Metal Frames / Re: Experiences with Chinese steel frames?
« on: October 12, 2024, 10:53:14 PM »
I don't have any experience with either company/frames but there's already a number of Seaboard builts being reviewed here. Just read them.

Waltly already joined the 3d printing game.
Ordered a frame about a month back and waiting for my "pre xmas" present :D

Interesting. Do post a review or even your journey of planning to execution of the deal. I would like to know the details.

I have 3 titanium bikes all done by Waltly.

Nov 2018 - Gravel Bike
Primarily built as a flatbar gravel bike and initially built as a 1x11 and eventually converted to a Single Speed. I'm still riding it as an SS.
Notable rides : Audax 400, 300 & 200

Jul 2020 - MTB 29er
Built and setup as a full-rigid mtb as that's what suited the trails I do.
Notable rides : various overnight bikepacking, light trails

Aug 2022 - Gravel Bike
Having converted my gravel bike to SS, I built this one to serve my touring, geared gravel bike and long distance rides needs. It is set it up as a 2x11 flatbar gravel bike.
Notable rides : Audax 600, 400 & 300, various light touring

All 3 bikes are still in service and in great shape. Never had any manufacturing issues. All agreed upon specifications have been met by Waltly to my satisfaction. Dates are when the bikes were built not when it was commissioned with Waltly.

Metal Frames / Re: Frame for a touring bike

I'm no expert but here are some things you get you going.

Belt drive is great but the initial budget can be pretty steep. You'll need a frame with either a break on the seatstay or an elevated chainstay. And there aren't that many off-the-shelf model to choose from with those options. But you can go Chinese custom built titanium frames. There are several discussions about that in the Metal Frames cathegory. Internal gear hubs (IGH) are recommended for belt drive and the good ones are pretty expensive.

Depending on the kind of touring you have in mind... I mean how heavy you want to carry. Frame & fork material will matter. If your stuff are heavy (you bring your shelter, bedroom, kitchen and fridge), you might want to go with steel or titanium but if it's a credit card tour (sleep in hotel and eat in restaurants) a carbon fiber frame can make your rides faster and more comfty. Depending on your choice here, you have the option of using frame bags or panniers or combination of both. So make sure you have gear boses on your frame and fork.

If you really want to go with belt drive, Rohloff IGH is the most reliable, you can check out Shimano's line too.

Most people like to have dropbars on their touring bike but if you're not one of them, you might want to check out alternative handlebars aside from straight and riser bars.

For Chinese parts, I can recommend Rockbros and Zitto, they're relatively cheap and more than decent in quality. And they got lots of bike parts and products for bikepacking and bike touring.

Very happy with my 3 units from Waltly.

If it's not too late, I would suggest a third water bottle mount under the down tube. It might come in handy, and it's not a bother if you don't use it.

Here's what I used with mine, a tool cannister...

Last time I asked, Waltly doesn't do buttings.
I have no idea about the other companies though.

Those of you who have gone through the design process with Waltly, how difficult is getting some modern geo? I would love a TI hardtail similar to the Marin San Quentin or El Roy, but I am totally new to bike design.

To be honest, I don't know what constitute modern geo. But I have 3 custom frames from Waltly. My geos are based on Jamis (gravel bike) and Niner (HT XC & gravel bike) with some modifications and added features. Communication is pretty smooth. As long as you can articulate what you want in English, there won't be any ptoblem. Waltly's people are pretty knowledgeable with the bike standards. They have often gave me options when I was unclear with what I wanted. But the one thing I would like to emphasize is their patience. I was initially going for a Trek Stache elevated chainstay. It took us close to 2 weeks trying to make it work. Unfortunately, it couldn't be done so I had to go to plan B. Even though I settled for my second choice, I wasn't completely bummed as we did try to make it work. So if the modern geo you want is doable, they will do it. If not, they will inform you.

Shimano NX01, some people calls it Olive chain. For single speed or fixed gear only.

What size seat post on your Waltly frames? This one has a 31.6 post and it's a sloppy fit. My gravel frame from Waltly has a 30.9 and it fits much better with no slop.

My gravel bike & touring bike are 27.2mm while my ht mtb was 31.6mm. Never had any issues with any of my seatposts (cf, titanium & dropper post).

Sorry if this has been asked but i was not able to find it.   what does a basic Ti frame from Waltly cost?  i know this is a loaded question as there is a lot of customizing that can be done but just a run of the mill gravel frame or road frame?  I would really like to go this route but i kind of want to have a ball park before i get going.  Thank you in advance.

My 3rd one, commissioned on 2022 was US$1300. Excluding shipping & duties. My frame costs more as I had ovalize top tube.

Sad to see that happen bxcc.
I actually have 3 Waltly bikes now and all have seen more mileage than yours and still going strong. Here's hoping Waltly would still honour their warranty.

Metal Frames / Re: Tsunami Seaboard GR02 Budget Gravel Build
« on: September 04, 2022, 09:24:10 PM »
I've seen a number of Tsunami Seaboard builds locally. Like almost dozen had cropped up on the local FB bike groups during the COVID Lockdown alone. Most were built as gravel bikes. And almost always, they went with the chrome finish. They look really good to be honest. Yours is the first black built I've seen... very sexy built. As far as durability is concerned, I haven't heard/read of anyone reporting and any failures yet... and that's at least a couple of years already.

One of my Waltly Ti is also 31.6mm seatpost with a 31.75mm bore. I have a Tito titanium seatpost on it with no problem. I also have a Waltly Ti with 27.2mm seatpost with 27.35mm bore, and the CarbonSpeed cf seatpost fits with no problem. And just recently received my 3rd Waltly Ti frame. Haven't built it yet but the KS 27.2mm dropper post fits pretty snug in the 27.35mm bore. I will update when it's built. I still have some parts & components in transit.

@Flying Trunk Monkey, I can only speak for Amy of Waltly. I've only dealt with her, twice at that. I'm very satisfied with her service, got to say she's probably the most patient person I've transact with. She also seems to have ample knowledge with bike parts. I remember after I gave her the list of geometry figures, she asked me if I want them to adjust the head tube length in case I am considering a Chris King Inset 7 headset. I believe that is related to your X spec component & Y fit component. You'll just have to be specific, and she'll ask you if she didn't understand.
