Re: Designing a custom titanium frame - gravel mountain adventure bike Regarding the 3M bathroom tape, it comes in 2 varieties, clear & opaque dark gray. You'll want the clear one.

Also, my dropper post protector is D.I.Y. using the same bathroom tape. And I have been using it for close to 3 years already.

ZTTO 54T Star Rachet upgrade kit for DT Swiss hubs I just upgraded my DT Swiss 350 boost hub's 18T rachets with ZTTO 54T rachets. The ZTTO's cost me around US$32.60, comes with a pair of 54T rachets & a pair of springs. No special grease. I bought it from Lazada, it's our local equivalent of Ali-Express. Actually a lot of Ali-Express vendors are also there.

For about a third of the DT Swiss upgrade kit... well, we'll know if it's worth it a few months from now. Pics below of weight & some comparisons. Vendor's weight was pegged at 16.5 grams for rachets & springs. My scale showed 18 grams. DT Swiss 18T rachets & springs from my hubs we're 27 grams. 9 grams difference. For pics 4 & 5, I placed the 54T on top of the 18T to see if the 'grooves' aligns. Not perfect but they went in the hubs just fine. The upgrade was quite easy.

I wanted to put a video comparing the sound/noise of 18T & 54T but my cellphone's had problems picking up the sound.

Will update after a hundred kilometers. Oops, I mean after a thousand kilometers.

Re: Mountain bike idiot wants to build a cyclocross bike I'd recommend clearance for tire widths to be a few mm wider than your intended tire size. Gives you some room to mount at least fenders plus better mud clearance... even if you don't need them.

Rims, 20-21mm inner is sufficient. I have 2.25 slapped on my DT Swiss XR331 (i20) with no problems.

For my Waltly gravel bike, I had them put racks & fender mounts as I see myself doing some bikepacking. You might consider it if you want.

If you're gonna be on paved road most of the time, perhaps a rigid carbon fork might be more useful. With weight saving bonus.

Re: ZTTO 54T Star Rachet upgrade kit for DT Swiss hubs Finally got a thousand kilometers (1,015km to be exact) on the ZTTO DT Swiss Star Rachet 54T upgrade kit. Took me longer as it had been raining the past couple of weeks and cutting my rides few & short. Anyway here's the results.

As you can see from the picture, the outer edges of the ratchet showed some wear. You can see the color changed from silver to bronze. For comparison, refer to pictures on the original post, the 18T rachet had seen pretty much close to a thousand kilometers as well before the upgrade. The springs are pretty much unaffected. Performance is still very good and unaffected by the wear.

Is it worth the US$32.60? To be honest, I've never seen a used original DT Swiss 54T Star Rachet to make that answer. And judging from the wear, I'm probably going to get a few more thousand kilometers from it. But at that price, you can probably get 3 upgrade kits as compared to only 1 from DT Swiss. So I'll leave the decision to you.

So there it is. The thousand-kilometers review of the ZTTO DT Swiss 54T Star Rachet upgrade kit.

REVIEW: ZTTO Single Speed Conversion Kit I converted my gravel bike to a single speeder last July 2020. But let's backtrack a bit more.

Where I lived, SS conversion kit wasn't easy to find. In fact I didn't found any. I've scoured a dozen LBS for a couple of months and still couldn't find one and it's not even COVID related. I did came across one Fixed Gear shop but they only got fixed gear specific. So that's also out. I've contacted some bike shops in another city, they're out of stock (COVID related). And US-based shop have shipping difficulties due to COVID. Short story, Ali-Express to the rescue. Cost me just under US$20 per SS Kit. Comes with spacers, cog & lockring. You can buy their chain tensioner with a kit or separately. I didn't get the tensioner 'coz my frame had a horizontal dropout. In comparison, Surly, my first option was $40 spacer & lockring set, $30 cassette cog. I got 3 ZTTO kits, 16T, 18T, 20T. I wasn't sure if I will be good with a 16T or 18T but the 20T was for the mtb, which will probably be later this year. So 3 ZTTO kits for the price of 1 Surly kit... it's a no brainer even if stocks were available. At the time I got it, it only came in purple. And I eventually spend more purplelizing (if that's even a word) my bike.

The review... I've installed the 18T and you'll be happy to know that I got around 3,000km on it. I've paired it with 3 chainrings, depending on my rides. A 40T round and a couple of ovals, 36T & 42T. I've done gravel rides, muddy rides, roads (a few century & a double century) and even some light trails. Got rained on and even rode beside the sea. And I think you all know when the hills come, single speeders are gonna have to mashed it up. Suffice to say, it was ABUSED. Pictures 1-3 is the unused 16T and Picture 4 is the abused 18T. Doesn't look abused... do I need say more? That one 3,000km picture is enough to say it is worth more than what it costs.

And it now comes in red. Oh, btw, they are aluminum.

Re: REVIEW: ZTTO Single Speed Conversion Kit
What is up with the chain in that second photo?
Looks like a nice setup.

Shimano CN-NX01, a 1/2x1/8 chain for SS/Fixed Gear biked. Also known as 'olive chains'.

Re: looking for ready made Ti frames. There aren't that many titanium bike frame builders in China, not unlike carbon fiber frame manufacturers, so I added a couple from Taiwan. There's also one in Hong Kong, Titan something, Tito Titanium seems to be one of their brand. No idea if they're the same with the Taiwanese Titan Super Bond (see below) though.

Titan Super Bond Co., Ltd. (Taiwan)

XACD (China)

ORA Engineering (Taiwan)

I have no experience with any of these companies but ORA Engineering is (from my recent readings) considered to be one of the best (some say THE best) in the world. But don't quote me on that.

Re: Waltly Ti gravel - dropped seatstay and fat tubes - in progress
- Weight: 1.95kg with thru-axle. Quite heavy, probably would be lighter if I didn't use such wide tubes :)

The weight is pretty much at par with my 2 Waltly Ti frames (29er mtb & gravel bike). Both are just under 2kg. I believe the weight is more because they are using thicker tubes, 0.9mm Iirc. I have a few friends who owns Lynskeys & Litespeed titanium bikes that are around 1.5kg frame weight, I've tap their frames & they are noticeably thinner tubes. Another friend with a Salsa titanium frame was actually heavier than my Waltly frames simply because it was 2 sizes bigger than mine but pretty much the same tube thickness.

I've emailed Amy (my Waltly contact) last week and she said the current turn around time is 3-4 months. It used to be just 45days. I remember by frames were actually ready for shipping just under 45days.

Re: Electronic devices I'm using...

IGPSport IGS50E
https://www.igpsport.com/bike-computers
I've used this for about 2 years now. I'm not exactly someone who uses the data to plot out some scheduling for rides or to monitor my exercise or something. So this is simple and more than sufficient for my use.

And Magene H64 Heart Rate Monitor
Only been using this since Sep or Oct. 2020. I only use it as a warning device not to hit a certain heart rate. If I see I'm approaching that figure, I simply shift down to an easier gear or take a rest.

Both devices connects seamlessly with each other.

How accurate are they? To be honest, I don't know. The IGPSport is consistently recording shorter distances (just a small fraction) compared to my Sony Experia cp running Relive. But viewing all those YouTube videos reviews or bikepackers about their cyclocomputers and cp apps, everyone is saying none of their apps/devices showed the same data. Suppose to be I can choose to connect Relive with a cyclocomputer but I just never tried to. No particular reasons, I just use them simultaneously but independently. My phone (with Relive app) is usually in my pocket. The iGPSport is visible on the handlebar. Here's a sample data of both device, same trip. These are the key differences.

                        iGPSport     Relive
Distance          16.9km      17.3km
Max Speed      29.4kph     38.2kph
Ave. Speed      15.3kph     12.1kph
AST                   52m           283m
Time                 moving      trip duration

Distance: iGPSport always came shorter than Relive. It doesn't bother me much.

Speed: This really bugged me. The difference is quite significant. During rides, I follow iGPSport but when sharing my rides on FB it's the Relive video I use.

Elevation: iGPSport is the right one, I calibrated it but I never did calibrated my cellphone for elevation. So I'm inclined to believe that my Relive Speed might be affected (although unfounded).

I didn't bother with the time as they record it differently. The iGPSport records only moving time, while Relive records the entire trip (from pressing Start to pressing Finish button, I didn't set it to auto-pause). I do like to have both info.
