That’s my line of thinking too.  2 weeks ago I priced out individual parts for a 12spd Ultegra mini group (w/o crankset, chain or cassette) at about 1000.00.  That was looking across several different websites and looking for sales.

On Aliexpress I found 105 Di2 for 8-850.00

Agree. I'm seeing around $900 USD for a complete 105 di2 groupset shipped. I really cant see the value proposition for EDS road at the current stated price of about $700 EUR. Essentially equal in price since im sure you could sell the 105 crank and cassette locally for $150-200. There would only be a few reasons i can see for buying it: Wanting to use it on a 10/11/13 speed cassette, looking for lighter weight, want true wireless, or want for rim brake.

I was initially thinking about getting this after longer term reviews came in this summer/fall but only if the cost comes down to about $500USD. Any higher then that and I will go with 105 di2 after this cycling season

Interested in something like this as well but more so as a one off for my farsports wheels. I’d like to add a unique decal/logo for my wheels while also adding a little bit of colour to the wheels to match the frame

Edit: I realize it’s more mtb specific but I think a lot of what is discussed there can be applied to the road discussion as well

Any update on the paint issues or did you just leave it?

I think it all depends on the “look” you are going for and how much you want to plan to spend on all things that aren’t the frame. It would depend on the total build cost. If you’re looking for a “budget” build around the 2-3k mark then open mold would probably be the way to go and get a nice bike. If you’re planning to spend 5k+ on a bike, I would rather get a specialized/cervelo frameset and build it up. Another scenario to look at is if you’re someone that sells your bike after a couple years then you could resell a bike with shimano/specialized parts for way more then open mold / Ltwoo. Yes you may spend a bit more on the western brand after reselling both but probably not by that much.

I don't see myself buying a mainstream brand frameset, because I'm not a bleed hard cyclist. I don't care for brand legacy, I don't watch or participate in cycling as a sport and I'm neither a crit bro/gravel hipster. I build my bikes to meet my performance needs and price point. All I care about is becoming stronger and going from point A to point B faster than the last time. Bikes are just exercise and transportation for me.

Wouldn’t you be better off by buying a $500 décathlon bike then?

I've got the Ultegra from the same store, but this link: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005173524508.html
Been ~1.500km by now and all is good, not any issue with it, but it's too soon. The finishing is rough so that got me concerned, I've seen plenty of 'fake vs original' videos for these pedals but honestly couldn't come to a conclusion, all seemed ok but it's really the finishing and little details that have something off about it, but it could be just a different Shimano factory, for example

in the end, what I can say by now, is that they're working well. Since here in Brazil I can only get Ultegras (original from distributor) by 4-5x the price, I figured it was worth the gamble.

My previous pedals were R550 which were bought from local store but, at the price I've paid, for sure it was just reselling from Aliexpress. And those I'm pretty sure were just really good counterfeits, at 25.000km they were done (the axis and ball bearing started to present issues I couldn't solve)
Still, it was a good run for the price I've paid at the time, so not really mad about it

but, depending where you are, better to just go with Merlin's option like our friend above shared, at least it's guaranteed it's original
$94 USD right now at Merlin and they ship a lot quicker.

Merlin cycles price seems good. I’m in Canada so shipping adds a bit to it. Think I will look for a legit reseller outside of Ali and hopefully can get something for $100 usd or under total price

Any experience buying shimano spd-sl pedals from Ali? I’m thinking about buying this Ultegra level pedals and the reviews seem promising. Locally they’re about $220 usd so this would be quite the bargain.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: Chinese cycling clothes

I have a pair of aero socks from ykykw. After about 20 wears the silicone seems to not be as good and it does not stay up on my legs  too well. Could also be that I have hairy legs lol

Zero friction cycling who is an independent tester has found YBN chains to be really good, almost equivalent to dura ace. From everything I can tell about the testing he does for both chains and lubricants, he seems very trustworthy. Main concern now is to get a real YBN or shimano chain for a decent deal. Not really interested in a KMC chain.

12
Can someone send me an aliexpress link to stores selling legit YBN 11 speed chains please.

I recently bought a shimano 11s chain as a backup from Ali and am only now realizing it’s a fake. I bought it from “preference cycling store” who had pretty good reviews for the chain but looks like the people reviewing it are not able to tell. The key giveaways were that the check mark at the front of the box on the bottom is printed (should be done by hand) and the quick link is in the same package as the chain (should be separate). I’ve read some good stuff about YBN chains, so I think I will give that a try instead

I've had some communication with Wing at Carbonda. To be fair to them they've been pretty good with emails. We've agreed to watch the situation and see whether the crack increases or not. I've marked the edges of the line so I can see if it's grown in size. At some stage I will take it to our local MTB park and thrash it around some trails. If that doesn't kill it (or me) then I'll not worry about it too much. It would be a real shame to scrap the frame as I do really like it. If I had to replace it I think I'd go for the Orbea Terra H30 alloy frameset as it's a similar colour scheme (the Orbea is a shade or two darker but still pops in the sun). Anyway, that's a topic for another thread/forum.

Since your carbon repair dude already stated it’s a crack, are you not worried about a complete failure while riding? Seems like it could really throw you of if you were riding and could cause serious injury

I’ve been using ride now for the past couple of months. Overall happy but have already gotten 3 flats. 1st time was a tiny one. Second time was immediately after which I later found out was my fault because a tiny metal wire pierced the tire for the 1 flat and stayed logged in the tire causing it to pierce the new tube. I should have checked the tire first before replacing the tube. 3rd time was I hit a pothole too hard with an under inflated tire. I think having the gp5000 also have caused part of the issues but for me tpu is not as puncture proof as butyl even though I thought I read that somewhere.

Very sorry this happened and I'm glad the only damage was to the post and not you.
I have three Elita seatposts and love them. I've definitely used, abused and even overtorqued some of my Elitas without issue. I've actually cut mine as well, and I'm a couple kgs heavier than you. I want to say you may have gotten a dud and I hope they take care of you after this.

Thanks, I’ve decided to get a refund and they told me itll take a few days through Ali. I’m a bit shook right now with the snapping and how the entire situation could have been a lot worse if I was in a group ride. Very likely could be that I got a dud but just not going to risk it. I’m thinking to either save up to buy the canyon seatpost or just stick with alloy.
