GPS Bike Computer

Xoss G+
https://www.xoss.co/pages/xoss-g.html
http://aliexpress.com/item/4000971650483.html
For around 35€ a nice simple bike computer with ANT+ and Bluetooth. Supports Speed/Cadence/Heartrate Sensor.
GPS connection is okay, the GPS fix takes sometimes a bit longer (could be the place where I live), and sometimes it loses the connection while riding in the forest.

iGPSport iGS520
https://www.igpsport.com/igs520
https://aliexpress.com/item/1005001338284700.html
I bought it because I was very curious how good/bad the cheapest GPS bike computer with Navigation is. The price was around 70€.
The computer itself works great, you can connect your Powermeter, configure which data you want to see on the pages, both things the Xoss can't do.
Compared to a friends Wahoo it was also pretty accurate.
Now to the Navigation part. I only tried it with the first Firmware 1.05 (?), the current one is 1.10, which might have some improvements.
The iGS520 has no internal maps, so it only shows you the route and gives you directions when to turn, which is fine for me as I usually ride in my home area.
Route planning is done via the iGPSport app. And it sucks. You can set the waypoints on a Google Maps map, but you can't edit/move the already set waypoints anymore. It's also more road riding orientated, planning a MTB route is even worse. Last time I tried to transfer the route to the iGS520 the App went into a loop where it starts at 0% again after the upload was at 100%.
You can log into the iGPSport Website and import .gpx-Files and also create routes for your Routebook there. But if you try to upload one of these routes the app will give you an error and won't even start uploading then.
-> The navigation feature is absolutely useless. (for now?)

Edit: With Firmware 1.10 (1.20 should be coming soon?) you can at least the routes you created online or in the app, upload to the iGS 520 also works now, but on longer routes it's quite slow.

Edit again: Firmware 1.31 is now available. It has a workout mode if you have a powermeter and also has a indoor cycling feature now. Haven't tried both of them. But, and that's much important: .gpx-Import seems finally to work!

Sensors

Magene Speed/Cadence Sensor
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001096008233.html
Xoss Speed/Cadence/Heartrate Sensors
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001157509389.html
I have the Xoss Heartrate Sensor, 2 Xoss Speed/Cadence Sensors and 3 Magene Speed/Cadence Sensors.
They all work unremarkable.
The Xoss sensors have the better mounting with 2 1 thicker O-Rings, while the Magene only has one. The smaller one Magane delivers is also too small to use.
The Magene on the other hand has the better battery cap, which needs no coin to open, and is easier to put back in.

Softail titanium MTB 29/27.5+ (all mountain - bikepacking) Hello,

Who I am :
Just over 30 yo MTB rider, 177cm tall, 65 kg, I live in the French Alps.
I practiced XC, trial and dirt as a kid. I did practice pure enduro around 25 yo, but now I don't want to ride that hard anymore  :o
I mostly ride all mountain and bikepacking MTB trips. I want to climb hard, enjoy views/landscapes, have fun while downhill  8)

Few weeks ago, I had a Specialized Enduro + Orbea Alma + NS Bikes Eccentric + road bike + pumptrack bike + a titanium custom hardtail MTB with Pinion gearbox (commute / travel).

The project
Sell all my bikes except the Pinion bike, and build a new all mountain / bikepacking MTB.
I wanted :
  • light bike
  • pretty "cheap"
  • a bit of rear travel but not as much as the Specialized Enduro
  • careless suspension
  • aggressive / modern geometry
  • enough room to mount DIY bikepacking gears, espacially a framebag

I thought that a "down country" bike would be a solution. Carbonda FM936.  :-*
Then i changed my mind for a pure all mountain FM1001.
Then I hesitated for a 160mm FS947.
Then an AM831 (SC hightower like).
Every of them have pros and cons and the cons won every time...

Then I thought a custom titanium hartdail with 180mm front fork (based on Chromag Doctahawk), would probably be amazing.
But still no rear travel...

I finally make a decision and decided to order a custom softail titanium bike.
Asked walty, xacd and titan products. Titan is the one I chose.

Geometry
Here is the geometry.
160mm fork, 80mm rear travel.
Massive 505mm reach and 77° STA 63° HTA 430 chainstay (63° seems crazy but it is almost a hardtail, HTA should be around 64,5 once sagged).
20mm stem (integrated bar)
Compatible max 29x2.5 and 27.5x3.0.

Parts
Here is the detail bike check (almost everything is already at home)
Goal : 11,5 kg maximum. Fingers crossed...

Frame pictures
The frame just left the factory for shipping.

Next steps : wait, mount and test-ride  8) ;D

Re: Softail titanium MTB 29/27.5+ (all mountain - bikepacking) Weight : it is an estimation. Expected weight, around 2 and 2.3 kg. Not weighed yet, we'll see.
The rear suspension : the titanium plate flex is the pivot. The seat stays are flattened ton flex as well.
Cable routing : rear derailleur and dropper post = internal. Rear brake = external (easier maintenance etc.)

Other bikes with this "technology" :
Funk Cycles - La Ruta (2.2 kg frame)

Leon - Semita (10,5kg) or Montem (12,5 kg)

My bike is something between a hardcore hardtail and a trail bike. I hope i will enjoy it :-)

Re: Carbonda fm936 Thoughts InsaneDawe,

Top tube length is no more a critical data in geo charts anymore.
In this frame the effective TT will be shorter then on a progressive, older geometry bike because of the much steeper seat tube angle.

The size L frame have a 490mm ST length which is ridiculously long for your height, especially if you really want to build a down country bike with a usable dropped length and enjoy the downhills.

With size M you'll get 6cm longer front center and 50mm longer wheelbase then your basic hardtail have. This mean more stability.

This is a XC bike, not a hard core trail/ enduro bike, you don't need 500mm reach. 475 will feel also really long after the cannondale.

Re: Softail titanium MTB 29/27.5+ (all mountain - bikepacking)
Beautiful, I think my next build after I finish my Ican p9 will be something custom in either steel or Ti. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the frame cost?

1 100 USD

Cool design.
How much travel are you actually seeing in the rear? The plate looks relatively thick, I'm surprised it would flex like that.

The plate is 6mm thick (vs 3mm suggested by Titan). Leon bikes (Semita and Montem), well known here in France are 8mm thick. A rear shock optimization is advised (low friction, low compresion, dynamic rebound).

The Leon Semita gives 85mm with 165x38 rear shock.
I chose 190x40mm shock compatibility => let's say around 90mm of rear travel.

This kind of softails are well known for their incredible grip while climbing.
I wanted something that seats between a real full suspension and a hardtail, with low care.

Re: Recommendations for lightweight Full suspension XC/Trail frame
Carbonda FM936 or FM909 should be exactly what you're after.
