Title: Head unit mount recommendations for integrated aero bars
Post by: 1Sigma on August 18, 2022, 06:24:44 PM
I’ve been using one of cheap carbon mounts for awhile, but I gotta change it.
It doesn’t dampen vibration, or simply transfer it.  Rather it seems to amplify it.
This season I’ve broken three mounts, and lost a bike computer because of it.

Almost lost my brand new Karoo 2 today, if not for the tether.

For those running integrated aero handlebars, what are you using?
Are there any good carbon ones, or should I just get an alloy one?

I have the og evkin one and it works great so far on the road, no gravel.
Not super cheap so maybe it’s worth trying out:

Thanks. Patrick Lino also recommended this one.
How stiff do you find it?  I am using the Rider Ace one, and it basically flexes like a diving board every time I hit a bump

Just chiming in that I'm going through the same thing.  I started with the Lexon mount that looks exactly like that OG Evkin one, it vibrated so much that the plastic insert that holds the Garmin broke in a gravel race.  I ran a 3D printed mount that lasted a while but eventually broke right at the front bolt point, but it lasted a couple hundred miles and didn't vibrate at all.  I revised the design and I'm going to send it out to be printed out of a stronger material than I can print at home.  Looking for an off-the-shelf solution, I've heard the K-edge mount breaks as well.  Silca is real expensive.  Not sure what else is out there.

Wow good call on using the lanyard! (I do the same). I've been using the mount below for a year and a half now and most recently with a K2. It's held up so far but the excessive vibration resonates for sure.

Bought this AL mount a few years ago and was using it on my gravel bike, heavier but more sturdy for sure https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000115849509.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.21ef180281mGae

I've also broken these carbon lollipop mounts before...not a fan of them. Here's what I use now:
https://www.amazon.com/Integrated-Handlebar-Computer-Compatible-Attachment/dp/B09V896BN6/ref=mp_s_a_1_21?crid=2LJ4UL9YPVSX5&keywords=integrated+bar+computer+mount+alloy&pscroll=1&qid=1660923275&sprefix=integrated+bar+computer+mount+alloy%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-21&wIndexMainSlot=25

It's 100x better and just looks and feels like a much higher quality product than the carbon ones I've tried. I also prefer the way the light is mounted on this one. Highly recommend. I remember seeing a titanium mount somewhere on Amazon as well, but that one was at least double the price of this one.

I use the OG Evkin mount with their MTB integrated bar.
The mount vibrated, and when putting a light below, it was... dancing.
Discussing with OG Evkin didn't drive to any hope of improvement.

Then I crashed once and broke its end at the first screw.
I did cut the end, drilled another hole, making it more rigid being shorter.
And now it works great  8)

I did buy an alloy one too, to replace it.
But never used in the end: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mtKYyEo
Not sure why, it looks more dangerous to me if you hit someone in a group crash.

I actually have this added to my AliX wish list for the exact same reason - the set back position of the light/GoPro mount is much better.

If there is room on my mount to make it shorter, I might try that too.
In the meantime, I am going to experiment by contact cementing some inner tube to the contact points to see if it has any appreciable dampening effect.

Let’s see how this goes.

If this fails, I am buying this:

Couple of things I've noticed in my own experience.

1- Alloy/Aluminium head unit mounts for integrated aero bars are far more durable than carbon. And in my opinion are worth the few extra grams of weight for the added security. Also the higher end Chinese brands like Winspace and Yoeleo provide better quality mounts than VeloBuild and Dengfu**.

2- When attaching the head unit mount I make sure not to extend the mount too far in front of the actual handlebars, as this exponentially causes more flex in the mount.

Yea, gonna get an alloy mount with the setback gopro mount.
Even dampened, my cheap rider ace carbon mount is stupid floppy

Another vote for the OG Evkin mount! I'm running the CM-005S and have put over 4,000 km's on it in the last 5 months. It's been absolutely solid, zero flex and has never come loose. Would highly recommend it.

Ended up getting the Trust Fire mount.
Just could hack the vibration from the Rider Ace carbon mount.

So far I’m loving it.  No more springboard. The Garmin mount has a satisfying click. The action mount is located closer to the mounting bolts, reducing leverage caused by having a light or GoPro at the end of the mount.

The matching light comes with a mount lock, making it easy to remove to charge.  It’s only 430 lumens, but that’s fine for me.

I didn’t weigh it.  Is it heavier? Sure, but worth it.
