Title: TanTan GR047 or GR048?
Post by: 3361 on September 04, 2023, 01:32:20 PM
Hello everyone :)

I'm looking for a gravel frame for my commuter bike on gravel roads and possibly for longer bike trips in the future. Currently, I can't decide between the Tantan GR047 (S), Seraph GR047, Spcycle G056, and Velobuild GF-03, as well as the Tantan GR048 (Airwolf R056) in XS or S sizes.

I'm 160 cm tall with an inseam length of 75 cm (640 mm from bottom bracket to saddle).

I currently own a Trek Madone 3.1 from 2012 in frame size 50 (bottom bracket to top tube 440 mm, rides great), and a budget gravel bike from XXL Sports - White GX (bottom bracket to top tube 450 mm, Reach 400 mm, Stack 520 mm), which feels a bit too large for me. Therefore, I want to transfer the wheels (WTB) and GRX groupset to a new frame.

Pros for the GR047:
- Proven design (Wilier Jena)
- Offset seat stay (I generally like this)
- Seat tube height of 430 mm

Cons for the GR047:
- Knock-off design
- Longer reach
- Not a timeless design

Pros for the GR048:
- $40 cheaper than the GR047
- Shorter reach
- Classic design
- Mounting points on the top tube are better positioned than on the GR047

Cons for the GR048:
- No reports of a successful build yet
- Frame design is somewhat unexciting, similar to XC frames
- XS with a 420 mm top tube length is a bit low, and 450 mm is the same as my current gravel bike

I've spent hours playing with Bikestats, but I just can't make up my mind. Does anyone have any tips on which frame I should choose?

Thanke you all :)

Hi.
Did you make a decision?
I'm kinda in the same boat, choosing between GR048, GR047 and Carbonda CFR707. Leaning more towards GR048 as it has lower mounts for bottle cages on seat tube, so there will be some room left for frame bag  :D
Also, the tire clearance in smaller in GR047 - 47mm compared to 50mm in 707 and GR048. I agree with you, that 048 has boring (I would say "classic") design, but I prefer usability/versatility over design features and look, so bigger tire clearance, better bottle mounts is a big plus for me.

I also am choosing between the two bikes. I love the look of gr048 but the heatube and stack is just to big on this bike. Like come on only 385 reach in size XL paired with Huge 630 stack. Thats huge stack. And if one wants lower stack then size L had on only 556 TT. Thats to short for 187cm guy. When I look qt gr047 geo it just suits me better. Reach 391 ant 608 stack looks nice. Can run slammed stem with 100/110 stem.

Well, everyone's body is different. Bug legged short torso here. I am myself tempted by this frame because of that. My current frame it size 54 has 371 mm reach for just 569 mm stack and I find it too low. I would rather have something in the range of 600 or so, so that I don't need to use too many spacers.
