Component Deals & Selection / Re: Elliptical Chainrings. Thoughts?
« on: June 24, 2016, 09:30:47 AM »
Yes and no.  I did go up to the 34 on purpose, as I wanted more gear.  Overall going to a 32 oval is still going to be a 32.  It allows you to put more power down in the strong part of the stroke.

Either way, yes I knew I was going to a bigger gear.  Some of my reasoning came after I had been riding my road bike in the dirt, which only has a low gear or 38 front 32 rear.....  so I figured 34 front 42 rear would be fine.

Maybe this can eventually be made into a sticky once more info shows up.

I wanted to share some Axle info/experience.

I've had my 057 for almost 2 year now, have I would say, about 850 miles on it.  These are not easy miles, I'm about 220lbs "dry", have done some sprint races, 1 or 2, 20+ mile races and the rest just fun riding miles.  As some have seen, while not rooty and muddy, like East coast, it's dry, rutty, rocky out here, and I ride the same stuff I would on my Santa Cruz TallBoy LT, just a little slower.

From day 1 I've been using the axles supplied with the bike from Peter while at XMIPlay.  Both axles I've had come loose during a ride on me, the rear a couple times.  The front was maybe operator error, but the rear I know was set tight before heading out.  In addition to the axles coming loose, I've also had issues with the 12mm adaptors on my hubs (Novatex D882sb) coming loose.  During my race last week, both axle and adaptor loosened up enough that I began having shifting issues and probably 1-2mm play in the rear wheel.

After this, I decided to resolve this issue once and for all and get a better axle.  I did a bunch of research and decided it would be DT Swiss, now the question was which one.....

The axle that I came up with as the solution is the DT Swiss RWS E-Thru.  This axle "appears" to include the nut.  I am in process of confirming, but when I originally received the axle it did NOT have a nut.  I contacted the vendor and they promptly supplied a nut, as mentioned I'm confirming if it's supposed to come with a nut or if they just supplied it to make good.

That said the supplied nut is nice, has 4 grooves, each the perfect size for the set screw to lock into.  I never had good luck locking down the China nut with the set screw.  The 4 grooves don't go all the way across, but stop short on the inner end allowing the set screw to lock the nut in place to prevent rotation, but also pulling out.

Here's what I ordered, and will update once I get confirmation if it was supposed to come with the nut or not.

After some more time on the Absolute Black Oval 34t, here are some more thoughts.

Maybe, I'm not strong enough to push the 34.....  I haven't gone back to the round 32, but there are times I wonder if I'd be faster with the 32 as I find I just can't push as hard as I'd like.  Now, I'm not running out of gear, and I'm keeping my cadence averages 76rpm on a 10 mile, 12.7 mph race.  I haven't trained much, so maybe if I could spin closer to 85rpm with a smaller gear I'd actually be faster overall???

Also, I am noticing some Oval effect now, in that I get clunking as I spin because my pedal speed can't keep up with the cassette speed.  Again, not sure if this would or wouldn't happen with a round ring, or a smaller ring.

But that's my input to date.  On the plus side, as would be expected, no dropped chains or anything....

Sales & Classifieds / Re: DT Swiss RWS 15 Thru Axle (15x100 Front)
« on: June 24, 2016, 12:38:18 AM »
It's a front axle, not designed to take the place of a rear E-through axle.  It worked fine with my Rockshox Reba fork.

I get that, sorry, was relating experience purchasing a rear axle at the same time.

Questions are, what is the thread and length?  I have Carbon Rigid fork, using china supplied axle currently.  So I would need to find a compatible nut to work with it.

Resurrection of an old thread......

What did you thread these as?  M12x 1.75?

Would you be able to make some in M12 x 1.5 to fit the DT Swiss axle?  I ordered the one that was supposed to have a nut, but did not get a nut, Vendor is supposedly shipping another axle, but I'll see how that arrives.

Need some solution, axle came lose during a race last week...

What is the thread?  Do you know if this will work on a standard China Rigid fork?  Will it use the China axle nut?

I just bought a DT Swiss E-Thru rear, did not come with a nut, but Jensen is supposed to ship another with a nut....  I hope.

3 more races to go.  I think this week will be this same course again, probably with a minor tweak in the finish section.  Then two more races in a different section of this park.

I haven't really been able to train as I've been in the middle of remodeling bathrooms, so the wife gets on my case when I'm not doing house work.

I grew up and started biking in Massachusetts, so I know about the different terrain, and kinda miss the riding where there are trees, etc.

Speaking of the cactus, there was a night race a year or so ago, that a guy went down in a cactus and had a giant hunk stuck to his arm.  Didn't really look fun!!!!

Oh and because we are in the land of super cool stuff, we occasionally have people like Tinker Juarez and Ned Overend show up.  Ned was actually at this past race, running Expert Masters of course, so I never saw him, which is actually cool, because that means I didn't get lapped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Race that I did this past Thursday evening.  Wish I was a stronger climber, but I pace myself so I don't burn out on the first lap.  Problem is I get stuck behind people that are stronger climbers, but have much less technical ability.  Even on a Full Rigid, I'm faster than most of the guys and gals around me, but I think they are mostly roadies, so they climb well, but hold me up when things get technical.

I end up making a bad line choice and pushed further off when the guy in front of me bails on the climb right near the top, forcing me into a section with a stair step right at the top causing me to fall backwards.  Didn't land on my Ass, but came off the bike, nearly knocked the guy next to me down, but made a quick recovery.

Interesting.

Wonder what the weight is?  Although the one listed for sale is a 170 crank, I'd want a 175.

29+ & 27+ / Re: What Frame is this???
« on: June 04, 2016, 01:38:19 AM »
So far I haven't been able to find it.  My current plan if my father is interested in a build is to go with a CS-001 frame, but build with a 27.5 + rear wheel/tire and 27.5+ front fork and tire.

We are in sunny San Diego, so no need for a full fat, but the Plus is pretty nice.

Now to see if Peter can just build a CS-001 with a Boost rear triangle instead of 177...

I have the Lizard Skins medium, but the large might be better fit.

I actually like the look of the Lezyne guard better, but they didn't have them in stock at my LBS when I did my build.

Fat Bikes / Re: Looking for input on rigid chiner fatty build
« on: June 03, 2016, 07:09:15 PM »
I second the Plus over Fat.

I personally have a 29er Full Rigid 057 and a Full Suspension Santa Cruz Tallboy LT 29er with 5.25" Travel.  I had the chance last fall to rent a Rigid Fat bike for a week while in Minnesota, and wished I'd had my Full Rigid 29er instead.   While the Fat bike was fun and did do some things better, I felt the trade off of excess rolling resistance was not worth the gains in plushness and stability.  For the most part the trails I rode there were well groomed hard pack single track.  They did have some rock, log and other built features that were quite fun and easy on the Fat bike, that I probably would have been more hesitant to ride on the rigid 29er.

That said, I recently took a Rocky Mtn Pipeline 27.5 Plus full suspension for a short ride and thought it pretty much the best of both worlds.  It doesn't roll as fast as the 29er, but is much faster than the Fat bike.  The big tires and on this bike 150mm front travel, 130mm rear travel made for a very, VERY confidence inspiring ride once you got pointed downhill or into anything technical, rocky, etc.

I'm in the process of convincing my Dad into a new bike and have him convinced a 27.5+ is the way to go.  We just need to find the right size, etc.  Not sure he will go with a Name Brand or China, but if we do a China build the front runner is actually the CS-001, while a Full Suspension Fat, we would build it as 27.5+, because it appears to have geometry closest to all the current Name Brand Plus Bikes.

Now, staying in Full Rigid Plus frame, I haven't searched which specific, but that would give you the "efficiency" of the full rigid, but soften things up a bit when you head off road into some dirt.

free uploader The crown race slides on without any effort, seems little loose. thought it should be really tight, is this ok?

With the split ring design, it will never be "tight".  I guess they can work, but certainly not prefered.  I had a split washer type that came OEM on my Santa Cruz TallBoy LT, I could never get the headset to stay tight, so I replaced the entire thing with a King headset, now now worries at all.  The original Cane Creak headset had a bunch of plastic pieces in it.  Not sure what the actual culprit was, but I'm much happier with the King, so much that I ordered another one for my Road Bike.  I guess I'm at an age and financial position that I can just drop some coin to have the best of some things.  Maybe not everything, but when talking $40 vs $140, I can do the $140.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: New System for Tubeless Sealant
« on: June 01, 2016, 05:53:31 PM »
Major problem with this system, especially for Orange Seal, is that the small tube will clog up with the good bits.  IE. "Nano Particles"  = Glitter, that is used to clog larger leaks.

I put in extra glitter every time I fill up my tires and I know it would certainly clog up that small of a tube.

Overall good idea, except the clogging issue.
