Title: Pics and geometries of Xmiplay's new fat bike frames.. The IP-010 and IP-018
Post by: Sitar_Ned on April 20, 2014, 11:43:29 AM
Just received an email announcing that their new fat bike frames are almost ready.. Here's a preview of what looks like two different fat bike frames. The pics are of the IP-018, and the geometry chart at the very bottom is for the IP-010, which looks to have slightly different geo and a sloping top tube.

Looks to be plenty of rear tire clearance;

Okay.. So a complete Chinese carbon fat bike and rims will be a possible reality a bit sooner than I expected, honestly. Def looking forward to seeing some complete builds in the coming months.

I've got $20 that says you have a full carbon fat bike within 12 months  ;D

We accept IP-018 in size 18'' and IP-010 in size 17'' frames order now, and other sizes moulds are still being produced.

Weight for IP-018 in size 18'' : 1295+/-40g
Weight for IP-010 in size 17'' : 1250+/40g

After looking around at some of the name brand carbon fat bike frames.. Those are very respectable weights indeed.

I'm not sure I would be building a Fatbike anytime soon but for me the size would be a difficult decision, I typically like the effective TT to be around 615mm.  The 18" is 605mm and the 20" is 625mm.  I would need to ride a couple fat bikes to determine which way to go, bigger or smaller.

these images look exactly like frames offered by speeder cycling. i was trying to get more info and images as the rear spacing seems odd on curved frame. they keep telling me it is 12mm x 190mm through axle. does that even exist? the specs are very minimal on the site, yet they expect you to buy it. they would not email me detailed images of rear dropouts either.

Peter, since you are selling the frames, will you be able to offer more info? xmiplay website has no sign of any fat bike products for sale.

I'm not Peter but I do have the info that you're looking for...

The IP-018 in 18'' and IP-010 in 17'' will be available in 35 days, and the rear spacing for IP-018 is 197x12 and for IP-010 is 190x12.

Hope that helps! Would love to follow the build if you feel like starting a thread.

ok, so this is what i was told. i am interested in 010 frame. need 18 or 19 though. what is puzzling to me is 190x12 rear spacing. this is not standard. i was told these frames dont come with rear axles and 190x12 axles are not available to purchase anywhere, i believe they dont even exist.

If you can't find a 190mm x 12mm axle anywhere, I would wait for Peter to have the axle available when you purchase the frame from him.

i am curious  to hear from Peter as all 190mm frames currently are traditional quick release, not thru axle.

For IP-018 frame, we make this frame for 197*12mm, and we make IP-010 frame for 190*12mm.

Fitting carbon FK-018 is made for 135x15mm

I will arrange to make fitting axles for each item as well. Just like we did for FK-052 and 142x12 frames.

Thanks guys, I will keep updating.

any ideas on max tire clearances front/rear? also, is there a clearance for bluto fork at bottomtube/headtube? looks like the fork shown on cad image shows suspension fork.

Hey kokos..

I like the idea of fat bikes but am fairly unfamiliar with them? What kind of weight could one expect to get a full carbon (frame and rims) fat bike?

Also, what about the tyres? Aren't they insanely heavy? Are companies making good progress in innovating and providing lighter tyres with tread patterns optimized for fat bike tyres and not just ported over from the smaller version of the tyre?

izzy, weight depends on build. from what i know, stock specialized fat boy is 30 pounds, people were able to reduce to 28 switching some components. this is for aluminum frame and wheels bike. so i believe with carbon you can go further below 28 lbs. which is nice. tires will matter a lot in terms of weight savings. if you going to go full fat tires 4.7" (surly bud/lou) expect havier bike. fat tires are not ported from skinnier tires, they are specifically designed as fat tires. more and more brands releasing their fat tires.

I asked the factory to make the thru axle samples for the IP-010 frame , IP-018 fat carbon frame and FK-018 carbon fat bike fork.

As soon as the frame and forks are available, I will have them to be tested, and then I will ask the factory to make the axles in black color. The IP-010 in 17'' and IP-018 in 18'' will be available in 20 days

These axles are made in same factory as the axles for 100x15 mountain bicycle fork and 142x12 thru axle frames, they are light and stiff

That's what I've been wanting. 19" IP-010.

I gotta say, looks like you guys did a great job on this frame, Peter! These frames are looking more and more refined with each new production it seems. Good job. The lines on the frame, the angles around the head tube, and on the top tube, and the way the top tube curves, make for an awesome looking frame and bike! Can't wait!

Time to go check the fat bike rim thread again..

Hey cuora,

Maybe it's early or I'm just slow but I don't quite understand the question? You mean will the 19 inch in actuality be a bigger frame than say a 19 inch 057 frame for example? Or are you asking if there are going to be more sizes available in these frames soon?

Answer to the forst one is no, and the answer to the second one is yes. I probably still didn't answer your question but I tried lol.

izzy, this frame has been available for purchase from other Chinese web stores for a while. it is basically a knock off of fatback corvus frame. i have one on order from speedercycling.

Ah ok, thanks kokos. You're right it's a pretty much exact copy. Not that that's a bad thing. Will check out the reviews for the corvus frame then. I can't tell if this pic is a digital image or an actual pic of the frame, something looks different about it. Either way, the Corvus is the obvious inspiration here. Let me rephrase then, this looks like a high quality replica. I'm glad the chiners are looking more like the high end originals. Now if the full suspension frames would just do the same (pivots, bearings, joints, etc)

Be sure to post up pics of the build and frame when you get it if you don't mind. Very interested in seeing it.

I hope they eventually come out with the IP-010 in a 21".

I have a Borealis Yampa that I like, but I keep having trouble with the QR rear hub shifting and causing the tire to rub the left chainstay.  I would like to try the IP-010 so I could move to a through axle rear at a reasonable price (I could probably sell the Borealis frame and cover the cost).

Wanting to pick up a fat frame but have 2 issues/concerns with the Chinese frames.
1. All the major US carbon frames (Corvus, 907, borealis) do a 197 rear with 100mm bottom bracket.  but all the 197mm rear Chinese frames do a 120mm bottom bracket.  It makes sense for proper chain alignment yet US companies are not doing the 120mm bottom bracket.  Does anyone notice poor chain alignment on their US frames?  maybe 1x drives fix that issue?  The 120mm BB limits the available cranksets and makes you pedal like a bowlegged cowboy, lending itself to potential injuries if putting in lots of miles.  The 190mm rear does have a 100mm but that brings me to the second issue
2. this has been mentioned but not sufficiently answered in my mind.  a 190mm rear that has a through axle?  Are there many hubs available to build off this sort of wheel?
Thanks in advance for the help

1)not all of them do. in fact i am only aware of 1 that has 120mm bb. rest of the chinese fatties,i think there are 3 of them, have 100 mm bb.
2)hub manufacturers offer caps for 190 spacing too. sarma and jade have cups for 190mm, hope can be easily converted. cheap hubs from china all come with 190mm compatible caps. no problem here at all

One nice thing about the 100mm bottom bracket is that it allows me to use the Raceface Next SL crank for a 170 hub on my 190 hub bike with the 1x direct mount chainring flipped for good chain alignment with a lower Q factor.

thanks guys for answering the 190mm rear through axle q... One more...
help me narrow the search.  What company is making a 197mm rear with a 100mm bottom bracket.  Preferably a company that is building wheels too (unless you guys want me posting a million q's on how to build wheels ;))

What's the latest here? I read that they redid the design of one or both of the frames.   What is everyone preferring? Bump to the question above.  Wheels seem to be tricky.
