Title: Emonda ALR Direct Mount stories true? 700x30C or 700x32C fits?
Post by: David Belgium on March 27, 2025, 05:09:50 AM
Greetings from Europe,

Anyone own and/or riding a recent (2019-2024) Trek Emonda ALR with 'Direct Mount' rim-brakes (not asking about any 'disc' brake Emonda models).

I've heard on these Emonda ALR Direct Mount frames Trek is still loaded with, that people are fitting 700x30C or 32C tires (both tubeless and tubed) on there and having no clearance problems.

Anyone doing this?

If so, which Direct Mount brake model are you using?

Also, what is the rim set on your bike (the manufacturer, and the stated internal and external width)?

Thanks so much for any help with this.  If this new Emonda ALR DM frame can do a 700x30C on a 19-21mm internal rim, I'm thinking a nice carbon wheelset from Light-Bicycle/Wheelfars/Winspace/etc would be quite something on it & the bike could easily compete with any disc brake frame over rolling road terrain and hill climbing.

I can’t talk about the frame clearance on this one. But I can talk about direct mount rim brakes. I got the VB-R218/Chinarello Dogma F frame. I’ve been running this with Bontrager Speed Stop brakes which closely resemble the Cane Creek EEbrakes. I’m now running Campagnolo Record brakes. I got 21internal/30external rims with 25c Vittoria Corsas that blow up to actual 29mm in width. There’s definitely enough clearance for 30mm and probably even 32mm. The limiting factor on my frame is the drive side chainstay. Not the brake calipers.
I’ve had the Ultegra calipers in the single bolt variant on another frame but those are basically identical with the direct mount calipers in design and shape. Those would easily clear 30mm tires as well.

I’m talking actual measured width as that varies wildly between tires of the same (labelled) size. Also, clearance above the tire might differ depending on where the brake mounts are exactly on the frame.

Keep us posted. Being able to put a 30C measuring 31-32mm on a wide rim would be amazing. Discs brake better, but if you dont ride in the wet and don't ride the bike so much that you'd kill the brake tracks, it'd be a bike very easy to live with.
Is there a carbon version that they'd discount a ton?

I have a 2019 ALR with the Bontrager Speed Stop brakes, and consistently run 28mm tires. Here's a pic of the bike with Vittoria Rubino Pro's on 17c inner rims. I've also run them with 28c GP4000sII, which I'm sure ballooned up beyond 30mm and still had clearance.
