Title: Random tools/clothes/one-off gadgets you recommend buying from Aliexpress?
Post by: hal9e3 on October 01, 2021, 08:30:44 AM
Just curious if you guys have any personal favorites on random/cheap cycling things to get from Aliexpress as I shop around anyway.

Stuff like chain checkers, link tools, torque wrenches? Cycling clothes/gadgets?

My personal favorite Cycling Duck : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000077976267.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.61e04396zHnApc&algo_pvid=f20a4997-0950-4b13-98de-560a11e8630c&algo_exp_id=f20a4997-0950-4b13-98de-560a11e8630c-0&pdp_ext_f=%7B%22sku_id%22%3A%2210000000202057401%22%7D

This rechargeable helmet light. Small enough not to be bothersome on the your helmet. Front light is usable, perfect as backup. Rear light is very good. What I love most about it is the Power ON button. One click to cycle arount front light's settings. And double-click to cycle around rear light setting. So you can combine different setting for front & rear light.

If you look around, you'll find it stamped with other brand names. Some cheaper, some more expensive but they're all the same product.

Do you have any safety concerns with the possibility of this compromising the helmet in a crash,? If you are unlucky enough to fly off and hit the top of the helmet while something like this is strapped on... I don't want to know what would happen.

Safety aside, looks pretty cool haha

Bought some stuff from X-Tiger recently I am fairly happy with

X-Tiger Cycling glasses, with photochrome and polarized lenses

Lightweight, good-looking (to me anyways) with a lot of different lens options

X-Tiger Winter Cycling Kit

Fleece lined jersey and bib set.  Good on its own at around 5 to 10 degrees C.  Would need another thin layer under jersey for freezing temps.
The chamois is think and dense.  So far the best I've used (Chinese branded or otherwise)

I go with the logic that if I can see much better and improve the chances that I'd be seen at night, then the chance of crashing on something strap to my helmet is significantly decrease. Plus, the light can easily be mounted or removed, so I only attached it during the dark when needed. With that, I rather have it than worry about crashing on the wrong side of my helmet.

I also reckon that little ducky would crumple or dislodge in a bad crash anyways.
Considering how many people strap a GoPro to a helmet, I imagine any safety compromise is offset by your increased situational awareness
