Title: OG-EVKIN BT-001 Handlebar Tape Kit - What are these?
Post by: rtuk on November 27, 2024, 04:42:33 PM
This kit https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005042933910.html? (https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005042933910.html?) was delivered today along with my Uno stem - new bars are not here yet.

Although not shown in the vendors pics, I can see other buyers have received the same extra rubber pieces x2 that I have. You can see them in this pic (not mine - grabbed from AE) - one is next to the plug and the other has the plug inside it. What are they for?

It's an alternative to the finishing tape to make for a no-tape look on the tops. I don't use them.

I think he means the rubbery round things. I assume they are to go over the bar ends for some reason.

Thanks for confirming. I've never seen them used before - just different versions / thicknesses of tape.

As there's finishing tape supplied too - I have options...

In fact I need to find a good YouTube video on taping bars - does anyone have any reccs?

Park tools channel has an excellent guide.

I'm confused. How do those round rubber things work?

My impression at least - and I could be wrong - is that the intention is to slide them onto the bars and up to the tops in the initial build (before putting shifters on) so you can hide the cut piece at the top end of the tape (rather than using electrical tape).

I could be entirely wrong though!

I think this is correct - the inside of the rubber is profiled to 2 levels / diameters - so that the thicker piece sits on the bar and the thinner piece sits on the tape.

Thank you

I found you can buy them separately - https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005808070214.html (https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005808070214.html) That shows a fair number of purchases and reviews. Might actually try them & see how they go

I had bought a set of the rings from Risk. They seemed like an interesting alternative/cover for tape. I laid them out on the workbench when starting assembly of everything on the handlebars. Then I saw them on the bench right as I finished wrapping the second side.

I used them on my last build-much cleaner than electrical tape.

Could probably also use heat shrink tubing as well.
