After The Ride / Re: What's new?
« on: March 16, 2020, 11:22:19 AM »
The Cybertruck will be another game changer for those who like trucks.  I have a friend who works at Tesla who also has a Tri-motor on order.

If I were to build a FS Chiner today, that Santa Cruz clone that I saw posted in another thread looks really promising.

Yes, the regular SJ 29er (not the ST) can switch between 27.5" and 29" wheels, there is a flip chip on the shock yoke to help with raising the BB when I put on the 27.5 wheels.  Pedal strikes are minimal, although better with the 29" wheels and the flip chip in the low position which is odd to me, seems like the chip should make the BB height the same.  Although maybe it's slightly low because I'm running 2.8" Maxxis tires instead of 3.0" wide tires.

I purchased a set of carbon 27.5 x 40 wheels about a year and a half ago from yishunbike.com.  Service was pretty good, pricing was very good at the time.  Wheels are holding up very well so far.

I've been riding both my Stache and my new 2019 Specialized SJ Expert.  The LBS had a blow out sale and I couldn't resist after a long test ride, so I sold my 2016 SJ and traded up.  I've still not forgotten how fun it is to have a Chiner though.  The color of the new SJ is Rocket Red and the color just blows out in most pictures.  I've currently got the bike setup with a set of Chiner 27.5 wheels and 2.8" tires for the wet winter conditions.  I'll switch back to the factory 29" wheels for the drier summer conditions.

Bigger news with me is after 20 years I've changed companies, I moved from Motorola to Levolor.  The new job requires a long commute into downtown Atlanta so I decided to purchase an EV to save on expenses.

After The Ride / What's new?
« on: March 15, 2020, 08:06:50 PM »
I've not checked in on Chintertown in a long while.  Hope everyone is doing well, and staying healthy.  The weather here outside Atlanta has been terrible for getting out and riding, so much rain over the last three months I can't even talk about it.  Been riding Zwift a lot lately, the new MTB course is fun.

yes it should be gone by now.  :)

Almost a year with no reply, how did the build go and was the frame quality as good as the rims and fork?

Seems Chinertown only has a few regulars these days.

I've used Zwift for the past 4 months, not so much in April, and overall I've enjoyed being able to ride using my trainer when the weather was cold and wet outside.

I know about the doping but don't really care, since there are thousands of people on any given map, there's still plenty of people to pass ;D.

I've stopped my subscription now that the weather is nicer, will probably not get back on Zwift again until sometime in late October or November.

Component Deals & Selection / New Bike Rack - My Review
« on: May 02, 2019, 09:20:40 PM »
I had a Saris Superclamp EX 2-Bike rack and while it was good, and served me well for about 4 or 5 years, I decided to sell it and purchase a 1-UP USA Quickrack Single + 1-Bike Add-on.  Several of my friends had purchased the 1-UP and really liked them so I decided to join the club.

Overall, this rack has got to be one of the best currently available on the market.  Here is why:
  • Since 95% of the time I am only carrying one bike, I can just use the Quickrack single without the +1 bike add-on.
  • The quality of the rack is very good, no plastic parts means nothing to crack or age over time.
  • The rack is designed such that as you add more bikes, each successive bike mounts a few inches higher than the previous, kind of like stadium seating, this allows the bars to clear each other.
  • Adding or removing the +1 Add-on is very simple, just two bolts that you loosen slightly attach the add-on and tighten the bolts, takes only a few minutes.
  • In the single bike configuration, it's lighter than my Saris rack was, and only a few pounds heavier in the 2-bike configuration.  I take my rack on and off my car each time I use it so I like that the single config is relatively light weight.
  • The 1-up rack is similar to the Saris in how it holds the bike, grabbing each tire and not touching the frame, no ratcheting straps to deal with either.
  • Out of the box it supports tires up to 3" wide, and virtually any wheel size.  It will also accommodate Fat Bikes with a simple conversion kit.
  • Cost is comparable to the Saris Superlcamp 2-bike rack but is much better quality.  The 1-up is all aluminum construction, whereas the Saris is black painted steel and plastic.
  • There is zero wobble on the 1-up, my Saris would rock back and fourth and creak at the hinge point (tilt mechanism) while driving down the road.  The 1-up is solid, it's doesn't creak, and it doesn't move at all, even with two bikes attached.
  • The 1-UP even works with Chiner bikes!

With all the great things I have to say about the rack, it's not without a few faults:
  • The ratchet design could be better, if you pull up too much on the lever, it can bind.
  • The release for the tilt mechanism could be design better, it can also bind slightly.
  • The 1-UP doesn't have a provision for built in cable locks, if you need to lock the bike, you'll need to bring your own bike lock

To go with the review, here is a pick that I need to resize:

So his or her very first post says the items ordered from xmiplay all failed, provides very little detail other than Peter will not agree to replacement of said failed components without seeing them first, and basically says don't order from this company.  It's been 10 days since that post.  I'm suspicious that this user is a competitor just trying to spread a false rumor to negatively impact Peter's business.

29er / Re: New Buyer: CS-057 vs BXT-015
« on: October 06, 2018, 04:05:45 PM »
You can't go wrong with an -057 frame, however, that design has been around for a few years, there are now frames with newer trail geometry being sold.

Most likely the -057 from Peter is around $300 or so.  You can have it custom painted, which can be nice instead of flat black.

Of what's on Peter's website now, the CS-887 looks pretty good.

Do you know what geometry specs you like?  Maybe go do some test rides first, find out what you like, then look for a frame with similar geometry.
