After The Ride / Flakey Aliexpress App!
« on: March 04, 2024, 12:42:58 PM »
I put on the Aliexpress app on my Android tablet about 5 months ago.   Starting around 5 days ago, I have been running into more and more problems trying to go through my routine of collecting coins.   The app works fine for looking at items, putting items in my cart, and purchasing items.   But the coin section and the 3 games have been having more and more problems.  (Go-Go Match, Merge Boss, and Play and win.)   In my coin section, I can collect my daily 70 coins, but when I click on the "earn more coins" icon, my app reboots.   Almost the exact same thing is happening with the 3 games.  I open a game from either the coins icon or via my account icon and when the program loads to about, 80%, the app reboots or locks up.

I have rebooted my tablet and reinstalled the Aliexpress App and this doesn't help.  I have checked to see that I have the latest software updates, I have cleaned up the tablet's memory and unused files and checked/cleaned up the memory.   None of this helps.

I am fairly sure that it is the Aliexpress app.

Because of this, I can't play the games and get the highest level of bonuses.  I keep resetting to day 1 levels.    I feel like I already waste too much time collecting coins, but the problem  is irritating me enough that I may abandon the App altogether.

Anyone else having problems like these?

Edit:  Opening games was also becoming very slow before these other problems manifested.

I want to get a dedicated thread going to review and discuss available carrying of your gear for Bikepacking, Adventure cycling and Bicycle touring.   I want to keep this thread to items that are used to carrry your gear on your long multiday rides.   - Panniers, Bike bags, Stuff sacks and saddle bags.    Aliexpress lists and sells a lot of different items in this category.   I am always looking for the lightest, most durable, perhaps water proof, and best bang for the buck.

For this years planned trips, I am trying to remove more weight and am looking for the lightest durable gear packs I can find on Aliexpress.   (Perhaps other brands outside Aliexpress, if they are affordable.)

I am hoping other forum members will have some good recommendations for bags you have purchased and used.

I purchased a set of Rhinowalk panniers over a year ago.  They have held up OK, on 3, week+ trips, but they are already showing signs of wear, and are having issues.

I purchased and use one of these NEWBOLER saddlebags for overnight trips.

I have purchased numerous sacks off of Ali express.

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Aliexpress: Page under maintenance
« on: November 07, 2023, 10:53:54 AM »
for the past several weeks, I have been continually seeing Aliexpress's "Page under maintenance"  coffee cup appear when I click on almost all of the items on their "Super Deals",  "First come 50% off", "$1.99 off" and "Choice" items.

This is starting to become very frustrating.  How is one to be a good consumer of sale items on Aliexpress, if one can't even view and read about the item?
This appears to be happening almost any hour of the day.

Anybody else seeing this happen to their shopping experience?

Edit: Yes, I am an Aliexpress addict and I need my fix researching available cycling part deals, and finding other mass produced consumer items.

Metal Frames / Cracked Waltly TI 29er frame Repair
« on: August 22, 2023, 04:30:40 PM »
I discovered that my Waltly custom 29er TI frame has some bad cracks in the seat stay to seat tube.
Sumi, at Walty, has proposed 2 approaches.

1.  Send the frame back to China for repair.
2.  Split the cost of a new frame 50/50.

I want what will be the most cost effective approach to either repair or replace the frame.

I need input from the forum to help me figure out the best approach.

-  Does anyone know of a US shop that welds and repairs TI frames?   If yes, what is the typical cost to weld/reinforce/repair the cracks?
-  Does anyone know a cost effective way to ship the frame back to China/Waltly.   -  Looking online I have found shipping estimates between about $400 and $1200
-  I believe that a 50/50 split for a new frame could cost up to $700.

Thanks.

In May, I purchased/received this lightweight tent with carbon Poles for camping while riding segments 3 and 4 of the divide trail.   I set up the tent once before packing it up for the trip.
On night 1, one of the pole interfaces snapped causing me to try an emergency repair.  2 days later 2 more of the pole joints snapped. I had to be creative getting the tent set up to be partially functional.   I ended up purchasing a Big Agnus tent while I was riding through steamboat and mailed the POS tent home.

Upon my return, I wrote this seller stating to them that their carbon tent poles are pieces of garbage!  I hope I can get some sort of replacement poles set from them.
Think twice and thrice before purchasing this item!!!

On March 25th, 2023, I placed an order for a set of the the Wheeltop EDS shifter from an Aliexpress store called "Bikinge StoreJust about a $400 transaction with coupons.    After 2 weeks, the tracking information stated that the package was being returned to the store.   I wrote the seller and asked them what was happening.   They replied that they would mail it to me again once the confirmed that they had received the package back.   2 weeks later, they told me that they had shipped it by UPS.   I asked for the tracking number.  They wrote back, "not to worry, it was shipped".  Every 2 days, I would write asking for confirmation that they had shipped the item to me.   About once a week they would reply with some sort of apology and that I should receive the box soon.  Then they wrote me that I should have received the item.  At day 40, I told them that I wanted a refund or proof that they shipped the item again.   Crickets.   I waited 5 more days then requested a refund from Aliexpress.   Needless to say, Aliexpress has approved a full refund.

Hopefully anyone that reads this will boycott this store.

My plans for upgrading a second bike to the EDS system has been ruined for spring riding.   Plus, I have to select another seller and spend an additional $30 to $40 to purchase as the current prices.  (Or perhaps wait months until there is another sale.)

I had my custom 29er hardtail frame spec'd to take a 15X110 boost 100mm travel suspension fork.   On a 2 of my bikes, I have been using the Rockshox Sid Ultimate SL 100mm travel fork, and love this model fork.

I am building up a second 29er hardtail right now and it requires 100mm travel suspension fork to keep the geometry correct.

- I purchased both of my SID Ultimate's for less than $550 and don't want to pay the $800 to $1K current asking prices, so will wait until the winter sales take place to purchase a 3rd one.

Has anyone seen a Chinese version of the SID SL Ultimate for sale on Aliexpress?

Conetop fork, that accepts boost (15X110) 29er wheel, with 100mm travel?

Component Deals & Selection / Shipping times, Post Covid.
« on: March 15, 2023, 11:31:18 AM »
I placed several orders via Aliexpress, Some on Feb. 27th then some more items on March 7th.   This time, instead of only bike parts, I ordered some cycling clothing some electrical items, and an electric gas generator carburetor.   Guess what! All of the non-bicycle items I ordered on March 7th, are already being delivered to me. (8-9 day delivery.)
Out of the 4 bike parts I ordered, on Feb 27th, only one has been delivered.  As far as I can tell, several of the bike parts may have not even been shipped yet. (I've written the sellers/stores and asked if they have delivered the item and they claim they have shipped. (All the parts are smaller items except for a carbon dropper handlebar.)

When I look at all my orders of bike parts over the past 3 months, about 60% of bike parts are delivers between 3 weeks and a month.   All the other items have been arriving between 7 and 11 days.

What are your delivery times these days for bike parts?

Component Deals & Selection / MTB Shoes from Aliexpress
« on: March 09, 2023, 03:17:22 PM »
Input wanted regarding mountain bikes shoes being sold on Aliexpress.

A couple years ago, I purchased a pair of mtb. shoes that use SPD cleats via Aliexpress.  The shoes fit fine and have done a good job to date, but the plastic sole is so hard of a plastic that I can't walk on the shoes or get traction on smooth surfaces.  Walking on snow covered ice is nearly impossible.

Therefore I am looking for input regarding a pair of mtb shoes from Aliexpress that have softer soles, (don't have to be flat)  fit SPD cleats, and can be walked on.  There are several different mtb. shoes I have in my cart, but I am looking for input from others who have purchased mtb shoes sold via Chinertown.

Component Deals & Selection / EDS electronic rear Derailleur

Somewhere in the recent past, I saw a discussion on the EDS Chinese 12 speed system.   I can't remember it it was on this forum or on MTBR forum.

Has anyone been using this system and have actual experience on their bike?
It appears that since last year, the price has gone up to $420 versus $365 when it was first reviewed on You Tube.

Component Deals & Selection / Super Boost Discussion
« on: November 21, 2022, 11:26:08 AM »
Last year, around this time of year, I had Waltly build me a custom TI 29er hardtail that was Super Boost based. (Fits 157 rear hubs.)
I purchased many of the parts for the build off of Aliexpress.   But, I was not able to purchase any cost effective lightweight 157 rear hubs.  I ended up purchasing XT super boost hubs via E-bay deals I found, and built up my own rear wheels.  (Front wheel prebuilt and ordered spokes and additional carbon rims from CLANNAD.

Since May this year, I road over 1000 miles on this particular bike, including 2 multi-day bikpacking trips.  I really like how this bike turned out, and do like the super boost geometry, including the wider BSA 83BB shell on the frame.

The reason I am sharing this is that about a year ago, I contacted every seller of hubs on Aliexpress asking if they were going to sell a super boost version of their hubs.  All of them said yes, but close to a year has passed, and few are listed and actually available.

I ended up working to some degree with a couple manufacturers of hubs via Alibaba.   I can get a great price, for an under 250 gram rear hub, but I have to purchase a minimum of 50. (Tried the "sample" route, but they haven't wanted to let me purchase several samples.)

I figure, since super boost hasn't really taken off, Chinese manufacturers aren't willing to manufacture 157mm rear hubs on their own.
Similarly, I can't find a single super boost frame for sale on Aliexpress.
