The Un-Official Guide To Fixing Headset Play - Please Add Your Advice Here Hey Everyone,

I wanted to create a guide to help troubleshoot headset play regardless of bike brand. By no means am I an expert, and I hope others can add to this thread. Please understand this guide/thread isn't intended for airing our bike brand grievances or calling out user errors. Ultimately we all just want our bikes to work as intended.

Common Reasons For Headset Play

1. Steerer/Fork isn't cut low enough, or an extra spacer is required above the stem to properly compress the top cap. When initially cutting the steer tube, an extra 2-4mm below the cut line needs to be accounted for in order for the top cap to recess properly.

2. The headset bearing (upper or lower) doesn't sit inside the head tube cup snug enough (laterally, front to back). Velobuild, for example, provides 52mm diameter headset bearings. Other headsets sold online or for other bike brands may only be 51.8mm diameter. That 0.2mm is the difference between a snug fit or loose headset. If your bearings are loose this will always cause play. You can add a couple layers of tape inside the bearing cup to prevent the bearing from moving around. Or just buy a new 52mm headset.

3. The top headset bearing is recessed too far into the head tube cup, causing the headset cover to rub on the frame, preventing the complete headset stack to properly compress. If this is the case you will need a thicker headset bearing (7mm, 7.5mm or 8mm thick) or a thicker c-ring so that it sits flush with the top of the headset opening on the frame, thus preventing the headset cover from rubbing the frame. EDIT: Another resolution is adding some micro spacers between the c-ring and top cap.

4. The upper and lower headset bearings are installed in reverse. Some bikes (like Yoeleo's recent G21 gravel bike) provide a set of headset bearings, with one of the two bearings being slightly thicker than the other. The thicker of the two bearings needs to be installed on top of the head tube, and the thinner bearing on the bottom. If these two bearings are installed in reverse order then...see Common Issue #3

It is critical to do a dry run of installing the crown race, headset bearings, c-ring, headset cap, stem/cockpit, and any additional spacers before actually proceeding to building up the bike. Also be sure to compare and inspect the two headset bearings to confirm they are in fact the same size and thickness.

Re: Perfect Shift/Brake Lever Alignment and Symmetry Here's a cheap one  8)

I position the brake hoods on the handlebars, so that they are in a horizontal extension from the top of the handlebars.

Then I take a piece of string.
And I place it horizontally at the base of the top of the brake hood, and by parallax with the handlebars, I can see if they are at the same height.
Otherwise, I raise or lower one of the two brake hoods.

Then I measure the distance from the tip of the brake hood to, for example, the opposite side where the stem attaches to the handlebars.
It should be identical on both sides.
Otherwise, I rotate one of the brake hoods inward or outward.

Re: Which Disc-Wheels??? 65 mm height / Tubeless / min. 21 mm innerwidth / TA I have the elite edge wheels but the 50mm variant. Only done approx 400km so far but they have been flawless.

Weight is as advertised and very impressive for the cost.

Happy to answer any specific questions.

Re: Hygge Aero Carbon Frame the thing is that most Chinese frame/bike builders are not able to take aesthetic pictures of their products.

The angles of the finished bikes are always so bad... it looks like the handlebars are pointing like a pretzel towards the sky...

... yes - and yours look just fantastic ;-)

They could fly you in as a photographer and pay you handsomely (in whatever form) - you seem to like your work.

Re: Yishun R086-D Aero Road Here is my first look video I uploaded last week, in case anyone missed it. So far I've ridden around 350mi/560km. It's a fantastic. This past weekend I took it out for a 85 mile ride and it performed exactly as I expected. Smooth and fast.

The headtube length is measured without the headset integration because...this is the standard way to measure. The headset stack adds 60mm minimum if you don't use extra spacers. Looking at my bike position below, it's a pretty aggressive but sustainable setup. But it's mainly due to my long arms relative to my legs and torso, rather than trying to be super aero.

EDIT: The headset bearing cup is recessed 15mm into the headtube. So while the overall headset stack of 60mm is pretty tall for a "slammed" stem, Yishun made considerations for this which is why they recessed the headtube. Basically the headstack is effectively more like 45mm which is very comparable stack to my Winspace T1500 and 2022 Allez Sprint. And the headtube measurement is more like 145mm rather than 130mm for a size 54.

Re: Consensus on replica frames ??
That said, I have seen a fake Pinarello Dogma trying to be passed off as the real thing on a resale site; which was only clear after a friend wasted his time going to see it and noticed some suspicious discrepancies. That’s seriously uncool.

I second that. I own and ride a replica (VB R218). Pinarello certainly hasn’t lost a customer in me as I’m not even remotely in the market for their price range of bikes. But I did shy away from the used market partly because of this. Lots of counterfeits out there and people try to sell them off as legit ones. That’s really not cool. And I’d never put Pinarello decals on my replica nor would I tell anyone it’s real.

Re: Consensus on replica frames ??
An open mold is usually a little more expensive. But, because it's a clean sheet design, they are going to design it in CAD and run the basic FEA stuff and use the results to iterate the design. They have both a good understanding of where / how to adjust the layup and the freedom to change tube shapes to get the performance they are looking for.

No they're not? Velobuild for instance sells pretty much all their frames at the exact same price point, open molds, replicas, half replicas like the VB168 and so on. You're implying a lot of things here that again go back to my point exactly: It depends who you're buying from. Sure, the more money is involved, the better the knowledge of the people behind the product and therefore its quality. Hopefully anyway. But saying that open mold designers in general "have a good understanding" of the intricacies of frame design is a generalization you cannot really make IMO. There's probably a lot of sellers out there that did not design the frame or they might not even have produced it. And they might not be transparent about it. So there's more to the story IMO.

I take you point though that making something work that you did not design yourself might pose a few traps that these companies do not necessarily see coming. The question then again is how they handle it. I chose VB for this reason and luckily was not disappointed by their customer service when I needed it. Would I have bought a Pinarello badged frame from whatever seller on Aliexpress? Hell no. Would I buy another VB268? In a heartbeat. But just because it's a really nice riding bike and I like the looks of it. I couldn't care less how it compares to the real thing.

Re: Patty's Long Rant and Guide To Affordable Frames Is there anyone else on here who just rides for fitness? I actually don't follow bike brands, components, etc. as long as it's functional and hits a target price point. I just try to make sure my bike fit is good, mechanics are pristine and weight+aero positioning is optimized. I'd rather focus on nutrition, rest recovery, cardio and strength training. Plus I guess I'm more down the rabbit hole than most, since I can take advantage of questionable weight limited components and smaller/stiffer bike frames. I somewhat enjoy trying obscure and unknown bike frames/parts!
