun to ride now anyway so it's all good.

I'll add pics and send details as components arrive.  ;D

29er / 45 or 51mm fork rake for CS-MB01
« on: September 13, 2016, 03:36:08 PM »
So I pulled the trigger today on this frame, wheels and other goodies from Peter.  I am planning to go with the Fox 32 Factory SC fork.  However, I am not sure which would be the appropriate rake for this fork.

As a rider, I'm a between sizer for frame so I went with the 17".  I am wondering since the head tube angle is 71, if I should go with the 51?  Seems Trek Genesis 2 geometry call for the 51 as standard.

Any thoughts on this?

[EDIT Title]
Oops,  I meant to type 45 instead of 49.

However, after much research, I have come to the conclusion that the 51mm in most cases will be the better option for most frames with steeper head tube angles.  Generally greater than 69.5.  However as all of you know, the full geometry plays into the ride and twitch, so it becomes a bigger conversation.... Kinda like crank arm length, especially if you look at mtbr.com.  It really comes back to more rider experience and trial and error.

Just a quick question on this.

So I've decide to go Shimano due to pricing, and I found a set with the crank mentioned in the subject which is a 148 Boost from what I understand.  I did a bit of research and found the hubs I have chosen are the D772 which is not boost.  After reading a few articles, I would seem that what I will need to do to properly align my crank ring, which is as simple as installing spacers to offset the ring.  I found this information on the following page: http://www.oneupcomponents.com/pages/understanding-chainline-for-optimal-1x-conversions-boost-and-non-boost

Is this correct or do I need to be concerned about compatibility issues?

[UPDATE]
Never mind,  I figured this issue out.  Boost hubs are in the new 148mm standard axle.  The frame I'm ordering on Tuesday is 142, so it's not an issue.  The component group has the ability to upgrade, but it's actually a standard config, not boost.  So I am all good.

29er / 29er Frame sizing question
« on: September 10, 2016, 04:44:44 PM »
So my current bike is a 26er 19" frame. Fits OK, but I'm 5'10" and I feel like I'm on the cusp between a 17" and 19".  Going up to the larger size wheel, I am thinking some of the advantages for me on a 17" would be a slightly better standover height, and a slightly shorter reach, which would be good since I have back problems.  Also, a 400mm seat post should get my saddle more than high enough.  Right now my current one is just over 1/3 out of the seat tube.

Anyone see any flaws in this logic?
